San Fransisco Looks To Stay Strong In Week 12 by SBRForum.com

It was a massacre this past Monday night as the 49ers completely demolished a strong Chicago Bears team. Granted, both teams had backup quarterbacks in, but the Niners Colin Kaepernick clearly outshined the Bears Jason Campbell on this go around. …

Roman says the Saints defense uses “a multitude of overload blitzes at times.”

Greg Roman held a press conference Thursday afternoon. Here’s what he said about the Saints defense, courtesy of the 49ers.

Opening Statement:

“Looks like a lot of people left early to get that turkey on their plate. I hope everybody is doing well. Happy Thanksgiving, we certainly have a lot to be thankful for. Getting ready to play the Saints in a tough environment. The last time we were in that environment was the first preseason game last year. We know how tough it is to play down there and how talented their team is, how well coached they are and what a winning tradition they have built there. Kind of have a half a day today here on Thanksgiving, but the guys came in early, got a lot of work done and we’re progressing on schedule. Any questions?”

About the Saints defense, how different is it than the one you faced 10 months ago?

“Great question. It’s a little bit of a hybrid. They have kept some of what they did last year and then they’ve combined it with what some of what the Rams have done. It’s very multiple. It’s a lot of different looks, and they’ve gotten better as the year went on. They’ve got really good players. WThey’ve got [LB Jonathan] Vilma, who’s a great leader and [DE] Will Smith, who’s one of the best defensive ends, one of the most physical guys you’ll see. They’re just getting better as it goes. We’ve got our work cut out for us and we know that their whole team, they’ve got great formula for winning there, with their offense, defense and special teams. So, it’s going to take a complimentary team effort here to go down and beat the Saints.”

Regardless of the quarterback, who on that defense or what about that defense is a key, a focal point, something that the Saints really try to confuse guys with?

“Mainly protections. I think we, as a staff, have a lot of respect for their staff and how they try to attack protections. They understand what the offense is doing and how they protect. It’s obvious that they study it and then they try to violate it. And they’ve got good players, so that’s a lethal combination. A multitude of overload blitzes at times, and then at times they make you think they’re bringing an overload blitz and then everybody drops. So, they’ve got it all. It’s graduate work, is what it is. It’s graduate level football and they’re good at it.”

Is S Roman Harper kind of the catalyst?

“Not really. I mean, they all are. It’s not like you can just say, ‘Hey, there’s Roman Harper. This is what’s going to happen.’ They definitely, pretty diverse at this point.”

Is there any lingering resentment over what was said about your offensive players, before the playoff game about what former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams had to say to his team?

“I don’t think so. I don’t think there’s any resentment whatsoever. What was said in the past is just that, it’s the past. It’s irrelevant. I think our players are really focused on 2012 and how important this game is to our season.”

Fangio says Aldon Smith has “combination of strength, size, speed, slither and long arms.”

Vic Fangio held a press conference Thursday afternoon. Here’s what he said about the 49ers defense, courtesy of the 49ers.

It looked like LB Patrick Willis had a really good game in coverage on Monday. Is that typical? Is that what you expect from him?

“He did. Yes, he did have a very good game in coverage. Particularly, [RB Matt] Forte’s a tough back to handle. They went to him early on a critical third down that he stopped where it was one-on-one coverage. And thought Patrick had a very exceptional game Monday.”

Speaking of good games, LB Aldon Smith was effective. He seemed to do it a number of different ways, with moves, with just brute strength. Has he gotten stronger since his rookie year? Or was he capable of that type of just shoving guys back into the quarterback last year?

“I think he’s always had really good strength. He has gotten stronger from year one to year two with an offseason in here working out with our strength staff. But, he’s always had good, strong, natural, brute strength and he’s got strong hands, too. And the combination of that, his length, and his slither ability, he’s a tough guy to block.”

Have you been using him more on both sides?

“We’ve been doing that since we’ve been here. We have certain packages where he lines up on the left, certain where he lines up on the right. Now, by far he’s more on the right. But, we can get him on the left at any time we want.”

I haven’t noticed he and DT Justin Smith playing opposite too often?

“Yeah.”

Until Monday.

“No, we’ve been doing that, not a lot, but it happens anywhere from five to 10 times a game.”

Not to get into too much hyperbole, but that was 5.5 sacks. Do you remember that type of performance by a pass rusher that you’ve ever coached?

“Not that I’ve been directly involved with. I can’t remember. I know there’s been games where guys have had more. But, I can’t recall one that I was directly involved with.”

Saints interim Head Coach Joe Vitt said he reminded him of former Chiefs linebacker Derrick Thomas?

