How the Niners offense can improve on third down and in red zone

This is a blog about Stanford tight end Coby Fleener, but first, some context.

According to Matt Maiocco, Dashon Goldson is the Niners’ top candidate for the franchise tag. Franchising Goldson would cost the Niners $6.2 million in 2012, while it would cost them $10.6 million to franchise their other top free agent, Carlos Rogers.

So, Goldson most likely will be a Niner next season. But, will Rogers?

He wants a four year contract, but he said he’d take less money to sign with San Francisco. How much money would the Niners be comfortable giving to the 30 year old?

Maiocco says “the team believes (Chris Culliver) will be ready to start next year as a second-year player.” If that’s true, it doesn’t seem like the Niners feel desperate to re-sign their Pro Bowl corner.

If they let him walk, how will that affect their offseason?

First, they’ll probably have cap space to seriously bid for a big-bodied, free agent wide receiver – their biggest need by far. If they want the Saints’ Marques Colston, who is 28 years old and 6’5”, the Niners could potentially outbid and weaken their rival.

They’d also have to get another cornerback, probably in the draft but not necessarily in the first round. Teams usually expect and count on first rounders becoming starters in their first season. But, if Maiocco is correct that the Niners see Culliver and Tarell Brown as starter-caliber corners for next season, then Trent Baalke can draft a corner to develop in the second round, like Josh Norman from Coastal Carolina.

Here’s where Coby Fleener comes in. No matter what happens with Carlos Rogers, the Niners should draft Fleener in the first round.

But the Niners already have Vernon Davis and Delanie walker, you say. They don’t need another tight end.

What the Niners need is to improve their offense, especially on third downs and in the red zone.

Fleener would do that.

He’s 6’6”, he’s fast, and he can play tight end or wide receiver. He’s bigger and faster than any wide receiver who likely would be available at the 30th pick of the first round.

Plus, he’s a much better receiver than Walker, the Niners current No. 2 tight end, who is short for the position, plus he drops passes.

Fleener is not as good of a blocker as Walker or Davis. But the Niners don’t need more blocking. They need more getting open and more catching. Fleener is known for both those things.

According to the Associated Press’ Antonio Gonzalez, who covered Stanford Football this season, the Cardinal players called Fleener “deceivingly fast,” and “the second fastest player on the team.”

Gonzalez says Fleener ran past linebackers easily – he even blew by safeties. So, by the end of his college career opposing defenses covered him with cornerbacks.

Fleener stretches the field just like Vernon Davis. If the Niners have both guys, neither one could be double teamed.

Imagine this shotgun formation on third down and long: Fleener and Davis at tight end, Colston at split end, Joshua Morgan at flanker and Michael Crabtree in the slot. Alex Smith could easily find good one-on-one matchups with that personnel.

If the Niners draft Fleener, they’ll have the best tight end corps in the NFL – better than the Patriots’ group with Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.

If the Niners also sign Colston, they’ll be a good third down and red zone offense. They’d have too much talent not to be.

“Good” is a big improvement from “dreadful,” which is what the Niners offense was on third downs and in the red zone this past season. If the Niners can go from “dreadful” to “good” in those areas, they’ll have no holes on their team.

And if all it takes to make that possible is Rogers signing somewhere else, it will be worth it for the Niners, don’t you think?

49ers must alter winning formula for 2012

All season long the 49ers relied on a simple formula: takeaways + excellent defense + cautious offense = wins. The equation proved sound throughout 2011 and got them within a step of the Super Bowl.

But in the NFC Championship …

49ers to target receivers as area for improvement

It appears the 49ers might have missed a spot in their extreme makeover this season. And that area was impossible to miss for those paying attention during the postseason. In two games, the 49ers wide receivers managed eight catches for 51 yards and one touchdown. In their 20-17 overtime loss...

Cosell clarifies

Greg Cosell expanded on his NFC championship commentary Thursday morning on KNBR’s The Murph and Mac Show. Here’s what he said.

Q: For everyone who didn’t read your blog, tell us your evaluation of the game.

COSELL: “Let me just start with this: It was 49ers football. They played true to their character. It’s a run-based offense. It’s a high percentage of two backs, two tight ends, two backs and two tight ends. Occasional shot plays, pass plays off play action, off boot action. That’s what they do. The touchdown to Davis, the first one – really beautifully designed, great throw by Alex Smith. The second touchdown to Davis – beautifully designed, another great throw. And we know that if Kyle Williams doesn’t fumble, maybe they win the game. He fumbled twice. That’s 49er football – they did not turn the ball over this year. They were +28 in turnover differential. But the problem is what happens when that doesn’t happen? And history suggests that type of thing never happens two years in a row, by the way, that kind of turnover differential.

