Roman: “I worked for George Seifert in Carolina and he had a tremendous impact on me.”

SANTA CLARA – Greg Roman spoke in the 49ers media tent Thursday afternoon. Here’s what he said about his coaching background and philosophy.

Rams LB James Laurinaitis was talking about some of your run concepts, formations, it’s unique. You just don’t see it with any other team. He specifically talked about the split back. What are some of your influences? Did you watch the Bill Walsh installation tapes? Did that influence you?

“The person that really taught me all that was George Seifert. I worked for George in Carolina and he had a tremendous impact on me as a football coach. I was privy to all that stuff back then, and got to watch all the films and what not and learned about it. But as far as our schemes go, scheme doesn’t matter, it’s players. The players executing the plays matters. And that’s the bottom line. We talked about first day of training camp with our offense, fundamentals, conditioning precedes everything. Fundamentals precede scheme. Ultimately execution is all that matters, no matter what you call. So, anything that succeeds is a credit simply to the players. I think we always keep an eye, an ear and a nose to our players and what we feel that they can do well and try to emphasize that.”

Why is the split back formation never used any more?

“You know, you’d have to ask them. You’d have to ask them. I don’t know. I don’t want to get into a big thing here, but that used to be the norm a long time ago and then it kind of evolved in the 80’s to I-Backs. You try to marry everything you do together so, I think everybody’s more of an I-Back field. But I will say this, I think certain types of backs can run that stuff and certain types of backs you really wouldn’t want to run that stuff with. And we have backs that are multi-dimensional that can run that stuff. So, it’s good.”

How much of an advantage is it that you guys do stuff that’s unique and other teams aren’t seeing it on a weekly basis?

“It can be an advantage. It can be. But it’s overrated. It really is. It’s all about the players on the field executing, no matter what you do. But at the same time, it’s always nice to expand and evolve as you go. So, that’s something you definitely want to do. Every team’s different. You’ve got to measure what’s right for you.”

Laurinaitis was saying that he has to be on the lookout for unusual plays, trick plays, things like that. I know you don’t like trick plays.

“Never heard of them.”

Is that an advantage to you guys that sort of takes away from the defense’s aggression because they’re always on the lookout for something that might be unusual?

“I don’t know. You probably have to ask him. But we do what we do. We’ve just got to go out and execute what we do at a high level and that’s the bottom line as we move into November.”

Why is Roman so motivated to feature Crabtree?

What do you think Greg Roman’s motivation is for featuring Michael Crabtree over Vernon Davis and Mario Manningham in the 49ers pass game?

Is it:

  1. Roman believes Crabtree is the best receiver on the team and one of the best receivers in the NFL.
  2. People in the organization are invested in Crabtree’s success. They drafted him in the first round in 2009. The people who drafted Vernon Davis in 2006 are no longer in the organization, but the people who drafted Crabtree are. If Crabtree can finally live up to the expectations of being a top draft pick, a lot of members of the 49ers front office will look smart and their stock will go up.
  3. Crabtree really is the best receiver on the team and one of the best receivers in the NFL.

I think it’s a combination of 1 and 2. What do you think?

Cosell says Roman is calling fewer designed plays for Vernon Davis this season

NFL Films analyst Greg Cosell spoke on the Murph and Mac Show Thursday morning. Here’s Cosell’s take on the Vernon Davis issue.

Q: Vernon Davis’ catches have decreased a little bit this year. What are you seeing on film? Are defenses taking him away or is Alex Smith just not looking for him?

COSELL: It’s always hard to say whether a quarterback’s looking for someone because I don’t know what’s in a quarterback’s head when he drops back. I would say that they may not be designing – and maybe Greg Roman would disagree, it’s always for me to say because I just don’t know what they tell a quarterback when they design route combinations – but it just appears on film as if they’re not going to him. I remember last year seeing plays specifically designed where they split him out, things like that. I’m not seeing that as much up to this point.