“Yeah, I think that’s a little bit of a stretch. Derrick was a great pass rusher, so they are similar in that way. But, Derrick was a speed rusher primarily. And that was bailiwick. Aldon’s more of a combination of strength, size, speed, slither and long arms. I think Aldon’s more of a variety-type pass rusher. Where Thomas, Hall of Famer in his own right, was a speed rusher.”

Gore ready to accept more active role

With the switch to the less experienced Colin Kaepernick, veteran Frank Gore may be called upon to take an increased role in the 49ers offense.

Kaepernick discusses his first QB controversy

SANTA CLARA – Colin Kaepernick spoke after Alex Smith in the 49ers locker room Wednesday afternoon. Here’s what Kaepernick said.

Q: Have you been involved in a situation like this?

KAEPERNICK: No.

Q: What have your talks with Alex been like?

KAEPERNICK: We’ve always been on each other’s side, we’ve always supported each other. We’re going to keep doing that.

Q: Is it up in the air who’s going to start?

KAEPERNICK: They haven’t told me anything yet.

Q: When do you expect to know?

KAEPERNICK: I don’t know. They’ll let me know when they make a decision.

Q: What about practice snaps? Until Alex is cleared will you get most of the reps?

KAEPERNICK:I don’t know. They haven’t told me anything yet.

Q: What stood out to you when you looked at team’s offensive performance Monday night?

KAEPERNICK:The biggest thing for me was there was a couple more throws I wish I would have hit as far as the long one to Vernon, a couple sideline throws I wish I would have hit.

Q: Do you feel like you’ve earned another start?

KAEPERNICK: That’s really not up to me. That’s up to Coach.

Q: Alex was saying he wants to show good character and he wants the QB room to show good character so team can look up to you guys? Do have same feeling?

KAEPERNICK: Yeah, definitely. We both want to do whatever’s best for the team. Whatever’s going to make us win.

Q: How do you prepare this week?

KAEPERNICK: Same way I’ve been preparing all season.

Q: What was your reaction when you were told Sunday night you were starting?

KAEPERNICK: I told my parents, I told my family. Other than that, I just went about business as usual.

Q: Do you feel a different dynamic with you and Alex now?

KAEPERNICK: It’s the same as it has been.

Q: How do you keep it from not getting uncomfortable?

KAEPERNICK: We’re just going to put the team first. That’s what’s most important.

Q: Do you think you proved Monday night that you can put a team on your back and lead it?

KAEPERNICK: I don’t know about putting a team on my back. Our offensive line played amazing. Our defense played great. Our receivers made plays. They made it easy on me to go out there.

Q: You first NFL game came in the Superdome (2011 preseason opener). What kind of memories do you have of that game?

KAEPERNICK: Bad memories. That was kind of an all-out (blitzing) fest when we played them last time. Hopefully, we go out and have a better performance this time around.

Q: How much of your success Monday is due to having the mental game down?

KAEPERNICK: I think that’s the biggest part if being mentally prepared so you know where you want to go with the football.

Q: How did that part of the game for you?

KAEPERNICK: I felt very comfortable with it.

Q: What have the past two days been like? Have you gotten a lot of message, e-mails?

KAEPERNICK: A lot of messages, things like that. But I did the same thing I’ve done after every game. Came in, worked out, watched film, taken care of my body.

Brent Jones on Kaepernick: “When he walked on the field, he looked like the starting quarterback.”

Brent Jones spoke on KNBR this afternoon. Here’s what he said about the 49ers quarterback controversy.

Q: Based on what you saw last night, what direction do you the 49ers ought to go at quarterback?

BRENT JONES: “I watched Colin Kaepernick all preseason, and it didn’t seem like he had taken it to the next level from last year. It wasn’t a demonstrative, ‘Yeah, I’m competing for the starting quarterback position.’ I had only seen him in the Wild Cat formations the few times Jim would bring him in.

“That being said, I was really impressed with him in the Rams game after the first four or five snaps. It looked like all of a sudden he was starting to take control. He grew from that experience last week, having a week of practice under his belt he grew exponentially.

“When he walked on the field last night, he looked like he was the starting quarterback. I look at body language. First play of the game, he was so smooth. It was a great play action fake, Heck of a pass and he just kept going from there.

“What you have is a young kid who’s very raw, yet talented. A kid who’s an athlete, who creates problems for defenses because of his running ability, his size, his strength, his mobility in the pocket. He made a few plays last night that, quite honestly, Alex would not have made – scrambling in the pocket, moving around and then pulling the trigger on a couple of big passes, one for a touchdown, and it’s interesting because against the Rams he would have ran those balls. He would have scrambled. But I was really blown away with his awareness, his pocket presence, his command, his leadership.

