Harbaugh: “It was good to be in the fray. Got stepped on. Got cleated in the foot. And that felt good too.”

Jim Harbaugh spoke on KNBR from London on Tuesday. Here is a transcript.

Q: Where are you guys?

HARBAUGH: It’s a hotel. We’ve got a real nice football facility set up, field, weight room, locker rooms. We turned conference rooms into offices and meeting rooms. It’s very good. I would compare it to our setup in Youngstown or when were in New Orleans for the Super Bowl.

Q: How have the players adjusted so far?

HARBAUGH: They’ve been good. We flew out right after the game. It was a happy flight after the victory over the Titans. Then, got here. Some guys were experiencing different things. I’ve seen many of the guys walking around the hotel. Some have gone and seen their family in London. Andy Lee, Kevin McDermott, Phil Dawson and Colt McCoy were headed out for a round of golf today. So, different things that the guys are doing. They have the day off today.

Q: Is this your first trip on European soil?

HARBAUGH: I’ve been on European soil before but it’s a working business trip much like it was when we went to Youngstown. Coaches, Monday and Tuesday are game-planning days.

Q: What was the most satisfying part of the win? Was it the return of the read-option? Was it the special teams?

HARBAUGH: Both those things were really good. Multiple guys contributed. The play of the special teams was great. The play of the coverage units putting our offense in great field position, putting our defense in great field position.

Kaepernick had a great game. I thought it was maybe Frank Gore’s best game since I’ve been with him. The blocking, running, touchdowns, everything that he did was A++. I loved that.

Anquan Boldin had some huge catches. Defensively we played really good again. Like last week we gave up some big plays but I think we can keep improving in all facets. That was my take from it.

And Frank, too. The more I get to know Frank, I just love him so much. He’s a mystical type of guy. He’s got a spiritual connection. He sees more than most of us do. Very deep guy. Very special person. Love him to death.

Q: Do his teammates feel the same way?

HARBAUGH: No question about it. He is one of those guys that is very inspirational through his actions and what he says but mostly what he does. He’s one of those guys that can see things, points them out, has a great mind for football but just as a person in general, very special. A mystical man.

Q: In addition to using interesting words like mystical, you used a phrase about Darryl Morris looking like an arrow through snow as he runs down the field. We liked that. It was very evocative. I had never head that. Are you a hunter or is that a common phrase?

HARBAUGH: Very what was the word you used? Evocative?

Q: Evocative. I think I did say that.

HARBAUGH: I’ve got to look that one up. Evocative. Is that a word?

Q: Winston Churchill’s speeches during the Battle of Britain were evocative, how’s that?

HARBAUGH: Ok. It is a word.

Q: What is an arrow through snow? Are you a hunter?

HARBAUGH: No. Never have hunted.

Q: I’ve just never heard the phrase. It’s something you picked up?

HARBAUGH: Yeah, from my brother John. I cannot take credit for that one. The way he went through the man was like an arrow going through snow. He just went right through him.

Q: Were Kaepernick’s feet bothering him earlier in the year and not anymore and is that why he’s running well now?

HARBAUGH: He’s running well. It’s just what he does, what he’s capable of. He’s a very talented individual and you’ve seen it, many examples.

Q: What was it like being in that fracas on the field?

HARBAUGH: What was it like? It was good. It was good to be in the fray. Got stepped on. Got cleated in the foot. And that felt good too. I walked that off. It felt good to get cleated again. It’s been over a decade since I’ve been stepped on and cleated. It gave me something to walk off. It felt good to be honest with you. Life-giving energy. Feel like you’re in the fray getting jostled around. Don’t quite have the leg strength I once had though. I was getting moved more than I was moving anybody. Just another reminder, you stare in the mirror and it’s not the same reflection you saw in the mirror in my south quad college dormitory room.

Q: You said we may see Aldon Smith playing in a couple of weeks. Any update on that?

HARBAUGH: No. As I said at the time, I’m hopeful. In the overarching scheme of things hopeful for Aldon personally. And I think he’s on track. I know he’s treating one day at a time and that’s how we’re looking at it too. Make the day as good as possible and hopeful that we’ll see him soon. I don’t know when that will be. I’m not the authority for when that will be. I’m not the spokesman for when that will be. Just speaking as his coach and as his teammate and the way the rest of the team and coaches and players feel. We’re in his corner and support him and we miss him. Hopefully we see him soon.

Q: Are you going to take the team to see any sights in London?

HARBAUGH: Yes, we will do that. We’re going to do it as a team after Friday’s practice. We’re moving from out here in the country down to the city so on our way we’re going to take some buses through and see some of the sights and hopefully 10 Downing Street will be one of them.

I think you kind of get the picture. We’ll go to Buckingham Palace, mess with the guards a little bit. See Big Ben. Can you just imagine, you take 70 football players, jump out of the bus, snap some photos, back in the bus. It would be like one of those European Vacation movies. Chevy Chase, I’m picturing Chevy Chase here. Clark what his name? Griswold! I’m going to be Clark Griswold.

Jaguars head coach Bradley leaves team after father’s death

Jacksonville Jaguars coach Gus Bradley has left the team following his father's death. Bradley flew home to Zumbrota, Minn., on Monday to be with his family, turning interim coaching duties over to secondary coach DeWayne Walker. Bradley's father, Roy James Bradley, died Sunday night following a lengthy illness. He was 85. The youngest of the six kids, Bradley is expected to rejoin the team in London, possibly as early as Wednesday.

Fast impression: CB Morris making mark on special teams

Colin? Patrick? Vernon? Frank? No, the first player Jim Harbaugh mentioned in his press conference after the 49ers’ 31-17 win over the Titans on Sunday wasn’t a star whose first name makes him identifiable to the team’s faithful. Rather, it was an undrafted rookie from Texas State who casual fans may not know at all: Darryl Morris. The unheralded cornerback was on Harbaugh’s mind after he helped seal the win with his blazing speed in the fourth quarter. Morris, sprinting downfield as a gunner, closed in quickly and appeared to distract Darius Reynaud, who muffed Andy Lee’s punt at Tennessee’s 12-yard line before he was blasted a split-second later by Morris. Kassim Osgood recovered the loose ball in the end zone to give the 49ers a 31-10 lead with 6:16 left.