Rogers not concerned about 49ers defense forcing fewer turnovers this season

SANTA CLARA – Carlos Rogers spoke in the media tent Wednesday afternoon. Here’s what he said about the 49ers defense.

Q: You guys are ranked No.2 against the pass right now. How have the defensive backs stepped up this season?

ROGERS: It’s our second year in the system. Guys are stepping up and taking on the challenges. Our defensive line and linebackers do a good job stopping the run, so the next option for teams is to throw the ball. If we step our game up and eliminate their catches and their long passes, it’s going to help the defense out.

Q: Why is the defense causing as many turnovers as it did last season?

ROGERS: Sometimes we’ve been in position, sometimes the quarterback does a good job of holding onto the ball or throwing the ball away. We don’t have as many turnovers as we had last year, but we’re better in a lot more categories. You asked about our pass defense – we’re giving up 184 yards a game. Last year, we weren’t near that. Turnovers are great, but if you’re getting off the field with a lot of three-and-outs, you give your offense a lot of possessions. That’s good too.

Q: Is it working to your advantage that teams are focusing on not turning the ball over? Are they being more cautious?

ROGERS: Turnovers are about defenses being in the right position to get the interception. Some guys jump a route. Some guys punch the ball out of ball carriers’ hands. A lot of ways to get turnovers, you just have to make a conscious effort to keep working for them. We’re trying, but we aren’t going to go out of our way to say, “I’m going to jump this route because we don’t have the turnovers we had last year.” We play defense. If it’s third and four and they gain three yards, we’ll take that.

Q: Do you feel like Dashon Goldson is playing better than he was last year?

ROGERS: I think so. He can be 15, 16 yards deep and the opposing coaches might think he’s in Cover 2, next thing you know, a run comes and he stops the run for a three or four-yard gain from back there. I think he does a good job of disguising. He’s studying a lot more. He knows what opposing offenses are trying to do. He’s going to make a lot more plays.

Q: Did you know much about him before you came here?

ROGERS: I didn’t know much. There were a few guys I heard about when I was out there on the East Coast. They’re weren’t playing so well as a team, so they weren’t getting a lot of media attention besides Patrick Willis, basically. Being a DB, I followed Dashon, but he just picked his game up to a whole other level. We were just talking the other day that we have to pick our game up to another level. It’s the second half of the season. We want to put our offense in a good position to make the playoffs.

Q: You guys are the No.3 seed right now. Have you guys talked about getting the No.1 or No.2 seed?

ROGERS: We haven’t talked about it. We’ve talked about putting our self in a good position against the division teams. Where we fall in the playoffs, we fall. It doesn’t matter.

Alex Smith: “Love getting everybody involved, for sure.”

SANTA CLARA — Here is what Alex Smith said at his locker Wednesday afternoon, courtesy of the 49ers.

You talked to Peter King about WR Randy Moss’ influence on the team. Have you seen his work ethic rub off on the other receivers? Have you seen his influence in action?

“All of our guys work hard, I didn’t mean it in a sense like that. Here’s a guy that’s, I mean how many years has he played in the league? I’m not sure, but anytime you get guys that have played 10- plus years in the NFL, they’re doing something right. They aren’t here and they don’t play that long for accident. Here’s a guy that’s a Hall of Famer. Even me as a quarterback, I don’t play that position, but yeah, you watch the work ethic, you watch the little things that go on day in and day out and he’s been a great example of that. It’s not just showing up on gameday. For people that think that, it’s not how it works. The guy just comes in and work, day in and day out, takes a lot of pride in what he does, run and pass. I think that’s been great.”

Does the run part of that surprise you? A veteran like that?

“I didn’t have any expectation, but in the meeting rooms, the attention to detail for sure. The questions asked, yeah, especially in the run game, no question. You can tell it’s something that he thinks about a lot and takes a lot of pride in.”

The bye week came right at the halfway point for you guys this year. 6-2, pretty good first half, what’d you see reflecting back and as you look forward now?

