Goldson explains why he signed when he signed
SANTA CLARA – Dashon Goldson, who signed his one-year franchise tender this morning, explained to reporters this afternoon why he chose to sign it today. Here’s what he said.
Q: How does it feel to be back?
GOLDSON: It feels great. The offseason was real good. I’m very confident in everything that went on. I’m glad to be back here to get this show on the road.
Q: What are feelings on playing on a one-year deal?
GOLDSON: It’s just one of these things, man. It comes with the territory. Of course, I wanted something long-term, but it ain’t all bad. I think I can go out here, and play on this and come back to the table again next year.
Q: You could have reported at any time. Why the first day?
GOLDSON: It was a no-brainer, man. I owed it to my teammates. Those guys have been working extremely hard. I missed a little part of the offseason earlier and I didn’t want to miss another part of this training camp. I wanted to come back out here and sharpen up, pick up from where we started off last year. I didn’t want to get off to a slow start during the season.
Q:Was there also a sense that this could be a pretty special season and you wanted to make sure you were here to get it off on the right foot?
GOLDSON: Definitely. We did some good things last year. It was very important for us to start fast and finish faster. We’ve got a lot of new addition and just to get acquainted with those guys. There’s a lot of stuff that needs to be sharpened up on the defensive side of the ball.
Q: How close were you to getting a long-term deal worked out? Were you surprised you couldn’t?
GOLDSON: I was a little surprised. It panned out that way. I saw it leaning toward that way and I just accepted it for what it was. There’s no hard feelings. Like I said, it’s just one of those things. It ain’t bad money. The most important thing is just being out here and getting the season started.
Q:Was a formal contract offer ever made to you?
GOLDSON:Um … not really.
Q: Did you have any health issues in the offseason?
GOLDSON: None whatsoever. I approached my offseason the same way I do every year. Just work hard. I’ve been able to train with a couple trainers this year, I was in Miami with (trainer) Pete (Bommarito). I was with Travelle Gaines with Performance Gaines and Ryan Carpretta out at Proactive. Those guys did a good job. Thanks to those guys I came to camp in shape, passed the (conditioning) test with flying colors. I’m excited to get practice going.
Q: Why go to so many different trainers instead of sticking with just one?
GOLDSON: This is my sixth year and I always want to add to my game and just try new things. I never just stick with one. A lot of guys out there have things to offer. I like the challenge in the offseason to make my training camps and my season that much easier.
Q: Did you watch film of yourself in the offseason?
GOLDSON: I did a little bit. I left a little bit out there. That’s another thing, just coming back here into camp and picking up where I left off as an individual. But at the same time, as a team.
Q: How do you keep the frustration from the business-side of this from carrying over on the field?
GOLDSON: I wouldn’t say frustrated. You really can’t say that. I was a little disappointed. It’s just one of those things. I was in a situation last year and I just had to take it upon myself and realize what’s the task at hand. We’ve got a good football team here, we’ve got a chance to do something special and that’s my main focus. What didn’t get done didn’t get done. I’m sure it will get done sometime next year.
Q: Was it disappointing when you saw other (franchise-tagged) safeties like (Tyvon) Branch and (Michael) Griffin get deals done?
GOLDSON: It’s just what I’ve done here. I wasn’t looking at those guys … What I did here is what I did here.

Josh Johnson explains why he likes Harbaugh’s coaching style
SANTA CLARA – The Niners newest quarterback, Josh Johnson, spoke today about his comfort level in the offense, his history with Colin Kaepernick, and why he likes Jim Harbaugh’s coaching style so much. Here’s a transcript.
Q: How has it been going for you getting into the playbook?
JOSH JOHNSON: It’s been going great. I’ve been fortunate for the last few years to play for a variety of different offensive coordinators, playing for Jon Gruden, Coach Harbaugh, so I’ve been able to learn the whole concepts of the game, and now with Greg Roman’s offense I’m getting a feel for how he does things. Just having this warm-up period, or as us quarterbacks like to call it – the oil-up period – It’s been great for me because now I’m a lot more comfortable in the offense, playing a lot faster, getting through things a lot quicker, getting to know my teammates a lot better now.