“All those things being said, I wanted to hear what Jim would say in the postgame press conference, because no matter what I think or what any fan thinks, it’s really what Jim Harbaugh thinks. And Jim did not squash the quarterback controversy whatsoever. He could have said, ‘Alex Smith is out, he missed a game with a concussion and he is our starter going forward.’ Jim basically said he likes to play the hot hand, which leaves it open in a pretty significant way.

“I’m sure Alex didn’t want to hear that, but the reality is Jim knew what he was doing. Everything that he said last night – and calculated in his head, because he had plenty of time to think about it – he exactly what he was going to say would create a reaction in the locker room and outside the locker room. He’s not surprised by this. He’s leaving it open right now. So, there is a quarterback controversy, for the lack of a better word. I don’t know about ‘controversy.’ There is a competition. In Jim’s mind, it’s an open field.”

Q: Do you think Kaepernick has outperformed their expectations?

BRENT JONES: “Yes, and it’s one of those great problems to have. It was that significant: A big Monday night game the 49ers needed to have against one of the best defenses in the NFL, one of the top teams in the NFC, with your starting quarterback out. Jay Cutler didn’t play, but all the Bears defenders were playing. He made them look silly all night.

“The 49ers played offensively as well as I’ve seen them play all year in my opinion. Frank Gore had his classic 17 attempts. He had some good, tough running yards. He was up around 80 yards. Kendall Hunter ran hard, which is always great to see. And Kaepernick will always be able to make big plays with his feet, but he was so poised and so impressive in the pocket, and that’s the one thing. You knew he had a strong arm. You can document he has a stronger arm than Alex. He’s a big kid. He’s a strong kid. But he has mobility in the pocket, and his awareness of where the rush was coming, to side step, to spin, to get out of trouble and to still make a play, because one of the greatest times that you can make a big play is a quarterback scrambling and moving out of the pocket. The defense has to account for two things: They have to account for the quarterback running and then covering the wide receiver and tight end. It creates quite a conundrum for the defense. If you have that, it is a powerful asset, and I think the 49ers probably sat back and said: ‘Holy cow.’ This is what we saw from this kid at Nevada Reno that we haven’t seen in this full context yet.

“But if they have that, if Colin Kaepernick plays like that for the rest of the season, the 49ers aren’t going to lose. He creates so much of a problem. His accuracy was great. He made a couple of tough throws that you have to have a strong arm to make. His touch was great. It’s hard to get that much out of a young quarterback this early in his career.

“We tend to want to overreact. He’s still a young quarterback. He can still come back in a week or two weeks or three weeks and make young quarterback mistakes, but you saw his full potential exemplified last night. Now, what does that mean going forward? I don’t know, because I’m not in Jim’s mind and I’m not in the locker room, but Jim didn’t squash it. I don’t know whether he wants to inspire Alex to pick it up – I know he had a good game a few weeks ago with his completion percentage, but prior to that our offense was lagging and not looking so great. We had a couple of games where we were barely squeaking by. The reality is Colin Kaepernick creates massive problems for defenses trying to prepare for the 49ers.”

Q: I was surprised they came out passing.

BRENT JONES: “It was a gutsy plan, and I love that. It caught the Bears so off guard. The 49ers coaches absolutely outcoached the heck out of the Bears last night. It wasn’t even close. The Bears never saw it coming. They never adjusted. It was like a one round prize fight and they just took upper cut after upper cut until it was a knock down and a knock out. You could see constantly the play action sucking those linebackers up. The offense was operating on all cylinders. It felt like the Niners could dial up anything and make it successful. It’s just rare that you have a young quarterback who’s able to pull the trigger on so many variations of offensive plays.

“There’s a part of me that thinks Jim played the media perfectly this week. I thought Alex Smith was playing for sure. And I think the Bears may have fallen into that. I don’t know how much they prepared for Kaepernick, and if they did, they probably prepared for a disheveled second-year player scrambling a lot vs. making great play action fakes, standing tall in the pocket and making laser-type throws on the money all over the field.”

Q: Don’t you think the 49ers should stick with Alex Smith? He’s done well.

BRENT JONES: “I think what’s in the 49ers coaches’ heads right now, is does the upside of Colin Kaepernick outweigh his downside vs. Alex. Alex isn’t going to have the same degree of downside as Colin would in a pressure situation and having coverages disguised and what have you. That’s the situation they’re presented with and that could be a moving target. It hasn’t been handled on a weekly basis successfully ever. So Jim at some point over the next three or four weeks, or maybe before the playoffs, or maybe he tinkers with the position and makes a package for each – I have no idea what Jim is going to do. Just know that Jim has a plan. The reality is nobody else knows it, or maybe a couple of the coaches do.