“But there are other plays in the game – designed, big-play opportunities that were there, and Alex, for whatever reason – and he knows it, by the way – he didn’t pull the trigger. I don’t know whether he didn’t see it well. I can’t answer that.

“The first play of the second half was about as vivid as you could get. You know that’s a designed play because they came out of halftime with it. It was one of their staple plays – what we call a wheel route. They had Delanie Walker on a wheel route from the line of scrimmage tight end position. He ran right by Corey Webster who slipped. He was wide open. There was no pressure on Alex. Only he can tell you why he didn’t throw it. It would have been a 68 yard touchdown, and he ended up getting sacked.

“There are other examples as well. Michael Crabtree is taking a ton of abuse, and he’s certainly not been worthy of the tenth pick in the draft – we all know that. But, on the first play of a drive with four minutes to go and a tie game, Crabtree is wide open on a corner route from the slot, no pressure on Alex Smith – he left the pocket and then threw it out of bounds. These are plays that you have to make in these games.

“Now, am I going to say he’s the reason they lost? No, I think that would be a little strong. But, I think in tight games like that when everything doesn’t go right that’s gone right for your team all year, that’s when your quarterback has to make throws, and there were a few he missed. Obviously, if Kyle Williams didn’t do what he did they might still have won the game.

“When your turnover differential doesn’t work in a given game – and by the way, you can’t count on that. It worked out phenomenally this year, but I’ve done studies, a lot of people have done studies, a lot smarter people than me have done studies – that kind of thing doesn’t happen year after year after year. So, the +28 will not likely happen next year, and when that doesn’t happen – when other things that you expect don’t happen, the magnitude’s of the quarterback’s play increases. That’s just the way the NFL is.”

Q: But what if you look at Alex Smith’s performance this way – that he did throw two touchdowns, that he didn’t turn the ball over. He did what he did all year, and that’s been enough.

COSELL: “That’s the argument. You could argue he did exactly what he’s done all year and if it wasn’t for the turnovers they very likely could have won the game. But, they had turnovers. So, therefore, when that happens your margin for error lessens and your quarterback has to make throws.”

Q: Did Alex Smith outplay Eli Manning in that game?

COSELL: “I don’t think so, personally. Eli threw 58 balls and he had the living crap beat out of him, so you have to give him credit just in that area, that he kept getting up. I believe he was hit 23 times.

“He should have thrown two picks, maybe three. But the one thing I like about Eli – he has amnesia. He just plays one play to the next. He could throw a horrible ball and then the next play he plays like that didn’t happen. I think that’s one of his strengths.

“Eli is a more talented passer. He can make some throws that Alex Smith can’t make because he’s got a stronger arm and he’s more willing to make those throws. Quarterbacks who are willing to make stick throws, which by the way you have to be willing to do in this league, will always at times appear that they force a couple and they might throw a few more picks. But, in this league, in critical moments you’ve got to be willing to make stick throws into small windows.”

Who to re-sign: Carlos Rogers or Dashon Goldson?

Here’s the article I wrote for the Tuesday’s Santa Rosa Press Democrat. It’s about the Niners free agency situation. They believe they’re a Super Bowl team, so what they want to do is keep what they have and resign their core players. Pro Bowlers Carlos Rogers and Dashon Goldson are two of their most key guys, and they’re going to want a lot of money. The Niners may be able to sign just one of them. I wrote my article on that dilemma. To read it, click here.

Moving on: Why future looks bright for the 49ers

kyle2.jpg

Twitter follower Tony Barber, aka @shinehart, tweeted me earlier today with plea likely echoed by many 49ers fans: “Matt, it’s 16 hrs later & I’m still heartbroken. Can you say something to make me feel better?”

Well, here’s something that …

Carlos Rogers on free agency: “It’s about trying to keep this team together.”

SANTA CLARA – The Niners free agent cornerback Carlos Rogers spoke at his locker this afternoon and here’s what he said.

Last night in my grades I said I didn’t think the Niners would resign him. After listening to Rogers speak today, I’ve changed my mind. I think he’ll be back.

Q: Why was Victor Cruz so effective in the first half?

ROGERS: “That man runs around so much. He runs a lot of option routes. If you’ve got inside leverage he runs outside (and vice versa), and pick moves with the tight end. In the second half I was like, ‘If I play outside, I’m going to run inside when you chop your feet or break down.’ In the second half he just had one catch. I just said, ‘If we lose this game it’s not going to be because I gave up six or seven catches in the first half.’ I was just going to put it on me to shut him down since I was in there by myself most of the time, and I think we did a pretty good job of that in the second half of containing him and containing their whole offense. We gave our self a chance to win.