49ers notes: Next stop, London; McDonald’s bicep bounces back

The 49ers will spend the week in what has become their English country home – The Grove resort in Watford, Hertfordshire, which is north of London. The team spent the week there before beating the Broncos, 24-16, at Wembley Stadium …

Special teams, read-option success highlight all-around excellence in Nashville

Here is how the 49ers (5-2) graded in their 31-17 win Sunday over the host Tennessee Titans (3-4): Pass offense: Colin Kaepernick was 11-of-13 en route to a 24-0 lead, completing nine in a row at one point. One throw that stands out was how he scrambled right and found Vance McDonald at the 1, similar to a play last week that resulted in an interception. Anquan Boldin (five catches, 74 yards) and Vernon Davis (four catches, 62 yards) still hold down the fort. No other wideout had a catch, and the only other pass that went to one was a Kyle Williams near-completion that ignited a sideline melee. Grade: B+

Green light to go: Kaepernick, 49ers run past Titans for fourth straight win

Theories for Colin Kaepernick’s meager rushing opportunities this season have ranged from the coaches’ lack of faith in his backups to a mysterious foot injury to NFL defenses being better prepared for a new generation of running quarterbacks.

On Sunday, …

Notes: Aldon Smith’s return may come in couple weeks; special teams succeed; Gore climbs charts

Aldon Smith’s absence from the 49ers lineup grew to four games Sunday but his return from a treatment facility could come in the next couple weeks, coach Jim Harbaugh said after a 31-17 win over the Tennessee Titans. “I hear things are going pretty well,” said Harbaugh, noting that Smith’s mother, Kimberly, left her Atlanta-area home to attend Sunday’s game. Smith took an indefinite leave from the 49ers to enter an in-patient rehabilitation center after playing in a Sept. 22 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, a game that came two days after his arrest for suspicion of drunken driving in a one-car accident in San Jose. Smith reportedly must be cleared by doctors independent of the NFL before his return to the 49ers. “I’m not real knowledgeable on exactly when that’s going to be, but I think that at some point in the next couple of weeks,” Harbaugh said. “I’m hopeful, but I’m not the definitive source on any announcement there.”

Young cornerbacks give 49ers a lift

The 49ers got big contributions Sunday in Tennessee from a pair of young, unheralded defensive backs while posting a fourth consecutive victory.

Return of 49ers’ read option gives offense balance

Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman let Colin Kaepernick flash his dual-threat side and the balanced 49ers cruised to their fourth straight win.

NT Dorsey will start; RB James, CB Asomugha inactive

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — After missing two practices during the week with a hamstring injury, nose tackle Glenn Dorsey will start for the 49ers today against the Titans. Dorsey was limited in Friday’s practice, his first since he was injured in last week’s win over Arizona and was sidelined for the final 54 minutes. In the [...]

Reports: Locker will return from injury to start vs. 49ers

Sorry, 49ers, it looks like you won’t be able to kick around Ryan Fitzpatrick for the second time in as many seasons. Three weeks after he was carted off the field with a hip injury, Tennessee quarterback Jake Locker will start for the Titans on Sunday against the visiting 49ers, according to multiple reports. Assuming Locker is at close to full strength, he figures to be a significant upgrade over Fitzpatrick, who struggled in two winless starts in relief. Fitzpatrick threw one touchdown, four interceptions (the Titans have just five turnovers this season) and posted a 53.2 rating.

49ers tap rookie Quinton Dial for d-line help on Sunday

Rookie Quinton Dial, who had his first-ever NFL practice this week, was elevated to the 49ers’ active roster today and presumably will see his first action on Sunday against the Titans.

Dial’s activation signals that starting nose tackle Glenn Dorsey …

Ronnie Lott on Eric Reid: “Man, now that’s a baller.”

Here is what Ronnie Lott said about Eric Reid Friday on KNBR.

LOTT: There is nothing better than watching somebody who plays your position and does it very, very well and does it like he’s been there for four, five, six years. You forget that he’s a rookie. This kid not only has played well but I love the way he does things on the football field. You don’t see him out of position. You see him always around the ball. You see him making great tackles.

People always say, “I’ve played football all these years and I can’t change the way I’m going to hit.” And yet, (Reid) made a fantastic hit, stopped a guy from getting a first down, kept his head out the way, brought his shoulder, wrapped him up and kept him inches from getting the first down. Those plays really change the profile of the game. If they get a first down right there it takes up clock, it keeps the momentum going. We don’t measure that kind of play. That got them off the field. That allowed the offense to get back on the field.

Watching Eric Reid play right now and watching how he’s going about his game and doing all the little things is what has been so impressive. I sit there and say, “Man, now that’s a baller.”

Reid currently is the fourth-highest rated free safety on Pro Football Focus behind Devin McCourty, Earl Thomas and Michael Griffin.

Harbaugh: “It was no breakout game. That’s what Vernon Davis does.”

Here is a transcript of Jim Harbaugh’s Friday press conference, courtesy of the 49ers.

Did DL Glenn Dorsey practice a little bit today?

“Yes.”

How did he look?

“Did good.”

Good enough to play on Sunday?

“We’ll make that determination, but it was good.”

You’ve got a roster opening, are you going to use it between now and the game or is it kind of up in the air?

“Anticipate using it, filling it.”

Will it be NT Mike Purcell?

“We will make that decision by tomorrow.”

Tomorrow is the deadline, right?

“Yes.”

So, is it either Purcell or DT Quinton Dial? Is that the conundrum?

“Well, we know what we’re going to do. But, we’ll let the transaction speak for what we’re going to do.”

Titans TE Delanie Walker did a lot of things for you on the offense over the past two years. How would you say that TE Vernon Davis and the rest of the tight end group has kind of absorbed that loss. It seems like tight end is still a real strength for you. Just kind of absorbed the loss of Delanie this year.

“Yes, tight ends are playing extremely well, led by Vernon Davis who is a great player. I was asked earlier in the week by the Tennessee media, ‘what did the breakout game that Vernon had last week mean to the team,’ and do we expect that going forward, etc. And my reply was, ‘it was no breakout game and that’s what Vernon Davis does.’ He’s, in our opinion, the best tight end in the National Football League. Blocks, runs routes with the best of them. So, he leads the way in that regard. [TE] Vance [McDonald] and [TE Garrett] Celek have also done a very good job.”

