How the Vikings used Percy Harvin against the 49ers
The 49ers will face Percy Harvin at least two times next season. Can they match up with him?
They couldn’t last season when he was on the Vikings. Harvin caught nine passes for 89 yards and he ran once for nine yards. A couple of his catches were screens and a couple were swing passes out of the backfield.
I want to show you three plays in which Harvin beat the 49ers’ cornerbacks on routes past the line of scrimmage.
4:43 1st quarter, second and ten at the Minnesota 20 yard line
The Vikings line up in 11 personnel – one running back, one tight end and three wide receivers. Harvin is the slot receiver on the left side, the weak side of the formation. He’s lined up against Carlos Rogers.
Ponder is under center and before he calls hike, Donte Whitner runs toward the line of scrimmage to be the eighth man in the box, and Dashon Goldson slides to the center of the field to play single-high coverage. Ponder audibles, turning and yelling and gesturing to Harvin.
Ponder calls hike. Harvin takes three steps to the inside and then cuts back to the outside, juking Rogers. Ponder drops five step, hitches and floats a pass over Harvin’s shoulder. Gain of 24. Easy.
Once Rogers got beat, which was right away, he wasn’t fast enough to catch up to Harvin. Goldson was 15 yards away when Harvin caught the ball.
8:10 4th quarter, first and ten at the Minnesota 25 yard line
The Vikes line up in 12 personnel – Adrian Peterson alone in the backfield, two tight ends on the offense’s left side and two wide receivers on their right side. Harvin is one of the receivers. He’s in the slot.
Tarell Brown runs across the field to match up with Harvin. The ball is snapped. Ponder play fakes to Adrian Peterson, who’s running around the left end behind the tight ends. Ponder boots back the right.
Meanwhile, Harvin is wide open. He had run to the inside, stopped on a dime and sprinted back outside, faking out Brown. Ponder throws to the wide open receiver and misses low and away. Incomplete.
3:49 4th quarter, third and five at the San Francisco’s 49 yard line
The Vikes line up in 11 personnel, but this time Harvin is not in the slot. He’s the weakside X receiver. The tight end, slot and flanker all are on the offense’s right side.
Again, he faces Brown. This time Brown shows press coverage. Ponder audibles, motioning to Harvin. Then he calls hike.
Brown does not press. He bails, expecting Harvin to run deep. But Harvin runs a quick slant to the inside and gains fourteen.
What do you think, can the 49ers match up with Harvin or can’t they?

Hello, Dahl? What led the 49ers to former Rams safety
Asomugha, 49ers haven’t had ‘serious’ discussions; he’ll reportedly visit Saints next
Dahl on the 49ers: “They told me there was an opportunity to play in the voided safety position. I’m hoping to fill that void.”
49ers’ free safety Craig Dahl spoke to Bay Area reporters on a conference call Saturday afternoon. Here’s a transcript.
Q: Have the 49ers told you what position you’ll be playing, whether you’ll be competing for a starting job, that kind of thing?
DAHL: They told me that there was an opportunity to play in the voided safety position in the secondary. I’m hoping to come in here and mesh well with the secondary and fill that void.
Q: How familiar are you with Russell Wilson and these young quarterbacks?
DAHL: It helps me out that I was able to play against most of what we have in the NFC West last year. The emergence of Russell Wilson poses a big threat up in Seattle. Obviously with Kaepernick leading the reigns down here, he’ll do good things for our offense in the future.
Q: What do you think you do best as a safety?
DAHL: I think I can definitely get everyone on the same page. I’ll pick up this defense really quick. I’ve already had discussions with my position coaches and we’ve gone over a few things with the roles of each safety position on this defense. I don’t think I’ll have a problem getting to know the guys and working hard and them seeing me put the work in that I do, gaining their trust and confidence in my ability. Just keeping the unit meshed together is a big thing.
Q: Trent Baalke coached at North Dakota St. Did you know that?
DAHL: I did not. I had heard of him, but I had never met him before.
Q: Did you meet with Trent this week?
DAHL: Yes, Trent and I had some talks, discussed different things about North Dakota St. and that community. We had a lot more talks about what this program is doing and where his direction was with this program and how he saw the fit with me involved in it.
Q: Did you like what you saw from Ed Donatell?
DAHL: Yeah, definitely. We watched film together. We talked about different things. He told me what his coaching style is and how he helps out the players through their learning process. It was kind of a mutual discussion. We were both learning from each other.
Q: Did the 49ers mention to you signing Charles Woodson or another safety to compete with you?
DAHL: I had asked them that question and what other safeties they had brought in. I was doing my due diligence as well. They said they had brought in some other guys, but they were very select in what they had envisioned fitting their mold here in San Francisco.
Q: Were you told they wouldn’t be signing anyone else at the position?
DAHL: I’m always open for competition. I know how the game progresses. The team that’s always progressing is the team that’s bringing is guys to compete for positions. Whether I’m lined up out there from Day 1, it’s always going to be a competition to keep you job once you’re the starter. I’m grateful of the opportunity I was given and hope to be that guy.
Q: What role did you play on the Rams’ Special Teams the last few years?
DAHL: I played primarily on the punt team. It’s the same position Dashon did while he was in San Francisco – the personal protector on the punt team.

Manningham takes pay cut to avoid getting cut
Mario Manningham, who tore his ACL and PCL on December 23rd, just agreed to a $1.8 million pay cut in 2013 to stay with the 49ers.
He signed a two-year contract last offseason, and he was set to earn $3.6 million next season. But he probably will not be able to participate in training camp and he may not be ready to play when the season starts and who knows how good he’ll be when he returns. He is not worth $3.6 million to the 49ers this year.
Still, they want him, and this moves seems to indicate the 49ers hope Manningham can be their No.3 wide receiver and primary deep threat when the playoffs roll around. Do you think Manningham can be that guy?
Also, does this mean the 49ers will not draft a wide receiver? Should they still draft one? Why or why not?
