Daniels dazzles, 49ers lead 15-13

While backups Scott Tolzien and Colt McCoy struggled, rookie, 7th-round pick B.J. Daniels finally scored the 49ers’ first touchdown in their 8th preseason quarter. Not even Colin Kaepernick could do that. Daniels in the first drive of his pro career, completed 6 of 9 passes for 72 yards and a pretty 14-yard touchdown pass to [...]

49ers to watch in Friday’s preseason game against the Chiefs

Training camp officially ends with this game. When the 49ers return to Santa Clara, practices will be closed and the team will settle into a weekly routine that will take it through the season.

A late bloomer? A.J. Jenkins, then and now

For those seeking a silver lining in the A.J. Jenkins saga, there is this: He wasn’t very good during the early part of his college career, either.

Three Keys To The Rest Of The Preseason [EXCLUSIVE]

Jenkins not feeling added pressure to perform in second preseason game

A.J. Jenkins said he’s feeling no pressure as the 49ers wide receiver prepares for the team’s second preseason game. Jenkins had a rough preseason opener, which followed last year’s rookie campaign in which the first-round pick appeared in only three games and didn’t have a catch. Last week against Denver, two of the three passes [...]

Competition for backup job places Tolzien under the pistol

Scott Tolzien is in his third full NFL camp, this time competing with Colt McCoy for the most prominent backup role on the 49ers.

49ers DT Dobbs on his one-game suspension: “I agree with it”

After practice Wednesday, Dobbs, 25, said he learned of his suspension last month. He will forfeit $32,647 of his $555,000 base salary.

Training camp report: Another big practice for Collie, Gray

SANTA CLARA – Here’s what stood out to me during Thursday evening’s light, non-padded practice.

THE GOOD

1. MarQueis Gray – He had a monster practice for the second day in a row. Today, he caught five passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns. He hasn’t dropped a pass all week. He may earn a spot on the 53-man roster.

2. Vernon Davis – He caught five passes for 70 yards despite receiving roughly half of the reps Gray received.

3. Garrett Celek – He caught two passes today, and one was a touchdown during a red zone drill. Celek ran to the back of the end zone and cut in to the left. Colin Kaepernick fired a pass between two defenders, Michael Thomas and Nate Stupar, and Celek caught it.

4. Anquan Boldin – He was the starting flanker. He caught two passes for 20 yards.

5. Marlon Moore – He was the starting split end. He caught two passes for 15 yards.

6. Austin Collie – He caught a team-high seven passes for 50 yards and a touchdown.

7. A.J. Jenkins – Like yesterday, Jenkins caught two passes. First, he beat Carlos Rogers on a quick out route for five yards. Later, Jenkins made the best catch I’ve seen him make. He ran a fade down the left sideline against Tarell Brown. Colt McCoy threw a back shoulder fade to Jenkins, and he threw it high enough where Brown couldn’t reach it. Jenkins slowed down, jumped up, caught the ball and got both feet in bounds. Brown never turned his head to find the ball. Finally, Jenkins ran a quick slant against Marcus Cooper. Cooper read the route and knocked the pass away.

8. Kyle Williams – He made just one catch, but it was beautiful. He ran a fade down the right sideline against Marcus Cooper. Kaepernick threw a back shoulder fade, and in one graceful move Williams jumped, twisted and caught it. It looked he was dancing.

9. Chuck Jacobs – Like Williams, Jacobs made only one catch, but his was the catch of the day. From the eight-yard line in the red zone, Jacobs ran a quick fade to the back right corner of the end zone. B.J. Daniels threw it up. Jacobs tipped it to himself and caught the ball as he tumbled to the ground.

10. Kassim Osgood – Like Williams and Jacobs, Osgood caught just one pass, but Osgood’s was a touchdown. Osgood beat Tramaine Brock on a quick slant for the TD.

11. Chad Hall – He caught a TD pass over Donte Whitner in a one-minute drill. With 10 seconds left, McCoy threw a 30-yard prayer to Hall in the back of the end zone. Whitner had perfect coverage, but Hall jumped and snatched the ball from in front of Whitner’s face.