Q: Do you have any early memories of your time working out with Colin Kaepernick in high school?
JOSH JOHNSON: Yeah, he was a lot bigger than me then. He’s still a lot bigger than me. We’ve been working out together for a long time now. A lot of our mechanics we learned from the same guy. It’s good to have him as a teammate. He’s a great guy.
Q: What’s your impression of this offense?
JOSH JOHNSON: We always want to be in a position to have a good play. I’ve been around coaches who believe “We’re going to do what we do and they have to stop us.” Coach (Harbaugh) always wants to put you in position to have the most successful play because it’s hard to get points and to get yards in this league.
Q: You knew Harbaugh when he was starting out as a head coach at the University of San Diego. Has he changed his approach to coaching since then?
JOSH JOHNSON: No. He’s always pushing you, breaking you out of your comfort zone and challenging you. That’s who he’s always been. In college he used to always tell me, “I make it hard for you in practice so the game is a lot easier,” and he still does that. He pushes you hard in practice. He wants to make it hard on you, and then when you get in the game you can go out there and relax and be more confident.

Scott Tolzien on opportunities and maximizing each day
SANTA CLARA – Backup quarterback Scott Tolzien has one of the widest perspectives of any player on the 49ers. He’s terrific at putting things in perspective for you and me. This afternoon he broke down the collective mindset of the team and his individual mindset as an aspiring quarterback heading into training camp. Here’s a transcript.
Q: How does your second training camp feel different than your first?
TOLZIEN: Last year was a lockout year, and for all of us rookies last year was scramble mode, trying to piece the whole thing together at the last minute. This year having a summer full of OTAs, you get into a comfort zone with your teammates, the coaches and the playbook
Q: Will that be a significant thing for this team, to have the full calendar year to work?
TOLZIEN: Absolutely, but at the same time the 31 other teams are thinking the same thing. It’s added time, but I think it’s all comparative: How are you working compared to other teams in the league? They have the same opportunity as us and it’s more about who’s going to maximize each day.
Q: What are you hearing about your opportunity?
TOLZIEN: I think for me, nothing changes. You’re always competing against yourself to get better every day, otherwise you’re cheating yourself and you’re cheating your team.
A.J. Jenkins says he’s comfortable catching punts, and more
SANTA CLARA – First-round pick A.J. Jenkins spoke today about his mastery of the Niners playbook, learning to field punts and how he’s handled criticism this offseason. Here’s a transcript.
Q: How do you feel entering your first camp?
JENKINS: I feel real good right now. I feel confident. I’ve been studying the playbook like crazy. I feel real good as far as the play calling goes.
Q: When are you going to run those hills with Jerry Rice?
JENKINS: Obviously, not right now because of the fact that we have camp. Hopefully one day I can get in contact with him and we can do it.
Q: How did you handle the offseason scrutiny you were under?
JENKINS: I don’t pay attention to that stuff. I don’t go on the internet and I don’t google my name. I don’t do any of that stuff. There’s no point because it’s all about the 49ers.
Q: How do you feel about the strides you’ve made from the first day of minicamp when Harbaugh said you were out of shape?
JENKINS: I’ve made long strides. Obviously, I had criticism when I first came in as far as being in shape. Right now, that’s irrelevant. I’m trying to just help this team win. If that’s playing special teams or offense, I’ll be a real good teammate.
Q: What have you learned from Randy Moss and Mario Manningham – the guys who have been around?
JENKINS: I’ve learned a lot. I’ve talked to them over the offseason to see what they do and how they get their bodies ready for camp. I’ve taken a lot of advice from all of the guys – Michael Crabtree and Ted Ginn. I’m like a sponge taking in everything that I’m told.
Q: Have you been working a lot on catching punts and kickoffs?
JENKINS: Yeah, I have. We’ll see what happens.
Q: You never did punts in college, did you?
JENKINS: No, I never did.
Q: What’s it like when you’re trying to catch a punt from Andy Lee?
