In the Tank: 49ers to get close look at FSU defensive lineman Carradine

The 49ers will attend the Saturday workout of Florida State defensive lineman Tank Carradine, a legitimate possibility for the team in the first round. Carradine was leading the Seminoles in…

NFL schedule: For openers, don’t count on prime-time date for 49ers

The NFL will release its regular-season schedule Thursday night and visions of a compelling Week 1 prime-time battle against the Seahawks, or the Falcons, or the Packers are dancing in the heads of 49ers’ fans. My advice: Lower your expectations.

Joe’s son scheduled to work out for 49ers

Nate Montana is scheduled to be among the players on the 49ers' practice fields Wednesday as part of the team's local pro day.

Peter King: “Jim Harbaugh has been at a high number of receiver workouts.”

In Peter King’s most recent article, he lets us know Jim Harbaugh has been at “a high number of receiver workouts” before this year’s draft. King cites an unnamed NFL G.M., who says this: ‘This isn’t about 2013 for the Niners. Harbaugh knows he’ll be there for a while. They just lost Randy Moss, and Anquan Boldin is there for a year, and they don’t know about A.J. Jenkins. Receiver’s very logical for them there.”

The 49ers have met with West Virginia’s Tavon Austin, Cal’s Keenan Allen, Louisiana Tech’s Quinton Patton and USC’s Robert Woods according to Walterfootball.

King speculates Tennessee’s Cordarrelle Patterson would fit well with the 49ers. To draft him, the 49ers probably would have to trade up to the 17th or 18th pick.

Do you think the 49ers will draft a wide receiver in the first round two years in a row? Why or why not?

CB Brock signs one-year tender with 49ers

Cornerback Tramaine Brock has signed the one-year contract he was tendered back in March, the 49ers announced Monday.

Offseason program up and running (and benching and lifting and stretching and rehabbing)

Some 2 ½ months after losing in the Super Bowl, the 49ers reconvened Monday for voluntary workouts as part of their nine-week offseason program. Players are restricted to strength and conditioning, as well as physical rehabilitation, over the next two weeks. Coaches are not allowed on the field for drills until the offseason program’s third [...]

49ers open preliminary talks with Iupati

After the 49ers extended Anthony Davis' contract through 2019, Mike Iupati became the next logical person in line for a lucrative deal.

Joe Montana tees off on TIger Woods’ rule controversy

Joe Montana, a relative newcomer to Twitter, needed way more than 140 characters to lash out at Saturday’s Masters controversy regarding Tiger Woods’ scorecard. Woods received a two-stroke penalty Saturday morning for an improper drop on the 15th hole of Friday’s second round. Rather than be disqualified or withdraw, Woods resumed his pursuit Saturday toward [...]

Walker redux? 49ers to host Cincinnati tight end Travis Kelce

The 49ers will be weekend hosts to Travis Kelce, perhaps the best blocking tight end in the upcoming draft. The younger brother of Eagles center Jason Kelce, Travis only recently…

Aldon? A.J.? Forecasting the 49ers’ next first-round surprise

On a national conference call this week, ESPN’s Mel Kiper said he thought the 49ers could take Florida International safety Jonathan Cyprien, UCLA defensive end Datone Jones, Florida safety Matt Elam, SMU defensive end Margus Hunt or Stanford tight end Zach Ertz with their first-round pick. This, naturally, means the Niners won’t take Cyprien, Jones, Elam, Hunt or Ertz with their first-round pick.

Steve Young, George Seifert join Santa Clara bid for Super Bowl

The Super Bowl-winning duo of Steve Young and George Seifert is joining the effort to bring Super Bowl 50 to the new Santa Clara Stadium.

Kaepernick’s college coach declines to tutor NFL teams

The running backs coach at Washington State, Mastro has had a message for NFL teams hoping to pick his brain on how to stop the read-option and quarterbacks such as Colin Kaepernick: get lost.

Rachal rejoins NFC West, signs with Cardinals

The 49ers effectively ended Chilo Rachal's career with the Bears last season. This year, they could face the former teammate more often.