12. Eric Reid – He got matched up one-on-one with Austin Collie in the slot. Collie ran a quick out route, Reid read it and knocked the pass away. He looked like a cornerback on that play.

13. Tramaine Brock – Yes, he gave up a touchdown to Osgood, but Brock broke up two other touchdown passes. First, he knocked away a pass to Frank Gore on a wheel route. Next, Brock knocked away a pass to Osgood on a back-corner fade.

14. B.J. Daniels – He was on fire in the red zone. During one stretch, he threw three-straight touchdowns, one to Collie, one to Jacobs and one to Lavelle Hawkins.

15. Joe Staley – He participated in practice for the first time this week.

THE NOT-SO-GOOD

1. Donte Whitner – He thought Hall had stepped out of bounds before he caught the touchdown pass. After the play, Whitner spent about five minutes arguing about it on the sideline with the ball boy.

2. Nnamdi Asomugha – He’s extremely physical in practice, often grabbing receivers when he gets beat. Today, he grabbed Chuck Jacobs, who blew by him on a corner route. In a game, the referees would have called defensive pass interference.

3. Vance McDonald – He did not practice all week.

Reuniting with Alex Smith on a remote, Missouri campus

Wearing the same buzz cut and close-cropped beard from his 49ers days, Alex Smith looked happy. He’s a starting quarterback again. End of story. Actually, it’s just the beginning of a new chapter, one with the Chiefs. Two days before the Chiefs host the 49ers in an exhibition, Smith sat down for an interview at [...]

Harbaugh takes revealing look at Kap’s 2012 goals

Jim Harbaugh collects individual goals before each season. Colin Kaepernick's to-do list last year read like one of Nostradamus' prophesies.

Alex Smith Q&A: Harbaugh helped 49ers career end without regret

Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith recently told the New York Times he and Kansas City coach Andy Reid would “love to stick to everybody who thought we couldn’t do it.” Would some of Smith’s doubters be on the opposite sideline when the Chiefs host the 49ers on Friday night?

Kaepernick on B.J. Daniels: “He has the ability to make big plays and keep plays alive.”

SANTA CLARA – Colin Kaepernick spoke in the 49ers’ media tent Wednesday afternoon. Here’s what he said.

Q: Everyone has a mentor in this league. What did Alex Smith mean to you?

KAEPERNICK: He did a lot for me. Alex is someone who really helped me pick up the playbook, understand what we’re trying to get done and how we wanted to do it. I wouldn’t be as far along as I am right now without him.

Q: What about personally?

KAEPERNICK: He’s a great guy. He’s a class act. I have nothing bad to say about him. He’s always helped me. He’s always put the team first. He’s a great all-around guy.

Q: Do you give B.J. Daniels tips the way Alex Smith gave you tips along the way?

KAEPERNICK: Yeah. I try to help him in any way that I can. Any chance I have to try to show him something or tell him to look at defenses a little differently, I do. I told him if he has any questions, just ask me. Don’t be afraid.

Q: Are you curious to see what he can do in a game?

KAEPERNICK: Yeah, I think he has the ability to make big plays. He has the ability to keep plays alive. I’m curious to see what he’s going to do when he gets on that field and gets the opportunity.

Q: What do you remember about Camp Alex?

KAEPERNICK: It was just going over the playbook, trying to figure it out. Everybody was trying to figure it out together. We didn’t have any coaches. We were all working on that together.

Q: Harbaugh mentioned your goals list from last season. Are you willing to share what was on that list? Were they handwritten notes? What was that process?

KAEPERNICK: Hand written notes in a little booklet he gave us, but I’m going to keep my goals to myself.

Q: Do you agree that you did a lot of what you wanted to do last year?

KAEPERNICK: Everything except part of No.3.

Q: Was No.3 win the Super Bowl?

KAEPERNICK: It was.

Q: You’ve had a lot of opportunities this offseason to do a lot of projects off the field. How were those presented to you, or were they things you actively sought out?

KAEPERNICK: Everything is either done by my agent or brought to me by our P.R. staff.

Q: How were those experiences for you? Were they everything you expected?