“For me, you have a few days off and you enjoy it with your family a little bit. Not really reflecting I guess, we’ll have time for that in the offseason. I mean, you hope you’re playing you’re best football come November and December. You hope as the season goes on, you’re playing better and better. As you move into the back half of the season, yeah, these are huge games. A majority of division games come this time of year, so you hope you’re playing your best football.”

How was the tempo in practice yesterday? Did everyone pick up where you left off?

“Yeah I thought it was great, great to get some reps out there. A day early, kind of knock some of the rust off, so to speak, from the days off. Thought it was great, didn’t see much. Guys came out and ran hard, was a lot of energy.”

RB Frank Gore was saying yesterday that this offensive line was giving him holes that he’s never had to run in before and the best O-line he’s ever played for. What’s your impression of how great this unit has been?

“I think they have a lot on their plate, week in and week out. We ask them to do a lot, run and pass. Really, our balance starts with them, the ability in the run game and then protect in the pass game. They have a lot of on their plate and they’ve done it, week in and week out. They continue to execute, it’s not just physically but mentally. They come into games ready to play, they know what they’re doing, they know their adjustments and they go out there and make them. They play fast. Really allowing us to be so balanced, it starts up front.”

I wouldn’t dare ask a scheme question, but teams, including the Rams, Jeff Fisher talked about what a unique run scheme you guys have, the very unique things you do that no other NFL teams are doing. Can you just talk about the creativity of it in a general sense?

“Yeah, I mean, better question for the coaches. But for me, I do feel like for one, everyone’s involved in the run game and we present a lot. I feel like we’re not predictable. Sometimes, stuff’s coming in the week and we’re going out and running it and a little bit learning it there. Don’t feel like they’re certainly out there knowing what we’re doing. We do a lot. We run inside, we run outside. We run all the schemes that there are. It’s fun.”

Not predictable in the sense that also you line up and they don’t know, ‘Okay, here comes a run?’ It could be run…

“Yeah, for sure. I mean, that’s the great thing, especially when you are balanced and you’re staying ahead of the chains, putting positive plays together that, run and pass. If you’re effective in both, it really makes it tough on a defense. And the more multiple you are, the better.”

What about the Rams defense?

“They’re good. Good across the board. It starts up front, really good D-line. Lot of guys that can make plays and win one-on-one. Very good at the linebacker level and then got a lot better in the secondary as well with the two new corners. Playing good football. They do a lot. They disguise well in the back end. They’re a little unorthodox in some of the coverages they play. It’s just not your typical things you see week-in, week-out. So, new stuff to get ready for.”

Is it comfortable to have some veterans back there as opposed to last year when they were just plugging guys in?

“Yeah, some veterans and [CB Cortland] Finnegan came over and was with that system in Tennessee. Two veteran guys at safety that really know what they’re doing, play well, disguise well.”

Are you pleased with the strides you guys have made on third down and red zone and what contributes to that?

“I haven’t looked at that stuff enough. You’re just trying to go out there and play down-in and down-out. I think it really starts staying ahead of the chains, not getting in bad third down situations. Third-and-short’s a lot easier than third-and-long. And same in the red zone, just a matter of executing down there. Just looking to get better and better obviously. Right in the middle of it right now, so just trying to take the right steps.”

Do you feel more confident down there with the weapons you have and the timing you guys have had these last few weeks?

“Love getting everybody involved, for sure. That kind of goes into all this, get down there and give them a lot to think about, not predictable. Everybody’s got to get their hand in there and makes it tough on the defense.”

They said that you guys are sort of a blueprint for what a lot of teams want to do at this point and that your coach said that just makes him want to  kick them in the shins. Is that about right?

“I don’t know. Don’t know what to think about, I don’t pay a lot of attention to some of that stuff during the week. There’s a lot of coach-speak that goes on back and forth. I certainly don’t read about it, I only hear it through you guys. So, I don’t think we’re certainly where we want to be. We know what we’re capable of, but a lot left ahead of us.”