It was nice to see WR Michael Crabtree was catching passes out there. What was it like to see him back on the field moving like he is?

“Good. Very excited and very proud of what Michael’s doing. These guys, Michael Crabtree, [WR] Mario Manningham, Quinton Dial, [DT] Tank Carradine, they go through grueling rehab and that’s been going on for months. And, just excited for them as football players as they transition back into playing. It’s a great process. I think it shows their toughness, mental toughness. Not everybody can do that. But, they’re doing it and I’m proud of them for that.”

Is the plan with Manningham to have him after they bye week?

“He’s practicing now. We don’t have a crystal ball on exactly when he plays in a game, but he looks really good, really good. He had a very good day yesterday and I’m excited for him.”

Without using percentages, where would you say he is as far as physically, football shape, coming back?

“He looks good, looks real good. It’s a matter of, it’s going to be soon.”

Titans QB Jake Locker took all the reps today in Tennessee. How do you balance preparing for two quarterbacks this week?

“Well, it’s not the first time a team’s been in the position that way. So you just do it and prepare for both.”

Is it a benefit that you faced Jake in college, just having a good idea of his skillsets?

“That I coached, benefitted …?”

And defensive coordinator Vic and the rest of the staff.

“I don’t think so. I don’t think it’s any advantage.”

Assuming he does play, what kind of distinctive challenges does he present? What kind of quarterback is he in your view?

“Very good quarterback. Experienced quarterback. They both are. They’re both good.”

Will LB Ahmad Brooks meet you guys in Tennessee?

“Yes.”

So he’s in Virginia now and then–?

“Yes.”

Any reaction to Dr. Dan Garza’s passing?

“Yes, we were stunned and deeply saddened by his passing. Myself, players, coaches, staff. We send our prayers, our condolences to his family and friends.”

Packers claim Harper; 49ers prepare for roster move

The 49ers waived Chris Harper likely to add a D-lineman for Sunday. Harper is headed for 'greener' pastures, not the 49ers practice squad.

Crabtree talks briefly about his rehab from torn Achilles

Wide receiver Michael Crabtree worked on his lateral movement and agility during a workout on a field adjacent to where his teammates practiced Friday. This marked the second straight day that Crabtree went through part of his rehab from a torn Achilles while the media were present. Afterward, Crabtree said he didn’t want to speak about his progress. He did say that, “I’m just working, grinding extra hard.” Crabtree sprinted and jumped off both feet while tossing a medicine ball Thursday. On Wednesday, Crabtree spent more time moving side to side, while catching short throws from a team athletic trainer. Coach Jim Harbaugh said earlier this month that he doesn’t expect Crabtree back until mid-November, even though Crabtree is eligible to return at any time now that he spent the first six weeks of the season on the physically unable to perform list, as required by the league.

Dorsey at practice, Brooks absent

Defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey participated in stretching and running exercises at the start of practice today. That represents progress for a player that missed practice altogether the past two days. It remains unclear whether Dorsey’s sore hamstring will heal enough for hm to start Sunday’s game, or even play a handful of downs, against the Tennessee [...]

Don’t forget me: Marcus Lattimore eying return to practice, too

Two injured 49ers draft picks, Tank Carradine and Quinton Dial, hit the practice field for the first time this week. So what’s the status of the third member of that group, running back Marcus Lattimore?

Jim Harbaugh said at the …

49ers’ defensive line, Titans’ run game both hurting

The 49ers figure to start a nose tackle Sunday who is a former undrafted free agent, began the season as a third-stringer at the position and has never started an NFL game. On the bright side for Tony Jerod-Eddie? He’ll have some company in uncharted territory. Titans RB Chris Johnson is averaging 3.1 yards a carry. (AP) Titans RB Chris Johnson is averaging 3.1 yards a carry. (AP) Jerod-Eddie, 23, who is expected to assume the spot of Glenn Dorsey against the Titans, will square off another greenhorn in Tennessee rookie center Brian Schwenke, a fourth-round pick from Cal. Schwenke will make his first NFL start in place of Rob Turner, a seven-year veteran who was benched this week. Titans coach Mike Munchak, a Hall of Fame guard with the Oilers, acknowledged there could be some growing pains for the new addition to the offensive line. Schwenke was inactive for the season’s first six games and has never taken a regular-season snap.

WR Crabtree spotted running sprints, jumping off both feet; Brooks, Baldwin, Dorsey miss practice

Update: Linebacker Ahmad Brooks did not practice, and the team cited it was not injury related. Wide receiver Jon Baldwin also was absent, due to an illness, per the team’s injury report. It’s all-hands-on-deck time for the 49ers when it comes to defensive linemen these days. Anyone and everyone is a candidate to play. That’s [...]

49ers release Harper, presumably clearing spot for defensive lineman

The Chris Harper Experiment appears to be over. The 49ers have waived the former Kansas State wide receiver, who they had envisioned transforming into a tight end in the NFL. Harper, a rookie, was a fourth-round pick of the Seahawks, who released him on Aug. 31. The 49ers signed him two days later, convincing him to join their 53-man roster rather than signing with Seattle’s practice squad. If he clears waivers, the 49ers could sign Harper to their practice squad.

Rookie NTs Dial, Purcell could be pressed into action with Dorsey ailing

With starter Glenn Dorsey’s status in doubt for Sunday’s game at Tennessee because of a hamstring injury, Dial could be pressed into action. The fifth-round pick, who is on the non-football injury list, went through his first full practice Wednesday.

Is there any doubt Manningham will play this season? Roman: “That is pure speculation. I wish I could give you a better answer.”

SANTA CLARA – Greg Roman spoke in the media tent Thursday afternoon. Here is a transcript.

ROMAN: We’ve had a real sprint to get caught up with (the Titans’ defensive) personnel. Some of these guys I remember from the Pac 10 when I was at Stanford – Ayers, Verner and Casey. We as a staff and as an offense are really focusing in on their personnel, getting to know them for the first time very unlike a division opponent. I think they’ve got a very good defense. Griffin and Pollard, very talented safeties. Pollard has been doing it a long time. It looks like he’s brought a lot of attitude to that defense. Verner and McCourty are doing a great job at corner, and Casey is one of the better defensive tackles we’ll play against all year. And then Brown and Ayers are some of the fastest linebackers we’ll play against. Very talented defense. They’ve held people to minimal scoring and we’re very impressed and I think our guys have a healthy respect for what they’re watching. Any questions?