KAEPERNICK: Great experiences. I had a lot of fun, but we’re focusing on football now.

Q: You like to critique yourself on the football field. Now that you’re seen your body of work at the photo shoots and the commercials can you critique yourself on how you think you did?

KAEPERNICK: I’m not worried about that. I’m more worried about what we’re doing out here.

Q: You were on the cover of GQ this month. How do you feel about that?

KAEPERNICK: It’s a great honor. I was very excited about it.

49ers expectation for Dorsey: Keep doing what he’s doing

Glenn Dorsey was the No. 5 overall pick in 2008, and while many consider him a bust, the 49ers want him to be the kind of player he was with K.C.

49ers running back Frank Gore has a formula for success

By any measure, 49ers running back Frank Gore has been enormously successful. Gore would be part of the 49ers’ Mount Rushmore during the era of 49ers history in which he has played. What’s notable about the 30-year-old Gore as he enters his eighth season as a still-productive-running-back is how much he hasn’t changed over his [...]

Training camp D15: Rare fight breaks out; Jenkins has solid session

Training-camp fights are commonplace in the NFL, but they’ve been rare in Santa Clara since Jim Harbaugh took over. The 49ers had their first of the 2013 session today,…

Fast times: Speed could keep undrafted CB Morris with 49ers

On Monday, tight end Vernon Davis said wide receiver A.J. Jenkins was one of the three fastest players on the team. So who are the other two speedsters?

Fangio on Eric Reid: “I thought he played pretty decent in the game last Thursday.”

SANTA CLARA — Vic Fangio spoke in the media tent Tuesday afternoon. Here’s what he said, courtesy of the 49ers.

Can you give us an update on where things stand with S Eric Reid and how he’s been looking in this last week?

“He’s been doing well. I thought he played pretty decent in the game last Thursday. And then, he basically didn’t practice on Saturday and Sunday, had a little physical issue, and then practiced more yesterday. So, I thought he played well in the game, showed progress, showed promise and then he kind of had a slow week here with a little injury.”

He had a couple of big hits in that game. Where do you stand on that type of play? Does he have to worry about being too aggressive sometimes in going for that big hit too often?

“Well, we love the big hit and coach it, and try and get it at any time we can get it. He’s just got to be smarter there. He’s got to know not to hit after the whistle. He’s got to know not to hit a guy in the head, a receiver, defenseless receiver. He didn’t really have any of those plays the other day. So, we’re going to be as aggressive as we can and as physical as we can within the rules.”

Do you expect him to play with the first unit on Friday?

“I haven’t decided that yet.”

S Donte Whitner talked a lot about communication with the other safety, how has he been progressing in that regard?

“He’s been doing well in that regard. Yesterday he had a couple mental errors in that regard, which were a surprise. He hadn’t been doing that, which is good to see from our standpoint as you start feeling comfortable and you think he has it and understands it. He didn’t yesterday in practice. So, we got to get a bunch of that stuff rectified.”

Was that stuff that he should have known, or stuff that he had made mistakes on before?

“Stuff he should’ve known. We hadn’t repped it as much lately. So, as always with younger guys, you can’t assume they have it if you haven’t repped it every day.”

How does he respond whenever he makes a mistake?

“Good. He’s very critical, self-critical of himself. He takes coaching. I think all the intangibles with him from an intelligence, work ethic, coachability, will be good for him. He’s going to be fine in those areas.”

I think Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has said he expects his starters to play a little bit more in this second game than they did in the first. Will that be the same with you guys as well?

“We haven’t decided. If it is, it won’t be much more.”

Have you ever known a player to experience a sophomore slump and if so, what contributes to that?

“Sophomore slump. I can’t recall anybody right now that I directly was involved with. It happens occasionally because guys had a good first season and they think the game is easy. They don’t work as hard in the offseason. Think they got it made. In this game you’ll get humbled very quickly both as a player and a coach. It’s just complacency setting in.”

Something that I’ve heard regarding especially quarterbacks and skill position players is, once defensive coaches have a whole offseason to study them and look at tape that maybe they can throw some sort of a changeup at them or something to throw them off. Is that a real thing that goes on?