Hearing opposing coaches heap praise on the 49ers during their weekly conference call is nothing new. Rams coach Jeff Fisher, however, broke new ground today by continually citing San…

Fisher says Rams, Seahawks and Cardinals are “quite a ways behind” 49ers offensively

St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher spoke on a conference call with Bay Area reporters Wednesday morning. Here’s what he said about the 49ers.

Q: Did you feel the NFC was an ascendant division when you took the Rams job – a lot of young teams?

FISHER: Yeah, I feel like the division has improved. Obviously, after the first half of the season you can say it certainly has, at least if you look at the statistics from a defensive standpoint. With the exception of the Niners, offensively the remaining three of us are quite a ways behind. Defensively, it looks like certainly everybody’s improving.

Q: What do you make of this 49ers offense?

FISHER: I can’t remember having to prepare for an offense that was so well-coached and diversified in the run game, and so talented. And then you add the multiplicity of the passing game and [Alex Smith’s] decision making ability – it’s no surprise to me that they were able to accomplish what they accomplished last year and what’s ahead of them this year.

Q: What do you mean when you say so diversified in the run game?

FISHER: The different types of run concepts, without getting too specific. They know what I’m talking about.

Q: Does the offensive line allow them to be so diversified?

FISHER: And the fullback and the tight ends and the receivers, yes.

Q: How difficult is it to prepare for a line like that?

FISHER: It’s a very, very talented team. They create matchups to favor them. There are very few weaknesses on that football team there, especially on the offensive side. They just don’t make mistakes.

Q: Going back a couple years to Tennessee, what was it like having Randy Moss on your team briefly?

FISHER: I had great respect for what Randy had accomplished throughout his career, was very, very impressed with him in a short time there. He was a tremendous teammate, had a huge impact on our young receiver when he was there – his day off, his work ethic, the way he practiced, how competitive he is. I was very impressed. Having experienced that firsthand, I know that he just carried that over and he’s probably having a huge impact with all their receivers.

Q: The 49ers could very well not have anyone on their injury report this week. How rare is that at this stage of the season that a team can be as healthy as the 49ers?

FISHER: They’re 100 percent healthy at halftime and they’re in position to make the run that they’re expected to make.

Gore ready to get back to work

Frank Gore said he's been having fun running through the big holes the offensive line has been creating all season. And his blockers are just as excited heading into Sunday's game against the Rams.

Jacobs: “I feel really good now – that’s all I can elaborate on.”

SANTA CLARA – Brandon Jacobs spoke at his locker Tuesday afternoon. Here’s what he said about his health and his mindset.

Q: Your knee is feeling pretty good?

JACOBS: Yeah. I’ve had a long break (chuckles). I feel good. I’m working hard every day.

Q: Do you feel better now than you have in years past because of the long break?

JACOBS: I feel really good now – that’s about all I can elaborate on.

Q: Just to be clear – your health is not an issue?

JACOBS: To me, no. I practice every day. If something was wrong, I wouldn’t do that.

Q: You don’t feel behind, do you?

JACOBS: Nuh-uh (shakes head). I work hard every day – that’s the answer I’ll go with. Go talk to Coach Harbaugh for everything else you want to know. I’m not elaborating about it because every time I do, it seems I get destroyed in the media for it, so I’m not going to say anything about it. I’m going to come to work every day, work hard and that’s that. I’m going to enjoy these days with my teammates, and that’s that. That’s all I can do, right?

Aldon Smith addresses the alleged restaurant incident

SANTA CLARA – A few Bay Area reporters approached Aldon Smith in the locker room Tuesday afternoon. We asked him if he wanted to talk about the report that he got jumped outside a restaurant in Columbus, Missouri last week. Here’s what he said.

ALDON SMITH: “Nothing happened. I said what I had to say. That’s it. I’m not talking about it. Nothing happened. Nothing happened. Nothing happened. Nothing happened. Nothing happened.”

He said it five times in a row, once to each reporter.

ME: Did anything happen?

He laughed.

ALDON SMITH: “Nothing happened.”

ME: I have a follow-up question.

Q: Can you rephrase that?

