Culliver issues apologetic statement

Chris Culliver has issued a statement through the 49ers regarding his anti-gay comments Tuesday to radio host Artie Lange. Here is what Culliver stated: “The derogatory comments I made yesterday were a reflection of thoughts in my head, but they are not how I feel. “It has taken me seeing them in print to realize [...]

Hostler feels Alex’s pain

A lot of people are feeling a twinge of remorse for quarterback Alex Smith, who picked himself up off the NFL mat and was seemingly in position for a strong playoff run before a concussion allowed young Colin Kaepernick to take his job.

Most of the empathetic emotions are coming from San Francisco, but at least one person on the opposite sideline this Sunday is feeling Smith’s pain. Ravens wide receivers coach Jim Hostler was Smith’s first NFL quarterbacks coach, in 2005 and 2006. The next year, the 49ers promoted Hostler to offensive coordinator. The year after that, Hostler was briefly out of a job before new Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh hired him.

“I have a personal relationship with Alex, and things were going his direction, the direction they should have been going all along there,” Hostler said this morning. “… So it’s disappointing for him. I feel for him.”

Hostler notes that Smith had “a heck of a year” in his second season, when he passed for 2,890 yards and 16 touchdowns, and compiled a not-terrible passer rating of 74.8 on a team that wasn’t exactly loaded with firepower.

“The next year, injuries set him back,” Hostler said. “We didn’t have the same team around him. And then there’s business. There’s a lot of things that go into what makes these guys successful. It was nice to see Alex have some of that success. And it’s disappointing now that he doesn’t get a chance to fulfill it.”

Many of the 49ers fans who came to embrace Smith last season, as he led the team to its first playoff appearance in nearly a decade, were shocked at the development. They had written him off as an NFL bust. Hostler did not make that mistake.

“People who really know Alex would never do that,” he said. “He’s made up of the right stuff. He is exactly what we knew he was gonna be when we drafted him, and circumstances, along with injuries, have played a huge part in him not having the success we thought he would have.”

One more thing is currently playing a part in that process: Colin Kaepernick.

49ers respond to Culliver’s homophobic comments

Chris Culliver made homophobic comments on the Artie Lange show Tuesday. This is what Culliver said.

Q: Have any gay guys approached you?

CULLIVER: I don’t do the gay guys. I don’t do that.

Q: Are there any gay guys on the 49ers?

CULLIVER: We don’t got no gay people on the team. They’ve got to get up out of here if they do. Can’t be with that sweet stuff.

Q: Is that true?

CULLIVER: Yeah.

Q: But they might be able to play well.

CULLIVER: Nah. Can’t be in the locker room…nah. You’ve got to come out ten years later after that.

Here is the 49ers’ response to Culliver’s comments: “The San Francisco 49ers reject the comments that were made yesterday, and have addressed the matter with Chris.  There is no place for discrimination within our organization at any level. We have and always will proudly support the LGBT community.”

Update: The 49ers just released this statement from Culliver: ”The derogatory comments I made yesterday were a reflection of thoughts in my head, but they are not how I feel. It has taken me seeing them in print to realize that they are hurtful and ugly. Those discriminating feelings are truly not in my heart. Further, I apologize to those who I have hurt and offended, and I pledge to learn and grow from this experience.”

Welcome to the ‘Jack and Jackie Harbaugh Show’ where we learn more on Kaepernick, family tree

When Patrick Willis went off on a substitute teacher

By PHIL BARBER

With (at least) two great inside linebackers in the Super Bowl, both wearing the same jersey number, everyone has been asking Patrick Willis if he chose No. 52 to honor Ray Lewis.

Willis’ answer has been consistent. Given a few options when drafted by the 49ers in 2007 – and none of them being No. 49, the jersey he wore at Ole Miss – he simply liked 52 best.

“I’m an even-number guy,” Willis explained Wednesday. “Not only am I an even-number guy, but 52 just looked so much better on me, I felt like, than them other numbers would.”

That said, he knew Lewis wore No. 52, and was happy to make the connection to a man who was, at that time, an eight-time Pro Bowl selection and one-time Super Bowl MVP.

“What a number to wear, and what a number to uphold your play,” Willis reflected. “Like, hey, kid, there’s another guy that wore this number that’s a good football player, so you can’t get this number, man, and not represent.”

All of this has been repeated a few times lately. But during a media session at the 49ers’ hotel, the New Orleans Marriott, this morning, Willis segued into a fantastic little story about the jersey he wore at Central High School in Bruceton, Tenn.

Take it away, Patrick:

“I remember I was in high school, and a kid had No. 42 before I got to high school. And I’ll never forget, his mom was a substitute teacher. I was in eighth grade, and he was a senior. So when I got to be in ninth grade, his mom’s a substitute teacher, he graduated now and I get the No. 42.

“He was a good football player. He was. He was a tight end. But his mom, every Friday in class, she’d be like, ‘Oh, my baby.’ I’m wearing the jersey, I’m wearing No. 42. I’m a respectable person. I am. And I’m even more respectable if you respect me back at the same time. And she’d be in class, and she’d be like, ‘Oh, my baby wore that jersey. He was a good football player. Nobody ever could wear the number like he wore it.’ Just kept saying all this stuff.