“Well, obviously anytime an offense is having success with a certain scheme or a particular player and you know you have to play them in the coming season, you’re going to study it and try and figure out a way to somehow neutralize it within your own scheme. So, yes that does go on.”

Do you know anything about DT Tank Carradine yet?

“No.”

Have you thought ahead to how he might fit in, what you need to see from him when he gets on the field?

“No. Basically, somebody asked me the other day if I was disappointed in the way it’s going with Tank and [DT] Quinton [Dial]. I said no, the only time you get disappointed is when you’re expecting something to happen or you’re hoping something happens. When we drafted those two guys, this was the picture that was painted. So, we’re not surprised that they haven’t hit the field yet. It doesn’t look like they’ll hit it real soon either. That was what was expected when we drafted them, much like [RB Marcus] Lattimore, the running back. Not to his extent, but, that was the picture that was painted.”

Would you expect both those guys to start the season on that list?

“That’s a real possibility. But, I don’t think that’s been decided yet.”

What do you think about DL Lawrence Okoye’s performance in his preseason game?

“He did OK. We got him six snaps in there, and he did OK. For a guy that’s never played football in his life, he did OK. He’s growing inch by inch in his development. He’s nowhere near where he should be. Nowhere near where he hopes to be. Will he ever get there? Only time will tell. But, he is making slight improvements. And, in his case, slight is big.”

You talked a lot about interchangeability with your safeties. When Reid gets reps next to S C.J. Spillman, is that a big drastic difference for him as opposed to his responsibilities at free safety?

“No. He’s still playing free safety. He’s the one guy in this camp that has only played free safety. So, it shouldn’t matter who he’s with.”

What have you seen from LB Corey Lemonier in the short time you’ve worked with him?

“He’s done well. Corey is making the hard transition that a lot of guys from college have to do. He was a defensive end in college trying to transition to be an outside linebacker in a 3-4, much like [LB] Aldon [Smith] had to when he was a rookie. And, he’s progressed well. The difference between him and Aldon, at the same time, Aldon was in the lockout year and he didn’t have all the spring work that Corey’s gotten. So, from a know how and technique standpoint as an outside backer, he might be a little bit ahead of Aldon at the same stage. But, that’s because he had all the spring work and Aldon didn’t.”

CB Darryl Morris, cornerback, is undrafted. But, does he have any chance to stick around here in some capacity?

“He certainly does, and he’s picked it up this week in practice. He’s done a good job of covering. You may have seen the couple plays he’s made going against our offense on some deep balls. That’s always encouraging to see. The guy can really run. He’s fast, really fast. If you watch him this past game, and I’m sure if he’s on the kickoff team, he’s probably the first guy down. That’s because he’s really fast. He’s got something to work with and he’s progressing, getting better.”

I assume his size is one reason he wasn’t drafted?

“I would assume that. We didn’t do any work on him as far as from the coaching staff. The scouts did all the work on him and thought he would be a good undrafted free agent to get into camp, and they were right. He’s competing to make the team in some capacity.”

Let me ask you about another young cornerback, CB Marcus Cooper. How’s he looked?

“He’s doing fine. He’s learning the game better. Learning our system better, which is allowing him to make more plays. He’s got good size for a corner. Early in camp he wasn’t playing like a good-size corner because he was doing a lot of thinking. He’s still in that stage, but he’s doing less thinking. So, we’re pleased with his development so far.”

Are those two guys on opposite ends of the spectrum as far as cornerbacks, one’s big, one’s small, fast that sort of thing?

“Corners come in all sizes and shapes. It’s just whether they can cover. Some guys cover with speed and quickness, some guys cover with length, hopefully they have enough speed. [CB] Nnamdi’s [Asomugha] game is length and speed. Some guys are quick and fast, like [former Washington Redskins CB] Darrell Green in the past. They come in all sizes and shapes.”

You had a quick and fast guy in the slot a lot yesterday, CB Tarell Brown. How did he do in his first?