Q: Where do things stand with Vance McDonald’s progression?

ROMAN: We’ve asked a lot of him the past couple weeks, really the past three weeks, and couldn’t be more pleased with how he’s done. Really expect him to take those kinds of steps moving forward. One thing you notice about players is everybody is going to make mistakes as a rookie. That’s a fact. Do you repeat those mistakes? Thus far he’s done a good job of learning from the good, the bad, the ugly and moving on a better football player. He’s done a really nice job and needs to continue. He’s a unique guy. I think he’ll become more inundated into our passing game as we go, but he’s performed a critical role for us in these past three victories. At times, you want to bring them along as opposed to just throwing them in the deep end. I think Vance is a great example of that.

Q: On the 18-play drive when you called the same play five or six times, how fun was that just to keep repeating that play until they stopped you?

ROMAN: Jim and I were saying it reminded us of when we played USC back in whatever year it was where we were just rolling the same play over and over and over again. The guys were just getting better at it every time. It’s a credit to the players on the field. When they’re doing that, calling the plays is pretty easy.

Q: Why was LaMichael James was inactive on Sunday?

ROMAN: Every week there is a real, real, on our team there are a lot of different variables that go into it and a lot of different scenarios that could happen. That just happened to be where we were at as a team. LaMichael is a very important part of our offense and will continue to be so.

Q: How have Kyle Williams and Jon Baldwin looked in practice as you look to establish a No.2 wide receiver?

ROMAN: They’re doing a really good job. Kyle had a huge play on the third-and-7 at the end of the game. Really good timing. Big play for him. Wouldn’t have been an 18-play drive if he hadn’t have made that play. Jon continues to do a good job and he gets better every week. Week to week their roles will change but they’re doing a good job and we have complete and utter faith in them.

Q: Is Mario Manningham anywhere near football shape?

ROMAN: He’s getting there. It’s a process and anything beyond that is irrelevant. Yesterday was his first day back out there. Jim talked to him about a certain way of getting back into it. Thought Mario did a really good job with it and he’ll just continue to progress but it’s day to day. You love to see him back out there. Any time you go through a season with a guy, you develop a trust and a relationship and just a feeling of togetherness. When you see a guy like that come back from an injury, all of us are just thrilled. He’s just going to work his way back.

Q: Do you have any doubts that Manningham will be able to play this year?

ROMAN: Well, he had an injury, he’s rehabbed it very hard and he’s starting the process. Beyond that is pure speculation. I wish I could give you a better answer. He’s working hard and making progress

Q: What are your thoughts on Dr. Garza’s passing?

ROMAN: I was deeply shocked and saddened by it. I think everybody was. It was addressed and I think we all mourn and pray for him. I think that really sums it up.

The Titans, Frank Gore and … bags of dung

The Titans rank second in the NFL in turnover differential and a key to their success has been their ability to force fumbles: Tennessee is tied for fourth in the league in fumbles caused (11) and recovered (7). Their success at stripping the ball has caught the attention of Jim Harbaugh in advance of the 49ers’ visit to Nashville on Sunday. “They’re the best we’ve seen at clubbing, punching, stripping, lawn-mowering, just lodging it out from opponents,” Harbaugh told the Tennessee media. “It’s always a critical thing to our well-being to have ball security and not turn the ball over. It’s emphasized weekly, daily, but, yes, this week we have to emphasize it even more.”

James: ‘I have to suck it up and keep getting better’

The 49ers, apparently, had high hopes for speedster LaMichael James. The club selected him in the second round of the 2012 NFL draft just one year after choosing running back Kendall Hunter in the fourth round. LaMichael James finished third in the Heisman Trophy balloting as a sophomore at Oregon, and placed in the top 10 as a junior before turning pro. He rushed for more than 5,000 yards in his three college seasons, and averaged 7.3 yards per rushing attempt in his final year. But James has found himself mostly as a scout-team player and out of uniform on game days as one of the 49ers’ seven inactive players in 16 of his 22 regular-season games since arriving in the NFL.

49ers medical director Garza passes away

Dr. Daniel Garza attended all 49ers games and was responsible for diagnosing concussions on the sideline during games.

Bethel-Thompson preps for second game in month at Wembley, where grandfather won Olympic gold

When the NFL returns London for a second time this season, so could McLeod Bethel-Thompson. Currently the 49ers third-string quarterback, he suited up as a Minnesota Vikings backup in their Sept. 29 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bethel-Thompson raved about the experience that awaits the 49ers next week in England before they face the Jacksonville Jaguars on Oct. 27 at Wembley Stadium. “I’ve got another twist for you: Did you know my grandfather won the gold medal at Wembley Stadium in 1948 in the shot put?” Bethel-Thompson said this week. Wilbur “Moose” Thompson indeed won gold with an Olympic-record toss of 57 feet, 8 3/4 inches. His grandson’s throws consisted only of the warm-up variety at Wembley last month, having stayed on the sideline during the game as Matt Cassel’s backup.

49ers contemplating roster move on defensive line

Nose tackle Glenn Dorsey does not appear likely to play Sunday due to a hamstring strain. Meanwhile, Ray McDonald (biceps) and Justin Smith (shoulder) sat out of practice Wednesday with ailments that are not expected to keep them sidelined against the Tennessee Titans. The 49ers compensated for those absences with rookie defensive linemen Tank Carradine and Quinton Dial going through their first full practice on Wednesday. Both players participated on the scout team.

49ers starting defensive line sits out Wednesday’s practice

The 49ers started today’s practice without their starting defensive line.

Kaepernick says he has hang nails on both pinkie toes and they hurt a “little bit.”

SANTA CLARA — Colin Kaepernick spoke in the locker room Wednesday afternoon. Here is a transcript courtesy of the 49ers.

Do you see a lot of similarities in what their defense is doing to what San Francisco’s defense is doing, creating turnovers and?

“They’re a good defense. They play hard. They play fast.”

Challenges on the road, always a challenge. What do you anticipate this week?