“We’re in store for some excitement at this kind of lull point in the season. Of course it was a great game last night, but if there was an MVP, man, it was Colin Kaepernick. I never thought I’d be saying that, because our defense played phenomenally last night. It made the Bears look silly. Our rush defense was outstanding. Our coverage was everywhere. They couldn’t complete a pass that meant anything. It was a pretty darn significant night, but this young man took the Bay Area by storm last night, and if you’re Alex Smith, you’ve got to be thinking: ‘You’ve got to be kidding me. I have a concussion and I’m out for a week and this happens.’ But that’s why the 49ers drafted Colin Kaepernick.”

Q: The receivers seemed very pleased with Kaepernick after the game – Vernon Davis in particular.

BRENT JONES: “It’s funny how that happens. I’m sure Alex was thinking, ‘Where are my guys?’ I know Vernon’s been a big proponent and stayed strong for Alex for a couple of years now. But it just goes to show you what happens in the course of a season. Vernon hasn’t been involved the last three or four or five games. Maybe he feels like he’s getting open and he’s not getting the opportunity. And here comes Kaepernick, and he got it to a couple of play makers and all of a sudden they’re singing his praises. It’s interesting, because receivers can be a fickle crew, and your favorite quarterback is the one who throws it to you the most. Those guys had high praise for the young man last night, and rightfully so, and so did the coaching staff. That just fuels the fire of this alleged quarterback controversy.

“There are going to be people speaking up from both sides of the isle. We’ve outlined what both guys bring. It’s going to be interesting to watch if the 49ers say, ‘Our upside’s greater with Kaepernick, let’s let him role.’ One thing is for sure, I don’t think Jim’s going to decide it over this next week. He’s not going to say one guy’s definitively the starter. But I think over the next two, three, four weeks they’re probably going to both get a chance and maybe all of a sudden he draws the line in the sand and says, ‘We’re going with this guy and here’s why.’ At some point you’ve got to take the guessing out of the locker room. You’ve got to block a little bit differently for a guy who’s scrambling around back there.”

Harbaugh press conference canceled; team signs safety

Dr. York ‘perfectly comfortable’ with handling of Smith’s concussion

Dr. John York is the chair of the NFL Owners Committee on Health and Safety. After the game, Insider Matt Maiocco spoke with him about his team's handling of Alex Smith's concussion.

Young wants Harbaugh to end the QB controversy and name Alex Smith the starter immediately

Steve Young spoke on ESPN this afternoon. Here’s what he said about the 49ers quarterback controversy.

Q: Jim Harbaugh says he has two quarterbacks with a hot hand. What’s your reaction?

YOUNG: “My reaction is I want to know his true intent, because his words tell me that I’m in trouble if I’m Alex Smith. I know Jim is heavily invested in Colin and his future, but there’s nothing happening that’s forcing Jim’s hand. I think he’s going to have to back down from that unless he truly wants to push him into the mix.”

Q: Alex Smith was playing well before he got hurt. He was 7-of-8 against the Rams and 18-of-19 against the Cardinals.

YOUNG: “It was a big game last night and it was electrifying. We know all that, but it was just one ball game. That’s why I say I’m waiting for Jim to clarify exactly what his intent was last night. Going with the hot hand is one way of saying, ‘I’m going to push this, and Colin will be starting sooner than later if he continues to play well.’ I don’t know how else to read it. I can’t wait to hear what Jim says here.”

Q: For both guys, how uneasy does this make them, and how important is it for the team to know there’s one voice?

YOUNG: “It complicates the locker room. You already saw it – Vernon Davis compared Kaepernick’s throw to Tom Brady. Little things create consternation in a locker. This is a strong locker room, so it’s not going to get split. That’s not the problem. The truth is there’s only one job. As a young team trying to prove their mettle to be Super Bowl contenders, I think it’s important to have one guy go do it. That’s why this afternoon in my mind Jim needs to say ,’Alex Smith is taking us to the Super Bowl and have Colin support him.’ If he says anything less than that, it’s going to be a muddled mess and people are going to have to work through it.”

Aldon Smith leads strong defensive showing

With a steady diet of bull-rushes, Smith pulverized the Bears linemen in front of him on his way to dropping quarterback Jason Campbell for 5.5 sacks.

Harbaugh considers Kaepernick’s ‘hot hand’

With his performance Monday night, Colin Kaepernick made a convincing argument for unseating Alex Smith as the 49ers' starting quarterback.

For SF, this is a full-blown QB controversy

After Colin Kaepernick's breakout performance against the Bears, the 49ers' quarterback situation could get very very weird if Jim Harbaugh lets it.

49ers officially rule out Smith from tonight’s game

It’s official. The 49ers changed their injury report this morning, moving Alex Smith from questionable to out after an examination by 49ers medical director Daniel Garza. Colin Kaepernick will start…

Why it’s clear 49ers are banking on Alex Smith

If second-year player Colin Kaepernick were going to start, the 49ers' coaching staff would've given him all of the first-team snaps in practice in order to be properly prepared to face one of the top defenses in the NFL.