“He did fine. I think I told you last week we were going to play him there this week in camp, but he didn’t practice Saturday and Sunday and maybe even Monday. So, yesterday was his first day out there and we worked him in there. I thought he did well for his first day back, first day back coming off of an injury and his first day in at a new position. Some guys would have been a little leery of trying that, just wanting to get their feet underneath them from an injury. But, he went in there and I thought he did good and I think he can play in there if needed.”

C.J. Spillman is finally getting what he has been pushing for – a chance to play safety

When 49ers safety C.J. Spillman was plucked from the pool of undrafted players by the Chargers in 2009, he was thought of as a hard-tackling safety. But as a fringe player, Spillman quickly learned that excelling at special teams would keep him in the league. When San Diego released him in 2010, the 49ers claimed [...]

Marlon Moore, former Cowboys fan, looks for big role with 49ers

Marlon Moore jumped at the jump to sign with the 49ers this offseason, but it’s not because the Sacramento native grew up rooting for the red and gold. He wasn’t a Raiders fan either. He actually grew up a Cowboys fan. “I just went against my dad,” Moore said. “My dad was a Raiders fan. For some reason, I [...]

McDonald’s education includes tough exams vs. teammates

The early education of rookie tight end Vance McDonald has included some graduate-level courses led by professors Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks. The problem: The 49ers rookie tight end still only has an elementary-school degree in pass blocking.

All-Pro Iupati aims to get even better

The 49ers developed one of the league's best offensive lines a year ago. Mike Iupati was a major cog, and he's looking to improve.

It looked like it had the potential to change the script for A.J. Jenkins, who is badly in need of some positive momentum and confidence. The speedy wide receiver…

Training camp report: Jenkins shut out, Brown moves to nickelback

SANTA CLARA – Here’s what stood out to me during Monday afternoon’s padded practice.

THE GOOD

1. Tarell Brown – He returned to practice after missing the last two and was the starting nickelback in place of Carlos Rogers. Brown gave up just one catch while playing nickelback – a 15-yard completion to Austin Collie.

2. Aldon Smith –He sat out for an hour during the middle portion of team drills. The head trainer seemed to be checking his hand. But Aldon Smith still managed to rack up three sacks at the beginning and end of practice.

3. Marlon Moore – He was the starting split end and he caught three passes for 85 yards and two touchdowns. First, he caught a five-yard touchdown in front of Perrish Cox in a red zone drill. Next, Moore caught a 30-yard pass in front of Cox on a deep square in. Finally, Moore caught a 50-yard pass from Kaepernick over Marcus Cooper. Kaepernick under threw the pass, so Moore slowed down, adjusted to it and out jumped Cooper, who was in perfect position to intercept it.

4. Eric Reid – He was the starting free safety and during a red zone drill, he knocked away what would have been a touchdown to Vernon Davis on a post route.

5. Trenton Robinson – He played both safety positions for the scout team defense. On one play when he was at single-high free safety, B.J. Daniels uncorked a deep pass for Anquan Boldin. Robinson ran 30-yards across the field and knocked the pass away.

6. Ricardo Lockette – He beat Tarell Brown for a 25-yard TD catch on a post route. Later, he beat Marcus Cooper deep for a 30-yard catch down the sideline.

6. Corey Lemonier – He had two sacks during practice. He beat Adam Snyder and he beat Kenny Wiggins.

7. Lawrence Okoye – He batted down a pass at the line of scrimmage.

8. Anthony Dixon – At the end of practice he broke through the defensive line on a run up the middle. Trenton Robinson jogged down into the box to lightly tag Dixon and end the play, but Dixon caught Robinson with a forearm shiver and knocked the safety onto his back. Dixon was so fired up, he turned to the media on the sideline and barked at us. Harbaugh walked over to Dixon and admonished him in front of the team.

THE NOT-SO-GOOD

1. Joe Staley and Vance McDonald – They did not suit up or participate in practice.

2. Carlos Rogers – He suited up but did not participate in team drills.

3. A.J. Jenkins – He did not catch any passes today. He was targeted three times – once in the end zone and twice deep. In the end zone, he ran an in route and Nnamdi Asomugha knocked the pass away. On the deep ones, Jenkins faced Darryl Morris. The first time, Jenkins slowed down when he turned to find the ball in the air, so he never got a hand on it. It fell incomplete. Later, Jenkins again tried to beat Morris deep, but he couldn’t. Morris ran stride-for-stride with Jenkins and knocked the pass away.