“Same road challenges as every week. You have to go into someone else’s house and try to get a win.”

The coaches said they actually since this is a team they haven’t seen, started prepping and doing some advanced prep last week. Did you do any of that or do you just let them do that and bring it to you this week?

“I’m week-to-week.”

Head coach Jim Harbaugh said their defense really likes to try to force turnovers, knock things out, they’re really physical and aggressive. Do you think you’re going to emphasize protecting the ball a little bit more this week than you do normally?

“You have to protect the ball every week, it doesn’t matter who you’re playing. That’s a big part of football is being able to hold on to it.”

RB Frank Gore has said over the years that he goes back to the draft for motivation to see which running backs were drafted ahead of him. Five teams drafted a quarterback ahead of you and Tennessee is one of them. Do you use that as some type of fuel or motivation as well?

“It’s something I definitely haven’t forgot.”

Did you meet with the Titans?

“Yes.”

Did you have a feeling they might draft you that high where they drafted Titans QB Jake Locker?

“I thought I was someone they were interested in. Whether it was then or later, I didn’t know, but it’s in the past now.”

Titans head coach Mike Munchak talked about you and had good memories of you watching film with you and all that stuff. Do you remember much about your visit and anything you can share?

“I thought it went well. Other than that, I don’t remember too much.”

You’ve been on the injury report with a foot condition. What is the issue and has it impacted you whatsoever?

“A hangnail.”

Really?

“Yes.”

So it hasn’t impacted you?

“No.”

Just hurts?

“Little bit.”

Can we ask what toe you have your hangnail on?

“Pinky toe.”

Right or left foot?

“Both.”

The trips to Youngstown, how much did you enjoy that time where the team was together for a week and really that was your family for a week? And how will this sort of going forward straight to London be similar?

“Well, whether we’re in Youngstown, London or here, it really doesn’t change my relationship with my teammates. So, that’s not really a factor. It’s just the fact that you’re always together. We’re always together here as well, but you’re sleeping in the same hotel instead.”

Is there danger though overlooking this upcoming game knowing that you’re going to be away in London for a week? Is that something you guys talk about, not to overlook this?

“I think everybody’s focused on Tennessee right now. They’re a good team. They have a good defense and that’s where our focus needs to be.”

You talk about protecting the ball and there have been some games where you’ve had some strips as well. When you look at your play, what can you do better to avoid, because it’s usually when you’re scrambling and running and it’s difficult. When you look at that, what’s something that sticks out with you?

“Squeeze the ball tighter. That’s the biggest thing. Make sure you’re holding on tight.”

Did Vernon Davis give you his game ball? Coach Harbaugh said that if a guy turns down the game ball he can give it to somebody else and that’s what Vernon planned to do.

“He did that after the Texans game.”

Ok, not this week?

“No.”

Having said that you’re, you know, week-to-week, are you still kind of looking forward to the opportunity to go in London and play in the NFL showcase game?

“Yeah, but right now we’re focused on going to Tennessee.”

What have you seen on tape from Titans CB Alterraun Verner? Do you look at them first? Do you look at the defensive line? How do you look at the scouting report?

“Look at the defense as a whole. You have to know what they’re doing as a whole to know what each individual is trying to get done.”

Do you see Verner being as underrated or what skillsets does he have that stands out to you?

“Their defense as a whole is a good defense. They play fast. They play hard. They know what they’re doing.”

The Titans coach, Mike Munchak, was saying how much he enjoyed watching the 49ers line dominating the run game last week. When you’re back there, how much appreciation do you have when you see these guys mauling and doing what they’re supposed to do?

“I think my appreciation for them isn’t just for what they do on game day. They come in every day. They work their butt off. They’re in there lifting early in the morning. Practice, they’re running around making sure they’re putting in work. So, the end result that comes out on game day is because of the hard work they put in.”

What type of things does WR Mario Manningham bring to this offense that maybe it was lacking in the first six weeks?

“He’s another playmaker. He’s proven what he can do in this league.”

Any texts with Titans TE Delanie Walker this week?

“Haven’t talked to him yet. I’ll get to him a little bit later this week.”

Harbaugh on Walker: “I’m not happy to see him in a Titans No.82 jersey.”

SANTA CLARA – Jim Harbaugh spoke in the media tent Wednesday afternoon. Here is a transcript.

Q: What are your early impressions on Tank Carradine and Quinton Dial?

HARBAUGH: It’s early. Had some walkthrough at this point. Excited, that’s my impression. I know they are. It’s much like their first day in football. I’m sure that there is some gravel in the gut and some anticipation, excitement, nerves, all those things. Working with them, our players are, our coaches are to get them acclimated to play 11-on -11 football.

Q: What do you know about Glenn Dorsey’s status?

HARBAUGH: He did some working out yesterday, rehabbing, and we’ll see where that is today.

Q: How do you fit Eric Wright into the mix?

HARBAUGH: Much like the two defensive linemen and Mario Manningham, get him back and acclimated to playing 11-on-11 football.

Q: What’s been your impression of Delanie Walker this season?

HARBAUGH: I’m not happy to see him in a Titans No.82 jersey. He’s really playing well. On a personal level I miss Delanie. I wish him a long and successful career and I have great memories of him when we were teammates. I know the competitor he is. I know the player he is. I know our challenge, our task in defending him is high.

Q: What did you notice about the Titans in their last game against Seattle?

HARBAUGH: Offensively, they run the ball very effectively. Very physical offensive line. Very stout defensively. Probably the best team we’ve seen at stripping, clubbing, punching the ball out, creating turnovers. Very physical and competitive secondary. Fine football team. Very well coached. Excellent on special teams.

Q: When it comes to Colin Kaepernick running, is he under marching orders to stay safe?

HARBAUGH: Marching orders? No.

Q: Jake Locker has been cleared medically. Does that change your week of preparation?

HARBAUGH: You’re never in a position of knowing until you know, until they’re ruled out. There has to be an awareness and a preparation.

Q: How different is their offense when he’s in the game?

HARBAUGH: I’ve always thought this, he’s like a running back with his ability to run the football. Always thought that. Seen it up close and been defeated by it. He’s evolved, grown. He’s always been an extremely tough competitor. Knowing the competitor he is, if there is any possible way that he would play he’ll be out there.

Q: Did you guys work him before the draft?