Fangio on the 49ers D’s problem covering quick slot receivers: “I don’t see it as an epidemic by any means.”

SANTA CLARA – Here’s what Vic Fangio said at his Saturday press conference about the 49ers defense’s recent struggles covering slot receivers.

ME: Your defense has struggled to cover quick inside receivers. What do you attribute that to, and has it had an effect on the overall defense?

FANGIO: Everybody has a little bit of a hard time covering some of those guys. It’s just a tough position at times for the nickel to cover, or the corner if he’s inside. We’ve gone against some good slot receivers. They’ve caught some balls on us, but I don’t see it as an epidemic by any means.

CI: Would you consider putting Perrish Cox at nickelback to see how he can do?

FANGIO: He’s the guy who plays behind Carlos in that role, and if something ever happened, Perrish would be the guy who went it. But we haven’t considered replacing Carlos with him, no.

Fangio on the 49ers run D

SANTA CLARA – Vic Fangio spoke in the media tent Saturday afternoon. Here’s what he said about the 49ers run defense, which has not performed well in three of their last four games.

Q: The run defense hasn’t been as good as it was last year. What do you attribute that to, and does it concern you?

FANGIO: Obviously it’s always a concern if you’re not playing something as well as you think you should. Obviously last week in the first two series we didn’t do that at all. Give the Rams credit – they came out and blocked us and we didn’t play to the level of intensity that was needed to be played in that game with the blocking they were giving us and the great running that the running back was doing.

Staley explains the final concussion contact test

SANTA CLARA – Joe Staley had a concussion a few weeks ago. He spoke the media tent Saturday afternoon and explained the final contact test which determines if a concussed player can play, and which Alex Smith will have to take before the Bears game.

MM: What’s the final step before coming back from a concussion?

STALEY: The final step is a contact test. That can occur basically any time up until the game. You have to clear a final contact test.

LC: What’s a contact test?

STALEY: For me, I just had to bang against another person with my helmet. Quarterback would probably be different – their job doesn’t consist of banging helmets.

LC: What’s the follow up to the test?

STALEY: Basically they ask you how you feel – if you feel good. You pass it if you feel asymptomatic. Is that the word?

MM: Yup.

LC: How long did you contact test last?

STALEY: A minute. Two minutes.

LC: So it’s really abbreviated.

STALEY: Yeah.

LC: Just so you’re standing up breathing and not having a seizure or something.

STALEY: Yeah.

CI: Whose head did you bang?

STALEY: Let’s see. Last year…I don’t remember.

LC: So you didn’t pass that test (laughs).

STALEY: This year was Al Netter or Joe Looney.

Rogers sizes up Marshall, Hester, Bennett, Amendola and Cruz

SANTA CLARA – Here’s what Carlos Rogers said Friday afternoon in the media tent about the Bears wide receivers and how they compare to Danny Amendola and Victor Cruz – two receivers Rogers has struggled to cover.

Q: What makes Brandon Marshall stand out at wide receiver for the Bears?

ROGERS: That guy’s big – 230, 240 [pounds], 6-3, 6-4. And he’s got a quarterback who can get him the ball. He’s their main guy. Any time you’ve got a guy who’s targeted 11, 12, probably even more times a game – he’s going to make his plays. We’re going to have to do a better job and try to shut him down. It’s going to be tough – he’s going to make his plays. We just want to try to get in a position to make more than he makes.

Q: How are the Bears using Devin Hester at wide receiver this season?

ROGERS: They use him in a lot of different places. He’s a speed guy, a guy who takes the top off a defense, a guy who they try to get quick screens. We know his ability as a punt returner to make moves and get up the field. They put him in [the offense] more and more. Sometimes you don’t see him as much, but when he’s in, we think there’s something up.

Q: Does he line up in the slot in three wide receiver sets, and how does he compare to Danny Amendola?

ROGERS: Amendola – he’s by far the quickest guy I’ve played with. He’s quicker than [Victor] Cruz. The guy’s real quick. Now I’ve got [Earl] Bennett – he’s still quick. He does some option routes in that slot. I’ll be matched up with him. At times, they have Marshall in the slot – they’ve got plays for him in the slot. I have to be on my game, especially when he comes in the slot. Bennett’s their slot guy, but when they put someone else in there, I’m thinking something’s up.

Rogers expects the Bears to run the ball against the 49ers

SANTA CLARA – Carlos Rogers spoke in the media tent Friday afternoon. Here’s what he said he expects from the Bears offense Monday night.