4. Adam Snyder – He started at left tackle in place of Joe Staley and gave up three sacks.

5. Anthony Davis – He gave up a sack to Parys Haralson on third-and-9 during a situational drill.

6. Kendall Hunter – He dropped the one pass that was thrown to him. Hunter has looked rusty since he’s returned to the team.

Which WRs do you like? Vernon Davis changes answer

When Vernon Davis was asked two weeks ago which wide receivers have caught his eye in practice, he had a list of nominees. “I really like Chad (Hall),” he…

Practice notes: Brown returns; Jenkins blanked deep; Smiths looking solid

UPDATED After missing the past two practices for an undisclosed injury, cornerback Tarell Brown rejoined his teammates for Monday’s training-camp workout. Brown is the incumbent starter at right cornerback, which is where Nnamdi Asomugha lined up in his absence. – A.J. Jenkins failed to haul in at least three deep passes during practice, including two [...]

Bowman on Wilhoite: “He’s not too far from me and Pat.”

SANTA CLARA – NaVorro Bowman spoke in the media tent Monday afternoon. Here’s what he said.

Q: How much has Michael Wilhoite improved this offseason?

BOWMAN: He’s definitely a lot more focused. He understands that he has a chance to be the next guy up. I think that’s what he’s been waiting for. He’s definitely earned it with giving us everything he has on special teams. Now that he’s playing a lot within the four-down part of the game, he’s keyed in and trying to pick up the little things that me and Pat are honed in on. But he’s doing a great job and we still have a lot of football left to play and a lot of preseason games for him to get better. He’s doing a great job.

Q: You and Willis usually are the generals of the defense. With him out right now, what’s it like being a lone general?

BOWMAN: It’s OK. I look at myself as a leader. Any time Pat’s not in there or Cowboy’s not in there, I look at myself as the guy to get everybody on the same page and ready to go. You have to have a guy like that on your defense or the defense won’t be on the same page. We have a lot of guys like that on our defense. I think that’s what has made us successful in the past.

Q: You haven’t been able to hit Alex Smith in the past. What will that be like this Friday?

BOWMAN: There’s a first time for everything. You’re right. We never got a chance to hit him. This time we can, so we’re looking forward to it. I know Alex knows we’re coming. It’s just football. He’s on another team. We’ve got to go out there and play our game.

Q: Have you been most impressed with Wilhoite’s athleticism?

BOWMAN: He’s not too far from me and Pat. He has the ability to do the things we can do. He just has to get comfortable doing it and get the snaps and the reps. I think the coaches know that. That’s why he’s been sticking around here for so long. He just has to take every day as a chance to get better. I’m sure he’ll do that.

Q: In the meeting room, do you and Pat take it upon yourselves to make sure all of the rookies are understanding a point?

BOWMAN: All the time. In a player’s mind, sometimes hearing it from a coach is repetitive. It may not stick. But when you hear it from a player who’s out there in the fire, you kind of listen to it a little bit more. That’s the ability me and Pat have in our room. We’re able to coach with our coach and he doesn’t mind it.

Q: What’s the arrangement in the meeting room? How do you guys sit?

BOWMAN: Pat’s always sitting in the back by the coach and I’m always in the front leaning up against the board. The rookies are spread around. It’s a tight-knit group. No egos by the coach or any player. I think that’s the best thing about our room.

Q: With the new contact rules, are you going to have to make some adjustments on how you approach games?

BOWMAN: The new rule outside the box is kind of head boggling because on the defensive side you want to protect yourself at the same time. I’m not understanding the rule where the running back can’t lower his head outside the box. That tends to happen when you’re trying to get a first down or something like that. It’s going to be a rule that’s going to have to be played with, but if you want to play in this league you’ve got to abide by the rules. The referees have a tough job. Us as players, we just have to go out there and figure out a way to fit our game into the new way of playing in the NFL.