Q: You can’t just react – you’ve got to anticipate when you’re covering the slot?

ROGERS: “Yeah, that’s why a lot of people don’t want to play it”.

Q: How tough is it when it ends so abruptly?

ROGERS: “It’s tough. Everybody always looks at the play that Kyle made because that’s their last memory of the game. There was so much stuff throughout that game we could have done better. Me personally, even though they didn’t result in touchdowns, but the first and second down catches that I gave up – I always look at myself and what I could have done.

Q: Does it give you motivation moving ahead that you guys got this close?

ROGERS: “You never know when you’re going to get this close again, that’s why I tell the guys to cherish every moment and give your all when you can.

“Some of these guys are asking me what I’m going to do, if I’ll be back, things like that. That’s my biggest thing – it’s about trying to keep this team together. Because I think we’ve really got something special here. There are always bits and pieces you have to fill. The coaches and general manager will decide that, but keep this team as close as we can. I think we’ve really got something special from the top down.”

Q: Is it your preference to be back here?

ROGERS: “My preference is to be back. Like I said, for four or five (years) I want to be back. Like I said, I’m going to leave that to my agent’s hands. He just got through talking to some of the guys upstairs about that. Now it’s about putting the team first in my decision, and also you want to be compensated for where you think you’re at or where the market puts you at. But also think about this team and not about self. That’s what I’m going to go into the offseason thinking about.”

Q: Did you get an optimistic vibe from them that you guys might be able to work something out?

ROGERS: “That’s what they said. They want to get it done, want to go on and get started on it as soon as possible. Hopefully I don’t even reach free agency. They said they want me back. They definitely want me back, but at the same time will they be able to match the highest bid if I hit free agency and still keep this team together? Probably not, so they just said, ‘Keep your mind on the team first.’ They’re going to try their best to get the job done.”

Q: Would you take a hometown discount to stay?

ROGERS: “Hometown discount? I would take a team discount. Hometown discount – I think that’s real low (laughs). But just consider the team first. I definitely will. Like I told them, I like this from the owner to the general manager to everybody that’s in this organization. I like everything about this organization – all the players, the trainers. This ain’t about me coming out and saying, ‘Now I’m free, let’s get the check.’ I’m thinking about this team, and this is where I want to be.”

Akers on Kyle Williams: ‘I’m irritated with the way people are treating him’

Crabtree: “You have to get your chances. I can’t say anything else.”

SAN FRANCISCO – Here’s a transcript of what Michael Crabtree said in the locker room after the loss to the Giants Sunday night, courtesy of the 49ers.

Did the weather affect the game a lot today?

“No, it couldn’t be the weather. The other side of the ball was catching the ball.”

Did you feel like you were open?

“Half the time you aren’t going to be open. That’s why they call you a playmaker. You have to get your chances. I can’t say anything else.”

How did the defense play you?

“They played me the same really. That’s it, just opportunities.”

Were they rolling a safety to your side?

“Yeah, half the time. When they’re not rolling the safety we have to hit it.”

You’re obviously good friends with WR Kyle Williams. How do you feel about that?

“It’s football. You can’t just go crazy over that play. I know you love the game, but at the same time it’s football. Game over, there’s nothing you can do about it. It’s just how it is.”

Did you say anything to him?

“I told him just don’t do anything stupid. It’s a football game. I know it hurts, but it’s going to hurt.”

People were calling this the team of destiny. How shocking is it for it to suddenly be over?

“Defense played great. Great defense and you can’t say enough about them, they were great. Sometimes you just have to move the ball. You’ve got to make plays and give people chances to make plays.”

49ers say uncalled 4th-quarter fumble was crucial

How the Niners offense will attack the Giants defense

Here’s how I expect the Niners offense to attack the red hot New York Giants defense.

I expect the Niners to split out Vernon Davis at wide receiver often, much more than usual. The Giants are going to double team him, probably with a cornerback and a safety.

I expect the Niners to use that against them. They’ll split Davis out wide and have him run deep. Two Giants defenders will follow him wherever he goes, so if he can’t get open at least he can open up space for other 49ers to make plays.

I expect Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter to make most of those plays.

I expect both running backs to catch passes and gain big chunks of yards on plays that start with Smith faking a handoff. Smith will play fake and Davis will run a fade or a deep post to clear out a section of the field. Smith will look to hit Davis for a big gain, but if he’s covered Smith will check down to his running back who should have open space in front of him.

I also expect the Niners to use play action roll outs. I’m talking Vernon Davis split out wide to the right, play fake to Gore off right tackle, run Davis deep down the right sideline and roll Smith back around to the left where he’ll hit a wide open Bruce Miller or Joe Staley or Isaac Sopoaga.

That’s what I expect. How about you?