Here’s what Jim Harbaugh said at his Monday press conference about the St. Louis Rams in general and their quarterback, Sam Bradford, in particular.

HARBAUGH: [The Rams] are playing good football. I think it’s an improved team. It seems like they’re doing a very good job.

Q: Did you watch film of them this week?

HARBAUGH: Yes.

Q: What new challenges do they present your team?

HARBAUGH: New challenges…schematically? Personnel-wise? Personnel-wise they’re a much healthier team than they were a year ago. There are some things that are new schematically. Some new personnel.

Q: What have you seen from Rams’ QB Sam Bradford this season? How has he improved?

HARBAUGH: He’s always been a pretty top-notch guy. We didn’t see him last year – he was inactive for both games that we played against him. He’s got all the things you look for in a top-notch quarterback in this league: Calm demeanor in the pocket; excellent technique, footwork, arm strength; real good location. Good football player.

Alex Smith says 49ers laid an egg against Vikings and Giants

Mike Florio interviewed Alex Smith on Pro Football Talk Live Friday morning. Florio asked Smith what the 49ers learned from their losses to the Vikings and the Giants, and here’s what Smith said.

ALEX SMITH: “What it takes to win. I really feel like before those weeks we were feeling good, we had won back-to-back games, we got off to a great start against Green Bay and Detroit, and then to kind of go to Minnesota and lay an egg – not to take anything away from them, obviously they beat us. We just didn’t prepare and play as well as we were capable of.

“Then to put two great wins together after that, and then another one with the Giants. The thing that stuck out about the Giants game was that it was so uncharacteristic of our style of play, especially offensively. Just inefficient, turning the ball over, not doing all the little things it takes to win games.”

Harbaugh explains the 4 sacks allowed vs. Cardinals defense

SANTA CLARA — Here’s how Jim Harbaugh explained the four sacks allowed by the 49ers offense against the Cardinals last night, courtesy of the 49ers.

Four sacks seemed to be the only question mark. Overlooking it together, do you see a trend, it looks like a couple times Alex pulled it down something wasn’t there right away and he had no other choices. What accounts for the four sacks, was there an overall theme that linked them together?

“One for sure was we didn’t give him a very good play call. Another we got covered and glad he didn’t throw the ball to where he was supposed to throw it. And then another one, he looked to the wrong side of the field. The read should have taken him to the right instead of the left and I can’t remember the fourth.”

Right guard Alex Boone was quickly beaten to his left on the fourth sack.

Harbaugh on the Alex Smith-to-Michael Crabtree red zone connection

SANTA CLARA — Here’s what Jim Harbaugh said at his Tuesday press conference about the red zone connection between Alex Smith and Michael Crabtree, courtesy of the 49ers.

Michael Crabtree said he’s been working a lot in practice with Alex Smith, as far as getting into the red zone. He had two red zone touchdowns, obviously last night. But, before that he had only had two in the last three seasons. What goes into in your mind, making a good red zone wide receiver?

“It was really evident in this ball game, just two guys really being on the same page. On the first touchdown, perfectly thrown ball and great hands catch. Great strong hands catch by Michael on the stop fade. And then Michael’s second touchdown, just two guys again, making a play, being on the same page. Knowing body language. Seeing body language. Made eye contact and the two of them made a play. I think that evidence speaks for itself, two guys on the same page.”

On that play particularly, were those routes run? It looks like WR Kyle Williams was almost in the same area as Michael? Was that play as clean as it was supposed to be?

“No. That’s what I’m saying, the two guys were on the same page. Michael really broke off his route. Alex read his body language. Michael came back inside. Alex hit him and then Crab found the lane to the end zone.”

I see what you’re saying, it was an in-route adjustment. Kyle was running one way but Michael was going back.

“Right. They both were on the same page.”

Harbaugh on Vernon Davis

SANTA CLARA — Jim Harbaugh held a press conference Tuesday afternoon. Here’s what he said about Vernon Davis.