HARBAUGH: At the combine?

Q: Privately.

HARBAUGH: No.

Boone fined $7,875 for retaliation against Cardinals

Right guard Alex Boone plans to appeal a fine he received as a result of his retaliation against Arizona Cardinals nose tackle Alameda Ta’amu. Boone was fined $7,875 for a personal foul late in the 49ers' 32-20 victory Sunday when he reacted angrily after Ta’amu appeared to kick him in the face. When asked Wednesday if he would appeal the fine, Boone told CSNBayArea.com, “Of course. I didn’t do anything wrong.”

Titans’ coach fondly recalls evaluating Kaepernick … before passing on him to draft Locker

that each passed on him for a different quarterback in the 2011 draft. That three-game spree begins Sunday at the Tennessee Titans, who selected Jake Locker with the eighth-overall pick. “It’s something I definitely haven’t forgotten,” Kaepernick said Wednesday. After facing the Titans, Kaepernick will accompany the 49ers to London to face the Jacksonville Jaguars (Blaine Gabbert, No. 10 overall), and then comes a Nov. 10 home game against the Carolina Panthers (Cam Newton, No. 1).

Delanie Walker on Aldon Smith: “He’s a little wild dude.”

Delanie Walker spoke on a conference call with Bay Area reporters Wednesday morning. Here is a transcript.

Q: You’re on pace to have the best year you’ve ever had. What’s going on out there to make you be so productive?

WALKER: Mainly because I’m the first read at tight end. They put in plays for me to get the ball and to try to make plays. That’s all I ask for and I think that’s why I’m here.

Q: Did it ever get frustrating for you being second fiddle behind Vernon Davis?

WALKER: Not at all. I wasn’t drafted as a tight end. I was drafted as a receiver so I was trying to become a good tight end in the NFL. I felt like learning behind Vernon was a good opportunity for me to see how to do what he did blocking-wise and that’s what I tried to develop. Now, I think it’s a good opportunity that I had to break off from that and have my own identity.

Q: Knowing Aldon like you do, did this catch you by surprise or did you almost see it coming?

WALKER: Aldon is a young guy. He’s a little wild dude. He’s kind of wild. I didn’t think something like that would happen during the season. I just read what had happened. I didn’t think he would get into any more trouble after what was going on, but I don’t know. I don’t know how he has changed. I haven’t been out there in San Francisco, haven’t talked to him in a while. It kind of did surprise me a little bit.

Q: What are your thoughts on Eric Reid?

WALKER: He’s playing fast. He’s trying to become the second Whitner, or the Hitner. He’s coming up and making big hits and great tackles. I can’t wait to get out there and play against him.

Q: You mentioned Hitner. What do you think of the pending name change?

WALKER: It fits. He does hit. He likes to come up and try to destroy people. It fits him. If he keeps playing that way, I ain’t mad at him if he changes his name to that.

Q: Everything considered, was this a good move for you to go to Tennessee?

WALKER: Yeah. It was a great move for me. I’m happy here with the organization. The coaches are great. I’m getting the opportunity that I want. I feel like I should have more, but hey, slow process, we’re going to get back on pace and I think I’m going to have more receptions and bigger games.

SF native Wright’s journey hits close to home

Eric Wright grew up in the shadow of Candlestick at Hunters Point. Activated by the 49ers this week, the well-traveled corner is ready to live his dream.

Manningham ‘trying to stay right upstairs,’ Dorsey update

Mario Manningham bounced into the 49ers locker room after his first practice with the team in 9 1/2 months to find a small group of reporters waiting at his locker. “Do you have a minute?” I asked the wide receiver. “We’re excited to talk to you.” “I’m excited to talk to you, too!” Manningham answered laughing. Manningham, understandably, was in a great mood. He had never experienced a major injury before he tore two ligaments in his left knee last December 23 in a blow out loss to Seattle.

Cramming speed: Rookies Dial, Carradine stay late after first practice

While Glenn Dorsey was getting treatment on his injured right hamstring Tuesday afternoon, Tank Carradine and Quinton Dial were getting extra coaching on the practice field. Along with receiver…

Question marks surround Dorsey, Dial and Carradine

Who will be the man in the middle? That question remains unanswered five days before the 49ers visit the Titans. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said today he wasn’t sure nose tackle Glenn Dorsey would be able to play Sunday after he sustained a hamstring injury in last week’s 32-20 win over Arizona. “I don’t think anybody knows just yet,” Fangio said on KNBR. “We don’t think it’s as bad as initially feared, but hamstrings can be kind of fickle. So I don’t think we’ll know that until the end of the week.”

Lemonier sets high standard with All-Pro away

Corey Lemonier received his first Division I scholarship offers less than a year after he took up football at Hialeah (Fla.) High, was a first-team all-SEC pick as a sophomore at Auburn and declared for the NFL draft after his junior season. This season, the 49ers unexpectedly needed the rookie outside linebacker to be a quick study at the NFL level. And the third-round pick’s performance in Sunday’s 32-20 win over Arizona offered the most powerful evidence yet that he could continue his precocious ways.

Seahawks try out ex-49ers linebackers Grant, Gooden

The Seattle Seahawks held auditions Monday with four inside linebackers. Not surprisingly, two of those inside linebackers have close ties to the 49ers. Larry Grant, who served a four-game suspension to open the season for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs, worked out for the Seahawks, along with Tavares Gooden. Grant and Gooden were on the 49ers’ roster the past two seasons. In fact, Grant started three games for the 49ers in 2011. Late in the '11 season he started in place of Patrick Willis and provided a key play when he stripped Seahawks quarterback Tarvaris Jackson of the ball with about a minute remaining to help preserve the 49ers’ 19-17 victory.

LB NaVorro Bowman to be profiled in documentary

Two years after Patrick Willis opened up about his painful past in an emotional documentary, fellow 49ers inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman will do much the same this week. Bowman will be featured Tuesday (4 p.m. PST) in ESPN’s E:60, the same program that profiled Willis in 2011 and detailed his difficult relationship with his troubled [...]

Harbaugh says LaMichael James has “big role” on 49ers, but what is it?