Q: The Bears have named Jason Campbell as their starter for the Monday night game. How much does that impact the game?

ROGERS: It doesn’t matter. I think both of them have strong arms, the ability to throw any throw. We know what Cutler can do. I played with Jason for a while – I know what he can do. We don’t look at them as being any different – they both can throw the ball, they both can scramble. As a defense, it’s easy to prepare for those guys when we’re looking at them the same way.

Q: They have similar styles?

ROGERS: I think so. They’re both tough. Like I said, both can make any throw on the field. Both can stand in the pocket. Both will take off and run when the middle opens up. Cutler has more experience in their offense because he’s played and Jason hasn’t played. That team, they’re going to come in and try to run the ball on us, just because we’ve given up so many yards rushing and because of last week.

Harbaugh says he’s had an “atrial flutter” almost all his life, and he feels fine

SANTA CLARA – Jim Harbaugh seemed like his normal self when he spoke in the 49ers media tent Friday afternoon. He was in a good mood, he was talkative and he smiled a lot.

As you are probably aware, he had an irregular heart beat Wednesday night and missed most of Thursday’s practice as he underwent cardioversion at Stanford Hospital.

Here’s what Harbaugh said Friday about his health, courtesy of the 49ers.

It must be great to get back to work I would imagine?

“It is, yes. It is. Sorry I missed you yesterday and thanks for rescheduling for today. Definitely good to be back. Driving over here yesterday and you’re not here and the rest of the team’s out here practicing, that’s not a good feeling. It’s like, I’ve had that dream before many times where it’s like you’re supposed to be taking a test, or the team’s out there practicing and you’re not out there. So, just glad to be out here.”

Do you have any limits?

“No. No limits. Going about everything as normal. Yeah, had a little irregular heartbeat. I’ve had it before. And now they have a procedure, a cardiovert. It’s amazing. Gets the heart rate back to normal. So, it’s great that they have that technology to get that done. But, the atrial flutter is something that I’ve had for a while, probably pretty close to all my life.”

So you’ve had this procedure done before?

“About 13 years ago I had, when I was playing football, had an ablation to deal with the atrial flutter.”

What did you feel Wednesday night that made it different that made you want to go to the hospital? What did you experience?

“Well, you know off the experience. It’s just the heart rate’s not beating normally. You don’t know that unless you get it checked by a doctor. So, it just felt like it was beating faster than normal Wednesday, Wednesday evening.”

Was that your decision, or did you have to be convinced to go in?

“No. No, the doctor said you need to go in and you need to get this done, this procedure done. So, you’re not going to be stubborn like a mule and do what the doctors tell you.”

How important just for your life, the education of it and for you today getting the word out to the people that you can reach? About your condition and about other people might be having the same condition, is that important to you?

“Yeah, I suppose so. If you’re not feeling right you need to see a doctor. I don’t know that I can make a grand statement about it.”

You said no limits. Does this mean on the practice field and on game day we’re going to see the same Jim Harbaugh, or are you going to tone down and be a little less stressed?

“No, I don’t feel like that’ll happen.”

When you had the ablation 13 years ago, was that during the season and did it affect any of your activities in a different way?

“It didn’t much, no. I remember I was playing with the San Diego Chargers and it was during training camp. And I think I missed maybe a practice as well, maybe two. It was in August training camp.”

Were the symptoms different than the one you experienced now? Better, worse, milder?

“Then, I think they may have been a little worse then, yeah.”

Did you talk to the players and how did they take?

“They said I got to make it right. I’ve got a couple fines I’ve got to pay for not being here.”

Did being away affect your game planning for Chicago at all?

“Not too much. Missed yesterday basically and tried to catch up on that last night at home and today. Feel like we’ll be caught right up soon.”

The doctor didn’t tell you anything in terms of changing the way you do things in any way, shape, or form? The doctor didn’t say take a nap at a certain point in the day, or anything like that?

“No. No, nothing like that. There are some of the suggestions with diet. So, I’m listening.”

Can you take drugs to regulate the heartbeat from this point forward? Drugs in your, prescribed you drugs?

“Yeah, gave me some aspirin and a couple other ones.”

What about meditation?

“Didn’t talk about that. I’ll talk to [LS] Brian Jennings about that. Brian Jennings will be my go-to guy there [laughs].”

Are you coachable with this stuff?
“Sure, absolutely. Yeah.”

You said you came in here yesterday while practice was going on?

“Yes.”

Did you go out to the practice field?

“Yeah, the doctor said I could go by. So, I did.”

Did you do any coaching, or was it just a visit?

“More just watched about an hour of the practice.”

So, for those that aren’t familiar with the procedure could you tell us how long it took and did you have an overnight stay, so you had the procedure actually Wednesday night?