JENKINS: It’s a lot more comfortable when you have Ted Ginn back there to coach you up and to have one of the best punters ever kicking to you every day.
Q: Do you feel comfortable doing it?
JENKINS: Yeah I do.

Five players the Niners can least afford to lose
In the wake of Aldon Smith’s stabbing – and the frightening possibility they might have lost him, it appears they didn’t – let’s rank the players the 49ers can least afford to lose for next season’s Super Bowl run.
This list is highly subjective. I’m open to your ideas. It’s hard to quantify value.
- Aldon Smith –I recently ranked him as the Niners’ third-best player behind Justin Smith and Patrick Willis, but now I’m ranking him as the 2012 preseason team MVP, or the player the Niners can least afford to lose. Why? Because he has the most violent impact on the other team’s quarterback. Last season the 22-year-old played 506 snaps – about half of the Niners’ total defensive snaps – and still ranked second out of all outside linebackers in the NFL in sacks (14), fifth in QB hits (13), and seventh in QB hurries (36). Next season he’s going to start and rush the quarterback almost every defensive snap. He’s going to rush from the right and the left side, and he’s going to rush from three different positions – outside linebacker, defensive end and defensive tackle. Expect to see quarterbacks routinely pointing at Aldon Smith before plays just to let everyone else on offense know where he is. He has the potential to get 20 sacks next season. If he does, the Niners have the potential to be one of the greatest defenses of all time. Without him, the Niners pass rush becomes ordinary or worse because there isn’t an experienced pass rusher backing up Aldon Smith on the roster.
- Justin Smith – Arguably the best defensive player in the NFL last season, the 32-year defensive tackle definitely helped Aldon Smith break the Niners’ rookie sack record by drawing so many double teams. Justin Smith was also one of the best players against the run in the NFL last season. He can do it all, but it’s hard to imagine him getting any better next season –he turns 33 on September 30. If he misses time, the Niners still have another Pro-Bowl-caliber defensive tackle – Ray McDonald – and three backups they like very much – Ricky Jean Francios, Will Tukuafu and Demcarcus Dobbs.
- Alex Smith – If they lose this guy, the Niners have a big problem because no other quarterback on the roster is proven in the NFL. He wasn’t a Pro Bowler last season, but he showed some flashes of excellence, particularly against the Saints in the playoffs. If he can play that well for most of the season, he could win the Super Bowl and jump to No. 1 on this list.
- Vernon Davis – Currently the best player on the offense, he had somewhat of a down season statistically by his standards in 2011 – 792 yards and 6 TDs – but he exploded in his two playoff games – 292 yards and 4 TDs. If he can keep that type of production up next season, the Niners offense should be quite good. If they lose him, they still have other weapons on offense, just no one as good as Davis.
- Patrick Willis – The best middle linebacker in football, maybe ever. Arguably the best player on the Niners right now. He can stop inside runs and outside runs, he can blitz and he can cover tight ends. He may be the best linebacker at pass coverage in the league. He has a good chance to lead the team in tackles and interceptions next season. As great as he is, the Niners could survive without him, because their other starting inside linebacker – NaVorro Bowman, is almost as good as Willis, and the backup – Larry Grant – is good enough to start on most teams. Willis missed four games last season and the Niners went 3-1 without him.
Brees on Smith: He’s come up the hard way, and he’s handled it very well
Yes, I’m aware that Drew Brees doesn’t play for the San Francisco 49ers. But I thought the following Q&A was well worth posting on this 49ers blog, not only…
Aldon Smith stabbed
Matt Maiocco of CSNBayarea.com and Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee are tweeting that Aldon Smith was stabbed at a party Saturday morning. Barrows tweeted two people were shot and one was stabbed, and Smith’s injury is not believed to be serious. I will give you more details as they are forthcoming.
Here’s a statement from Trent Baalke: “The San Francisco 49ers are aware that Aldon Smith incurred minor injuries during an incident last night. We are in contact with Aldon, and thankful that his injuries were not more serious and that he is recovering comfortably. The 49ers are also in communication with local authorities as they gather information regarding the incident, and will reserve further comment at this time.”