Jim Harbaugh on Monday insisted running back LaMichael James has a “big role” role on the 49ers despite the fact he was a healthy scratch for Sunday’s game against the Cardinals. “We definitely all value LaMichael as a backup running …

Harbaugh: “We didn’t get a fast start in terms of moving the football offensively.”

SANTA CLARA — Jim Harbaugh spoke in the defensive meeting room Monday afternoon. Here is a transcript courtesy of the 49ers.

Were there a few more people getting treatment today after having such a physical game yesterday?

“It was normal, a normal day.”

Did it seem like a more physical game than usual?

“It was very physical.”

On the 18-play drive in the fourth quarter, how well-executed were the blocking assignments all across the board, lineman, tight ends, receivers, fullbacks?

“There was some good, a lot of good. The highlighted one would be the touchdown run by [RB] Kendall [Hunter], block by [TE] Vernon Davis and [T] Anthony Davis was textbook. That was something to really be admired and highlighted.”

Do you have an update on DL Glenn Dorsey at all?

“You know, I personally stopped by the doctors in the training room before coming to the press conference here. They’re still working through the information and their data. So, I don’t have anything to report to you yet.”

Is there a possibility that NT Mike Purcell could be elevated to the 53-man?

“Really wouldn’t talk about the possibilities right now. Let’s kind of wait and see where we’re at. But, Mike’s doing a good job.”

Have there been any moves made to elevate some of those reserve list guys to practice? Does that have to be made?

“Sure. We’re looking at that. And every roster position and thinking through all of the possibilities. But, as far as it pertains to [DT] Quinton Dial and [DT] Tank Carradine and [CB] Eric Wright, [WR] Mario Manningham, they can start practicing this week and we anticipate that.”

So that would start tomorrow, the clock, that 21-day clock would start tomorrow?

“Yeah, we’ll anticipate that tomorrow.”

Do you expect a number of those guys to be ready after 21 days or is this just a diagnostic thing just when they practice to see how they’re doing?

“Yeah. Well, I mean, the way it works for everybody, and every guy’s different, but pretty much the way it works is a guy that’s coming off of injury in some form or fashion, especially guy’s that are coming off of a serious injury, I mean, they go through a period of grueling rehab until they’re healed and medically cleared by the doctors to participate in practice. And then, it’s where they come back at. Where they come back football shape, football playing ability. Is that 100 percent of what they were? Is it better than what they were? Is it 95, 90, 85, 80? How long is it to go from, maybe they come back at 60. Then it’s 70, then it’s 80, then it’s 90. There’s a process there once they come back to being ready and to compete in games. And then, the final step is, they’ve got to be better than somebody? Are they going to be better than somebody that’s at their position? So, you know, I think there’s been a lot of discussion in the past about players that come back from injury. Do they still have their job, etc.? It really kind of just falls back into that process. You come back cleared by the doctors. What percent are you of what you were? And then, are you better than somebody else? That’s the final piece. When that process is complete, then people are either back in there playing or somebody else is in there playing.”

There’s trade deadlines coming up. There’s always speculation about what receiver’s out there. It seems like whenever names come up the 49ers are always talked about. With Manningham and WR Michael Crabtree, with their returns in the future, what do you feel about the 49ers wide receiver position?

“Well, just general practice again, there’s always possibilities out there and you can go on endless speculation if you commented every time somebody speculates about something, which we just choose not to do. I wouldn’t believe everything you read on the internet.”

Some of it, but not all of it?

“I wouldn’t believe everything. Or you can take the approach of it’s on the internet it must be true. So, since I see there’s a group of people that do that too, you know. It’s on the internet, it must be true. But, our receivers are coming. I thought, a lot of good things in the game, some big-time plays made by those guys. It’s not always just the low hanging fruit that you say, ‘OK, how may catches did they have? How many yards did they have?’ Quite a few other things that will really be highlighted. The 4th-n-1 play that [FB] Bruce [Miller] picked up, the play with a great cutoff block by [WR] Anquan Boldin. I was very excited to see [WR] Kyle Williams make the big third down conversion along with [QB] Colin [Kaepernick]. Another textbook route by Anquan to pick up the third down earlier in that 18-play drive.”

That drive had a little bit of everything didn’t it?

“It did. It was a great drive. And it was setup by a great play by [LB] Patrick Willis. Causing the turnover and [S] Eric Reid recovered the fumble. That was outstanding. [LB] Corey Lemonier caused a fumble and [LB] NaVorro Bowman was able to recover that. Eric Reid got an interception for us. [CB] Carlos Rogers got an interception. Corey Lemonier got a sack that resulted in a safety. Those plays were huge in turning the game in our favor and credit those guys that made those plays.”

Could you address kind of the conflicting emotions of, you know, you’ve got a jacked-up crowd and then you potentially have a guy that’s down on the field and he’s hurt and it’s a serious injury and they’re doing the wave and guys are trying to say this isn’t the right time? It’s kind of conflicting emotions going on at that particular time.

“I think everybody that was playing in the game, their emotions were with [Cardinals DE] Calais Campbell. They were praying and they were supporting him and they were excited when they saw the hands moving and the thumb go up. So, I don’t think anybody was conflicted down there. Everybody was together on that, both sides, all players on each team.”

Is there a right way to kind of address the crowd and say hey this isn’t the right time and place for the wave?

“I don’t tell people what to do. But, I think people know that if the cart’s coming out on the field that signifies a pretty serious injury. And the best thing to do is silence, let the doctors do their work and collective prayer would be much appreciated.”

Where is RB LaMichael James in his development and what does, I guess, he have to do to get more playing time?

“His development’s been fine. He’ll be back playing. I know the talk about ‘insurance’, etc., and it’s no slight to LaMichael. LaMichael’s a very good player and he is a very valuable member of our team. We’ve had a situation where we’ve dressed three running backs on certain games and in certain games we’ve dressed four. But, you know, I definitely, we definitely all value and look at LaMichael as a backup running back, like a two. And, there’s going to come time where he is a, like last year, where he’s fully in the mix and depended on and that time will come again. But, he’s doing a good job. I know he wants to play, he wants to be contributing, and when he is dressed he is contributing and doing that.”

Will this be a week-to-week thing as far as three of four running backs?

“Yes. When all the running backs are healthy and playing, yeah there’s, there’ll be a week-to-week thing whether we go three or four.”