Q: Is football a better game this way or not?

BOWMAN: There’s no CBA when you’re growing up learning about football. You learn how to hit and at a young age, coaches try to figure out if you have that dog in you, if you have that anger in you. I don’t think from that level to this level they’re on the same page. When you’re young, you’re just trying to find yourself and that tends to carry itself over into this league, and that’s the football we’ve been used to playing. It’s hard-nosed football, hitting, wrapping, getting a man down any way we can. I don’t know why the NFL doesn’t want us to play like that anymore. Safety is the answer, but football is a contact sport.

Q: You mentioned that dog, that anger. Can you see any of that in Lawrence Okoye?

BOWMAN: I can’t even think about the first day I played football, so I can only imagine what he’s going through. So many things are moving fast out there, it’s kind of slowing him down. But a big guy like that, I know he has it in him. You can’t be that big without. He just has to find out the right time to use it.

Q: How did it affect the defense not having Parys Haralson last year, and what does it mean to get him back?

BOWMAN: It allowed Aldon to play the run a lot more. It allowed us to get better at that position with Aldon playing the whole season. Now that we have Parys, we’re a lot stronger at the outside linebacker position I believe.

Q: How are things going with Ian Williams and Glenn Dorsey?

BOWMAN: Impressive. They’re doing a great job. Those guys coming into this defense and learning how we play, it’s tough on them, but Ian’s been here for a while. He’s learned and had a chance to watch past film, past nose guards. He’s definitely taken off and is excelling at that position and Glenn is doing the same thing. Me and Pat are excited about it because we believe both of them can play.

Deep thoughts: Lockette feels ready to climb up depth chart

Ricardo Lockette believes his speed literally can separate him from the 49ers’ pack of wide receiver hopefuls. “Without a doubt,” Lockette said Monday. “All of us work hard and all of us have speed. But at the same time it’s a competition. “I wouldn’t be a competitor if I didn’t say I wasn’t the best [...]

TE Davis thrilled with Kaepernick’s progress, especially on deep passes

Vernon Davis attributed his chemistry with Alex Smith the past two seasons, in part, to sharing a hotel room at training camp. This camp, Davis doesn’t have a roommate, and he has a new starting quarterback in Colin Kaepernick. That Davis-Kaepernick rapport is growing stronger every day. “Colin has come a long way,” Davis said [...]

49ers Jim Tomsula talks about the defensive-line rotation

Ask about the fatigue of the 49ers’ defense and particularly, the defensive line at the end of last season, and you will get an argument out of defensive line coach Jim Tomsula. “First of all the idea that people were worn out at the end of the season, I’m not going for that. I’m not [...]

Colt McCoy (stinger) back as full participant at practice, Vance McDonald doesn’t suit up

Backup quarterback Colt McCoy was a full participant at practice a day after working in a limited fashion. He suffered a stinger against the Broncos. Tight end Vance McDonald did not practice. He was suited up at Saturday’s practice but did not participate. He’s believed to have a minor leg injury. Left tackle Joe Staley, [...]

Colin Kaepernick and Vernon Davis – unstoppable in practice

Practice Report -The Colin Kaepernick-Vernon Davis connection continues to dazzle. They hooked up on a pretty 40-yard touchdown pass down the middle. Kaepernick, who is sometimes criticized for his lack of touch, dropped a beautiful pass into Davis between Carlos Rogers and Craig Dahl on another play. Rookie Vance McDonald did not practice, after hardly [...]

Collie will get more chances to prove himself — all over again

Although he is behind other 49ers WRs when it comes to knowing the playbook and system, Austin Collie does have an important advantage.

Fangio’s words don’t hurt Asomugha: ‘My confidence is in a good place’

Sticks and stones may break his bones, but lukewarm performance reviews won’t hurt Nnamdi Asomugha. A week after 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said it’s unclear if the 32-year-old cornerback has “enough gas left in his tank,” Asomugha was asked about his coach’s so-so assessment.