HARBAUGH: “There’s some things that some defenses are doing, there’s no question about it. Just look at the tape, look at the action. They’re focusing a lot of attention on Vernon Davis. Even before he gets into a route, defensive ends are disengaging on their pass rush and making sure that they chip Vernon on the way out, stay with him for three, four, five yards, which doesn’t allow them to get into their pass rush lanes. So that’s something that’s affecting him getting the ball, but it’s also opening up some other options. It’s pretty plain to see.”

Joe Staley says Alex Smith is feeling pretty good about himself

SANTA CLARA – Joe Staley spoke at his locker Tuesday afternoon. Here’s what he said about Alex Smith.

Q: Did you see your coach’s “gobble, gobble, turkey” quote about criticism directed toward Alex Smith?

STALEY: I did.

Q: Has he ever used that language with you guys?

STALEY: Never.

Q: Do you know what it meant?

STALEY: Just a lot of talk. Gobble, gobble. That’s never been an issue in the locker room. It’s just people talking.

Q: What year would go by without Alex Smith taking criticism?

STALEY: Never. He’s won 19 games in the last two years, and people still question whether he’s a leader of this football team. There’s no question in our locker room or on our team – he’s our quarterback.

Q: He downplayed his finger injury. Can you tell if it’s affected him?

STALEY: I don’t think it’s been an issue. He never brought it up once. If it was, that would be stupid. It’s a finger (laughs).

Q: He’s a quarterback.

STALEY: Who cares? (More laughs).

Q: Do you ever encourage Alex to go on twitter and defend himself?

STALEY: No, he would never go on twitter. Although, on the flight he was checking out twitter because he was trending, I guess. That’s a big deal (laughs).

Q: You caught him looking at it?

STALEY: Yeah, he sits next to me on the plane. It was very out of character for him. I guess he was feeling pretty good about himself.

Q: Is Alex Smith your ghostwriter on twitter?

STALEY: No, but I’ve offered to ghostwrite his account. He’s not into it.

Should 49ers trade for Dwayne Bowe?

Tuesday is the NFL trading deadline, and according to Peter King, Kansas City Chiefs Pro Bowl wide receiver Dwayne Bowe is available.

Evan Silva tweeted last night it would take at least a third round pick to trade for Bowe. The 49ers happen to have two third round picks next year.

So, I ask you: Should the 49ers trade for Bowe?

He’s big, he’s fast and he’s one of the most talented wide receivers in the NFL. He caught 15 touchdown passes in 2010.

On the other hand, he’s a free agent after this season.

And what would the 49ers do with Bowe if they traded for him anyway? Stockpiling receivers when you don’t throw them ball doesn’t make sense.

The 49ers have Michael Crabtree who they are determined to feature, Randy Moss who is good for maybe two catches a game and falls down when defenders draw near for the tackle, Mario Manningham who doesn’t see enough balls, Ted Ginn Jr. who seldom sees the field on a normal down and distance, Kyle Williams who is featured occasionally but mainly is a returner, and A.J. Jenkins who has yet to see the field.

Pick your poison: Eliminating Vernon Davis comes with a price

Big day for tight ends

I presume you all have been glued to Fox today and are watching the World Series right now.

Did you happen to notice how many the tight ends had great games today? Rob Gronkowski caught eight passes for 146 yards and 2 touchdowns against the St. Louis Rams.

Jason Witten, tight end for the Dallas Cowboys, caught 18 passes for 167 yards against the New York Giants.

Perry Fewell, the Giants’ defensive coordinator, used single coverage, double coverage and combination coverages on Witten, but he still got open and Tony Romo still got him the ball.

49ers injury report: Gore, Manningham expected to start

After sustaining a rib injury against Seattle, Frank Gore is expected to start on Monday Night, as is Mario Manningham, who returned to full practice.

Alex Smith’s injured finger no longer an issue according to Harbaugh

Jim Harbaugh spoke Saturday afternoon in the 49ers media tent. Here’s what he said about Alex Smith’s injured finger.

QB Alex Smith said he thought he benefitted from having three days off where he didn’t throw, just as far as his finger was concerned. Can you tell any difference in the way he’s chucking it in practice this week?