“And all of a sudden one day I just – my dad always told me to respect my elders. But I just got in front of the class, and I said, ‘You know what, Ms. Gold?’ Her name was Ms. Gold. I said, ‘This was your son’s number. But it’s not his number anymore, it’s my number. I just want to say I promise you before I leave high school, nobody will ever know that he wore this number before I did. This number will be known as my number.’

“And here we are, 10 years later, and that number’s retired now. So now when people think about that number, that number will be Patrick Willis’ number. It won’t be who had it before me.”

That’s about as close as you’ll come to hearing Pat Willis boast. Clearly, that substitute teacher struck a nerve that stung the young football star.

Willis went on to make it clear that he isn’t trying to lodge Lewis from the No. 52 pedestal. A 52 Ravens jersey will always mean Ray Lewis. He just wants to ensure that a 52 Niners jersey will always mean Patrick Willis.

Desire to share Super Bowl feeling drives 49ers’ Goodwin

‘Thank God for Ginn’

By PHIL BARBER

I learned something about 49ers safety Donte Whitner at Media Day that many of you probably knew already. He has a tattoo on his right forearm that reads “Thank God for Ginn.”

When Whitner first mentioned it to a reporter, I thought he was kidding, poking some fun at teammate Ted Ginn Jr. But he showed off the ink from his seat on the dais, and it’s real, a testament not to the 49ers punt returner, but to Ted Ginn Sr., who coached Whitner and Ginn Jr. on the same team at Glenville High School in Cleveland.

Ginn Sr., a legendary prep coach and community activist, has survived a most difficult year. He spent nearly 60 days in a hospital after doctors removed a tumor on his pancreas. Some of his closest friends thought he was going to die, but he made a strong recovery and is expected to be in New Orleans for the game Sunday.

Tattoos have been a popular subject here, thanks to the 49ers’ Colin Kaepernick, possibly the most illustrated quarterback in NFL history. Whitner, who has voluminous tattoos, thought Kaepernick had the most on the team, but Kap conceded that tight end Vernon Davis is the team’s current tat champ.

“Maybe he got another one last weekend,” Whitner said of Davis.

Shannon Sharpe blasts Randy Moss

By BOB PADECKY

As reported on this blog earlier, 49ers wide receiver Randy Moss said Tuesday during Super Bowl Media Day that he is the greatest wide receiver of all time.

Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe, now an analyst, is working the Super Bowl for CBS. His reaction to Moss’ statement bordered on outrage.

“Moss is out of his mind,” Sharpe said. “I mean you can debate every position in the NFL as to who’s better, but the only position you can’t debate is wide receiver. It’s Jerry Rice. It’s not even close.

“And think of this: Jerry put up his numbers when it was a run-first league. If Jerry played now, and played his entire career with these new defensive rules, Jerry would have had 250 touchdowns, 30,000 yards and 2000 receptions.”

For the record, Rice finished his Hall of Fame career with 197 touchdowns, 22,895 yards and 1,549 receptions.

Marshall Faulk on Randy Moss’ claim: ‘What was he supposed to say?’

NEW ORLEANS – So Randy Moss said he’s the greatest wide receiver of all-time today at Super Bowl Media Day. Marshall Faulk’s reaction: And?

Moss: “I’m the greatest receiver to ever play this game”

It’s been a pretty quiet morning at Super Bowl Media Day, but 49ers wide receiver Randy Moss gave the crowd something to talk about when he declared himself the greatest wide receiver of all time. “Now that I’m older, I do think I’m the greatest receiver to ever do it,” Moss said. “I don’t think [...]

Brooks shares memories of taking father’s Super Bowl ring to first-grade show-and-tell

Ahmad Brooks never asked his dad what it was like to play in a Super Bowl. Nor can he now. “I just looked at him as dad, and not as a football player,” said Brooks, who’ll start at left outside linebacker for the 49ers in Sunday’s Super Bowl XLVII. Perry Brooks, a defensive tackle on [...]

Donatell says 49ers assistants ‘not in any hurry to get out of here’

Coach Jim Harbaugh was in entertaining form Monday at the 49ers hotel, and answered questions for more than 18 minutes at his daily press conference at Super Bowl XLVII.

Harbaugh says a lot in just one word

By BOB PADECKY

NEW ORLEANS — At Monday’s Super Bowl press conference, the 49ers coach was asked a question from a reporter who obviously had known Harbaugh a long time.

“Do you still hold onto negative things as much now as when you were a player?”

Harbaugh was a quarterback at Michigan and then played the position for 15 years in the NFL.

Harbaugh didn’t answer immediately. You could see the wheels turning and he was actually working hard on answering the question truthfully.

Finally, he did.

“Possibly,” Harbaugh said.

Usually, he’ll give you or two or three sentences that won’t reveal much, and here was one word that revealed so much.

If ever a “possibly” could be interpreted as a yes, this was it.