“No, there was some tests were done Wednesday night. The procedure was done Thursday late morning. And then I was released after that.”

So, you stayed the night?

“No, I didn’t stay in the hospital overnight.”

Is this something you may have to have again? Or do they think this one will do the trick?
“So far this one they’ll evaluate it as it goes.”

Stress in any way a factor, or been given any advice on stress?

“No, didn’t.”

Do your dad or brother have any advice about this kind of stuff, or how to work your way through it? The diet? Coaches lead a very interesting lifestyle. Did they give you any advice about how to work through this stuff?

“Yeah, listen to the doctors and eat right. Yeah, they’ve said those things.”

Have your brother or you father ever experienced anything similar?

“Not that I know of, no.”

As a follow up to that, is there anything, any dietary restrictions that have been added to your lifestyle now or that were 13 years ago? Also, I understand that this may be too personal a question, but is there anybody in your family that you’ve had to reassure that it’s ok for you to go to right back to work after this?

“No, I haven’t had to reassure anybody. As far as the diet, cut out some of the caffeine and eat better.”

How do you feel about all the attention surrounding this?

“It’s quite a bit. I’m fine, fine.”

I’m hearing a lot of short answers from you about this all, but when you’re in there in the hospital and all those people are dealing with this stuff, doesn’t it after a while give you a little –set you back a little bit and think about the humanness of this? The vulnerability about this? Do you ever give yourself a big picture look about it all?

“No, I didn’t really. I hope my answers haven’t been short. I feel like I’ve been real forthcoming, telling you exactly everything I know about this, even emotionally how it feels and what not. Just glad to be back at work, glad to be preparing for this ball game. I’m fine, fine and ready to go to work.”

So you will not be a victim of burnout?

“I don’t foresee that, no.”

I think I know what he was asking. I had a heart problem and it sort of makes you think big picture.

“Big picture. Peel back the onion and get a little introspective. No, I really haven’t. I really haven’t. Just want to do what I’m supposed to do and get back to living.”

Did your wife and kids have any tips? Did your daughters say anything to you that stuck?

“The biggest one, ‘I love you.’”

Harbaugh says “there could be some subtle differences” in the game plan if Kaepernick is QB

SANTA CLARA – Here is what Jim Harbaugh said at his Monday press conference about the possibility of Colin Kaepernick starting against the Bears.

Q: Will Kaepernick get the bulk of the snaps in practice this week now that Alex is hurt?

HARBAUGH: We’ll see. It all depends on when Alex is cleared to come back to practice.

Q: Do you reach a point of no return during the week where you’ve got the game plan going and you’re going to go with Kaepernick? Or does Smith know the offense well enough to come back at any point once he gets cleared?

HARBAUGH: Rather than speculate, we’ll let it play out. There’s a progression and evaluations he has to go through before we really know anyway.

Q: Their styles are so different. Do you have to have two game plans in place whether it’s Alex or Colin at quarterback?

HARBAUGH: There could be some subtle differences. I wouldn’t call it two plans.

What do you think those subtle differences would be?

49ers burned by fakes, Akers slumping, knowing OT rules, etc.

Concussion leads to tie, QB controversy

With the way Colin Kaepernick played in relief of Alex Smith, the 49ers have a real quarterback controversy again, and nothing opens arteries in these parts quite like a quarterback argument that cannot be settled.

Tie game leaves Gore feeling sore

Frank Gore underwent X-rays after Sunday's game against the Rams and was getting around gingerly as he got dressed at his locker, where he expressed frustration over the 49ers' sluggish start.

Smith sustained concussion on sneak

While the hit from Rams linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar appeared to take a serious toll on Alex Smith, it was actually the fourth-and-1 quarterback sneak that sent the 49ers' quarterback off the field.

Vernon Davis on his role with the 49ers: “I have to accept it. I have to live with it. I have to deal with it.”

SAN FRANCISCO – Vernon Davis caught four passes for 30 yards Sunday against the Rams. The Pro Bowl tight end has not caught more than four passes in a game since Week 5 against the Bills.

I just asked Davis in the locker room how he feels about his current role on the 49ers. Here’s what he said.

ME: The last few weeks, Greg Roman has approached you after games and said, “I’m sorry, I wasn’t able to get you the ball.” Did he talk to you today after the game?

VERNON DAVIS: No. No, he didn’t.

ME: How do you feel about your level of involvement today?

VERNON DAVIS: Um…(eight-second pause). I do what I’m told. That’s pretty much it. At this moment, that’s all I can really do. My main focus is making sure that I’m a team guy, just accepting the simple fact that the coaches are giving me a certain role to play. I have to accept it. I have to live with it. I have to deal with it. I look at the bright side of things, and I know we have more games and there will be plenty of opportunities for me to help this team.