“Yeah, it was a good week throwing the ball, very good this week. I think he feels very good physically. Confident going into the game and ready to roll.”

If that was an issue, do you think that’s something that’s behind him?

“[Nodded yes].”

Cosell: “The 49ers want to make this a physical game, not a run-around game.”

Greg Cosell spoke with Doug Farrar Friday morning on Yahoo’s Shutdown Corner Week 8 preview podcast. Here’s how Cosell said the 49ers will run against the Cardinals’ defensive front Monday night.

FARRAR: San Francisco’s offensive line is much, much, much better. They were rocking (Seahawks DT) Brandon Mebane and putting him on his (rear) over and over.

COSELL: Yes. That was a great offensive line performance.

FARRAR: What the 49ers are doing is not unsophisticated. It’s very much power – take the main guy (on the defensive line), take your center (Jonathan Goodwin) and (Mike) Iupati, and just beat the crap out of him. How does that matchup with the Cardinals defensive front?

COSELL: In a base 3-4, it’s a little different block concepts. What you’d like to do against a base 3-4 is structure runs where you can get offensive linemen to the inside linebackers quickly. What you don’t want to have is the inside linebackers to attack downhill and eat up the gaps. So you can trap, you can do wham concepts where you post the nose guard and then have a wham on him so the center can quickly go up to the second level. There are different run concepts you can use to get offensive linemen up to the second-level inside linebackers quickly, and I think you’ll see those kinds of concepts because (Cardinals inside linebacker) Daryl Washington can freaking run now. You don’t want him running free. You want him engaging bigger people as quickly as possible.

FARRAR: I’ve seen him everywhere. I’ve seen him at the line. I’ve seen him deeper than their safeties. Wow.

COSELL: Yes. The 49ers want to make this a physical game, not a run-around game.

Harbaugh breaks down the Cardinals

SANTA CLARA — Here’s what Jim Harbaugh said Thursday about the Arizona Cardinals.

Do you get the sense that the Cardinals are, have been or are a big-time rival for the 49ers?

“Division opponent, I really believe that your next game is your most important game and that’s how we’ve approached it around here.”

What habit do you need to keep when you’re defending Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald?

“What habit do we need to keep?”

What habits do you have to have to stay true to the plan?

“You have to have a good plan. We have to play our best team defense all the way. Especially in the secondary. He’s somebody that’s going to get your attention, every single snap. He’s a top, top player in this league and made some big plays against us last year.”

You were blown away with the physicality against the Seahawks. With the long rest now, do you expect that level to be increased with the long rest you had?

“Well, we hope and expect really to have a great day of preparation today. That’s what we’re placing our expectations on. See if we can’t have a great practice, great meetings. Hopefully the best of the year. That would be outstanding.”

How do you have the best meeting of the year?

“They’re interactive. They’re prepared well by the coaches. Players are full speed mentally, asking good questions. Have answers on the tip of their tongue. An interactive, high energy meeting.”

How often do you guys do team meetings, like the whole team, rather than position groups?

“How many times a week? Off the top of my head, to give you an answer, a couple of times.”

Aldon Smith explains why Cardinals have given up 35 sacks

SANTA CLARA — Here’s what Aldon Smith said Thursday about the Arizona Cardinals.

Q: How do you view this game against the Cardinals?

ALDON SMITH: It’s the next game. It’s a big game. It’s a Monday night game. It’s a division opponent.

Q: Calais Campbell said he hates the 49ers with a passion. Do you guys share the same feelings toward them?

ALDON SMITH: I’m sorry he feels that way, first of all. We’re preparing to play the Cardinals and we compete hard against whoever we play against.

Q: The Cardinals have given up 35 sacks. Have you seen anything on film that explains why they’re having so much trouble protecting their quarterbacks?

ALDON SMITH: Just from the O-line not protecting to the quarterback not getting the ball out. Our biggest thing is we have to capitalize on our opportunities and get back there and make some plays and get some sacks.