Professor Saban: Hard to get read on 49ers’ read-option

The Packers trekked to Texas A&M. The Falcons traveled to Clemson. And, as Nick Saban revealed today, several other NFL teams have hoofed it to Alabama to study how to stop the read-option after it was used so effectively by teams such as the 49ers last year. Three months removed from his fourth national championship, [...]

One step ahead: Kaepernick working to improve speed this offseason

Davis’ deal includes weight requirements

Anthony Davis has serious incentives to maintain a svelte figure. The 49ers made it easy in his new extension: Stay fit and get paid.

Logical Extension: Iupati’s rare skills could make him next man up

Tellingly, Baalke recalled the precise date (Sept. 17, 2009) he made the trip to the University of Idaho to meet Iupati and watch five of his game tapes. Seven months after that visit, the 49ers made Iupati the No. 17 overall pick in the draft. A rare bird? Iupati is one of three guards taken with a top-20 pick since 2002.

49ers $1.7 million under salary cap

San Francisco is under the salary cap, but with a bevy of young players in need of contracts, the 49ers will be judicious with their next investments.

The 49ers defensive tackle is “well ahead of schedule” in his rehab after he sustained a partial tear of his ACL and PCL in a Dec. 9 game against the Dolphins, according to his agent, Wesley Spencer. Given his progress, Dobbs is expected to be ready for training camp, but the exact timetable for his return is uncertain, Spencer said.

Anthony Davis takes shot at former coach

49ers tackle Anthony Davis took a shot at his former Rugters coach Greg Schiano one day after signing a contract extension.

LB Gooden tweets out retirement plan amid free-agency tour

Tavares Gooden, a key member of the 49ers’ special teams since 2011, indicated on Twitter that his five-year career may be coming to an end. But that’s not an official statement, his agent said. Gooden is an unrestricted free agent, and he reportedly had visits this week with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals. Another [...]

Q&A with Asomugha

I caught up with the newest 49er, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, today as he escorted 20 high school students on a tour of the Cal campus as part of his annual event through his foundation. Here is what he had to say in an exclusive interview with the Bay Area News Group: Q: What does it [...]

Winning Time: Asomugha’s postseason streak likely to end with 49ers

In 14 seasons in the NFL and college, Asomugha has never been to the postseason. In his four seasons at Cal, the Bears went 15-30 and didn’t play in a bowl game. In 10 seasons in the NFL, his teams have never had a winning season.

The deal first was reported by ESPN. The 49ers have not confirmed the signing. Asomugha could not be reached for comment, though he currenty is in the Bay Area working [...]

McCoy: ‘It’s good to get a new fresh start’

Quarterback Colt McCoy, traded from the Browns to the 49ers Monday, spoke with Bay Area reporters about his departure from Cleveland and his goals in San Francisco.

In Harbaugh he trusts: Asomugha has background with 49ers coach

If Nnamdi Asomugha joined the 49ers, the cornerback is confident Jim Harbaugh and his staff would utilize his strengths and put him in a position to succeed. This, according…

Colt McCoy, the new Alex Smith?

The 49ers addressed an offseason need by adding Colt McCoy Monday, a quarterback who bears more than one resemblance to Alex Smith.

49ers trade for backup QB Colt McCoy

The Browns reportedly have traded quarterback Colt McCoy and a sixth round pick to the 49ers for a fifth and seventh round pick.

McCoy started 13 games for the Browns in 2011, a horrible team, and won four. He completed 57.2 percent of his passes and averaged 5.9 yards per attempt. He threw 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

In 2008 at the University of Texas, McCoy’s junior season, he completed 76.7 percent of his passes, averaged 8.9 yards per attempt, threw for 34 TDs and 8 INTs.

McCoy presumably will take Alex Smith’s spot as Colin Kaepernick’s backup. Do you like this acquisition?

Report: Hunter ready for training camp

It's been four months since Kendall Hunter tore his Achilles tendon, and he may be on track to start the season.

LSU CB Mathieu will visit 49ers

Due to his off-the-field issues, Mathieu will rack up some serious pre-draft frequent-flyer miles as teams will attempt to discern if he’s learned from his mistakes: Mathieu will also visit the Seahawks, Cardinals, Patriots, Falcons, Texans, Vikings, Buccaneers, Bills and Bengals, NFL.com reported.

Crabtree couldn’t see moments before final offensive play of Super Bowl