ME: Do you like your current role?

VERNON DAVIS: I accept it. We’re all competitive. Everybody on this team is competitive. For me, I want to help this team – that’s my main focus. I want to make plays – that’s what I want to do. But if it’s not given to me, I’m not going to put my head down and pout. I’ll accept it.

Harbaugh calls the Rams “a great team.”

SANTA CLARA – Here’s the full transcript of Jim Harbaugh’s Friday press conference, courtesy of the 49ers.

What did the four-star general [Bob Cone] have to tell the team afterwards?

“He had a great message for the fellas. Talked a lot about what his soldiers do in Afghanistan and how much they appreciate what our soldiers do here, our players do. And how big of fans they are of the National Football League. And a couple other really inspiring messages that I know our players really appreciated. Just the dedication of his soldiers and their loyalty to their country and to their team and to the fight that they’re in. So, it was a great message for us.”

Some teams sometimes try to avoid military themes.

“Some teams do?”

Yeah. Did he sort of embrace those, the comparison between the military and what football teams do?

“Yeah, he very much talked about the correlation. And I think I know where you’re going with that. We don’t compare what we do. We honor the military. We know that their fight is life and death. It’s different from what we do. But, if we try to emulate or in any way espouse to be like the military, it’s strictly as something that honors them.”

What was the correlation for them that he brought up?

“Talked about training, repetition, some things that they’re doing in terms of concussion-prevention detection. Some things that the NFL are, in conjunction with the armed forces, in research and development. Interesting conversation about their use of video and video games simulating duty and warfare. And definitely think there’s a correlation there with football players.”

Has it been an easy week just going back to football after the long break? Has it been a smooth week for practicing?

“It’s been a good week. Players are excited to be on the practice field and looking forward to playing. I feel really good about our preparation this week.”

Can you speak about the importance of winning divisional home games?

“They’re very important. It’s a win for you. It’s a loss for them, or vice versa. So, it counts as a game and a half, or two-game swing, however you look at it. But, you keep track of them and at the end of the year, those are huge in determining who wins the division.”

It’s been a while since you played. Any correlation in talking to the general, did he talk much about keeping an even keel, not getting too hyped up, too over excited or anything like that? Keeping an even keel and not getting too excited and focus on not getting too over excited to get back to play?

“Well, not specifically.”

Will you expect RB Brandon Jacobs to have a role in Sunday’s game?

“We’ll see. We don’t really talk about who we’re going to dress and what their roles are going to be from week to week.”

Your defense last year, obviously, was excellent. This year through a half, it might be kind of even better. Can you just talk a little bit how that you’ve matured together as a group and maybe become a little bit tighter and stronger as a unit together being together this long now?

“Yeah, I think [defensive coordinator] Vic [Fangio] did a good job talking about that yesterday. It’s a veteran group, talented players. You see upward trajectory really in all their play. I don’t see anybody that’s falling off, or decreasing in their effort or their performance on the field. And then how they’re playing together as a group, all those things, we’re seeing good improvement and high level.”

What would be at the top of the second half checklist for that defense of things that need to be done by the defense, need to be accomplished? If you had a checklist for the defense for the second half of the season?

“You want to be good at everything. I don’t really have a checklist. The biggest thing is keeping the teams out of the end zone. Not allowing points. That’s a team goal, not just a defensive goal because other things factor into that, special teams, offense, field position. But, number one is keep the other team from scoring, as few points as possible. And also getting the ball back for the offense, whether it’s three-and-outs, drive stoppages at some point and turnovers.”

A few teams have been fined by the NFL for injury report violations. Are you just being careful this week listing everybody that could possibly be listed to comply to avoid those types of fines?

“Not that I’m aware of. This is strictly how we do it. It’s strictly done by the doctors and the trainers. The list is made up of doctors’ input and then ultimately by our trainer [director of football operations and sports medicine] Jeff Ferguson. So, I absolve, I wash my hands of all list making. That’s strictly done by our doctors and trainer.”

Wednesday you said Friday is your best day as far as questions. Now that you’ve seen the tape and studied on the Rams, what are some of the things you’ve observed from them?

“A great team. We have a lot of respect for the Rams. We had two tough ball games with them last year. And you see a very aggressive, tough, hard-hitting team. Really, really good everywhere you look. Situational football, offense, defense, special teams. Really talented players and a good, well-coached team. Even understand even better how much of a challenge this will be this week.”

Were you surprised at all that they traded away the number two pick so that the Redskins could pick QB Robert Griffin III instead of them?

“Was I surprised?”

Yeah.

“No. I don’t really comment on that. That seems like it was a very good deal for both teams.”

49ers list season-high nine players on injury list. What’s going on?