Perrish Cox could make a significant impact to the 49ers this year

Even with the season-ending knee injury to Chris Culliver, the competition for the third cornerback spot is acute. Nnamdi Asomugha, Tramaine Brock and Perrish Cox all played well as the fifth defensive back against Denver in the 49ers’ 10-6 preseason-opening loss. Cox stood out the most. He jumped a pair of routes and knocked the [...]

49ers camp report: ‘Raggedy’ practice at Fan Fest

The 49ers had all kinds of problems during Saturday's practice, perhaps made worse by the more than 10,000 fans that were watching.

He’s back: RB Hunter activated from PUP list

Hunter, who had 371 yards and averaged 5.2 yards a carry in 11 games last year, will re-join an active roster that includes running backs Frank Gore, 2012 second-round pick LaMichael James and Anthony Dixon.

Looking at the man in the middle: NT Williams impressive vs. Broncos

Since Ian Williams is a former undrafted free agent with 39 snaps in two seasons, it seemed prudent to take a wait-and-see approach when the hype machine seemed to rev up a bit during training camp.

Film review: Okoye’s debut, no snaps for Daniels at QB

Matt Maiocco's 49ers film review: British Olympian Lawrence Okoye officially a football player; Perrish Cox excels in double duty.

Film review: Wilhoite, Cox shine; a closer look at Jenkins’ night

Here are some thoughts and observations after re-watching last night’s 49ers-Broncos game: There’s been a lot of chatter about how Vernon Davis will be used more as a wideout…

49ers notes: First-round pick Reid, LB Wilhoite stand out

First-round pick Eric Reid ranked second on the team with six tackles, and his first stop was the most memorable. Reid raced up from his safety position and walloped tight end Virgil Green after a 13-yard gain in the second quarter of the 49ers' 10-6 loss to Denver on Thursday night.

49ers-Broncos rewind: WR competition heats up

Several 49ers WRs Thursday did nothing to hurt their chances of joining Anquan Boldin in the starting lineup. A.J. Jenkins wasn't one of them.

McCoy injured, Jenkins struggles in 49ers’ preseason loss

Well, Colin Kaepernick sure looked good. The 49ers’ offense went from crisp to near-comical after their dynamic starting quarterback directed a game-opening, 13-play scoring drive in their 10-6 loss to the Broncos on Thursday night in their preseason opener.

Aldon Smith pressures Manning, swaps jerseys with Miller

Aldon Smith, a fan of English soccer club Manchester United, took a page out of  the soccer playbook and exchanged jerseys with Denver Broncos counterpart Von Miller after Thursday’s exhibition opener. It was Smith’s first jersey swap, and it came at the suggestion of his close friend, Miller. “I don’t know if I’m into it yet,” [...]

Final: Starters fare well before 49ers backups key 10-6 defeat

For exhibition openers, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh came away “happy” with Thursday night’s one-series cameos of his starting units. Colin Kaepernick completed all four of his passes. Linemen blocked well for LaMichael James’ runs. Then the 49ers defense kept Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos from breaching midfield. But a cascade of turnovers (four) followed [...]

Here they go again: 49ers acquire CB Eric Wright

The 49ers have acquired cornerback Eric Wright … again. Twenty days after the Niners traded for the six-year veteran in a deal that was voided by Wright’s subsequent failed physical, they signed him today and placed him on the non-football injury/ilnness list.

49ers: Five things to watch against Denver

The 49ers kick off their preseason on Thursday night and they have several position battles that the coaches will be keeping an eye on.

Q&A: When will Mario Manningham be back?

@mattbarrows When will Manningham come back, and does he steal the #2 job back right away?— Tim Desrosiers (@MonsterGore) August 8, 2013 A: No one has said when exactly Mario…

Undrafted rookie D.J. Harper gets high praise

San Francisco fans are going to see a lot of D.J. Harper this preseason, but even with a great showing his NFL future could lie elsewhere.

Putting Jim Harbaugh’s comments on the 49ers quarterbacks in context

Context is important when talking about position battles. In the spring, coach Jim Harbaugh said that quarterback Colt McCoy was working in the No. 2 role since McCoy was signed with the 49ers. But on the eve of the 49ers’ first preseason game, competition at quarterback is wide open. When Harbaugh was asked about the competition [...]