Is he, obviously, is he an option to spark the punt return game? Because it doesn’t seem like you guys have gotten much productivity out of that so far.

“Yes. No, we’ve had some good ones too now. We had a 22-yard return two weeks ago. So, but I mean, he’s definitely an option in the return game.”

Well, I guess what I’m trying to say is, Kyle has a lot of fair catches. I think he has twice as many fair catches as returns. Is that fine with you or is it, would you like to see him take a little bit more risk?

“We were singling up the gunners in the game. There was another instance where we called, we doubled the wrong side and tried to make an adjustment late in the snap and didn’t get it done. That’s not, those fair catches aren’t all on Kyle. I mean, he does a good job. He does a good job whether to fair catch or catch and return.”

In talking about LaMichael, you referenced insurance, which got some play.

“Yeah, I saw that get some play and some banter.”

Did you have a discussion with him that, I don’t know if clear the air is the right term, but about that?

“Always. Always communicating and have conversations every day with guys. But yeah, just to let LaMichael know he’s a valued guy around here and has a big role for our football team.”

Obviously the circumstances aren’t what you would like, but Corey Lemonier has stepped in for LB Aldon Smith. How can this experience help him going forward with his development now and later in the season?

“Obvious answer is it helps a lot. Get better at football by playing football. He’s doing some very good things.”

All the takeaways, eight takeaways that have led to scoring opportunities and points for you the last two weeks. How encouraging is that and what do you see in terms of your secondary and some of the plays there?

“Well, it’s been good. Very opportunistic. You love seeing your defense generate turnovers, be opportunistic. And the safety play, when they’re getting involved in the turnovers, that’s been something in the past has been very good for us. The evidence the amount of times [S] Donte Whitner, [former 49ers S] Dashon Goldson were involved in turnovers, stripping, causing, recovering, intercepting the football, and I think it’s very encouraging that Eric Reid is getting in on that, recovering, causing or intercepting. Something that’s been very good for our defense.”

Reid was saying last night that watching Donte, being around Donte every day has taught him how to be a football player, how to work. Have you seen that progression of Donte taking that mentor role and sort of Reid growing in that?

“Yes. I mean seeing it for, good evidence for three years now, going on three years. And talked about it last week, highlighted the secondary and how well they’ve played in the game against the Texans. Donte Whitner being the catalyst of the communication and getting things orchestrated back, on the back end. So, yes have seen that.”

DT Ray McDonald was saying after the game that he didn’t feel like he had his full strength in his right arm. What is the belief moving forward that he’ll adjust to that or that will improve as the weeks go on?

“The feeling?”

Yeah, the strength of the arm.

“Yeah, I don’t know what the feeling is on that from the doctors.”

Is that something that if he doesn’t feel like he’s got enough strength in that arm, you feel like you have to make adjustments at that position?

“I really don’t speculate without knowing exactly what I’m talking about.”

Any early reads on your opponent this week?

“Yeah, good football team. Watching them now. Got started watching them a little bit later in the week last week, but diving into it right now.”

You guys have been to Youngstown a couple years, last year in the Super Bowl. Does this week before a week-long road trip, does it change at all for you? Do you have to do stuff to get prepared for the extended stay away from the facility?

“This week, no. This would be a week like we’ve had before we play an East Coast game.”

All the London stuff, do you just not get involved in that stuff?

“Some of the logistics, but the major logistics will be handled our staff, our front office staff and [manager, team logistics] Steve Risser does an excellent job of that and our security team. They’ll carry the water on that one. They’ll have the heavy burden of that. Coaches and players will be concentrating on the ballgame and the preparation this week.”

You weren’t here the last time this happened. The team went to Carolina, lost the game, and then there was some speculation about getting the passports together and packing and everything playing some effect on that. Do you have to address that? I’m guessing you probably don’t have to worry about packing too much, but just the extra stuff.

“No, you’re exactly right. Pretty much, I’ll just go with the clothes on my back. I’ll pack my playbook, a toothbrush and a great attitude and we’ll see if we can’t encourage the rest of the guys to do the same. Most of the passports, we’ve got those taken care of.”

Is that a lot of work?

“Been working on it. Been working on it for a while now. There were one or two hitches with the government shutdown, but we’re working through it.”

When you look at the game video from yesterday and how obviously the defense gave the ball in the red zone twice in the first quarter. In those first four drives for the 49ers, what did the offense struggle with overall? What caught your eye?

“Struggled getting a first down. There were different reasons for different plays and different possessions, but yeah we weren’t picking up first downs. And the two in the red zone, we didn’t put the ball in the end zone. And yeah, there’s reasons for that. Different reasons. Not going to go into all of them, but we didn’t get a fast start in terms of moving the football offensively.”

We’ve heard a few of your defenders the last week or two say they had their identity back. They maybe feel like they didn’t have that ball-hawking identity for a couple games. What’s your take on that?

“They’re definitely doing a great job. You looked at this game, the game before, the game before that, really, really outstanding in a lot of areas. This past game against Arizona, there’s so much good and then there’s two big, explosive plays that you give Arizona credit for. But, yeah overall doing some very good things defensively and encouraged by that. Same offensively. Made plays when the team had to. Like we talked about, that game could have gone either way yesterday and some opportunistic plays, some good play. Anthony Davis, thought he had one of his best games, certainly this year. Did an outstanding job. Vernon doesn’t want a game ball he said, but he had a career day and made some great plays. We talked about the one corner route on the sideline and it was even better watching tape of it. The adjustment that he made on the ball was outstanding. And Colin played extremely well too. I thought his decision making, timing, location of his passes was outstanding. Maybe a poor decision here, a one missed location ball, but those are high percentage. I mean, that’s A-plus kind of stuff from the quarterback. There’s good things, there’s encouraging things and we’ll keep striving to get better.”

When Vernon turns down a game ball, does he get the option to hand that game ball to somebody else or is that your decision? He wanted to give it to Colin.

“He could. He could bequeath it to somebody else.”

OK. That’s allowed?

“That’s allowed.”

Colin’s interception was tipped, the ball was tipped. I mean, was that a questionable decision or was that because of the tip that it was intercepted?

“You know, I thought it was, I really thought it was going to be a questionable decision or a poor located throw. But, he really, really the ball was going to be offset just perfectly. Kind of like the one he offset to Anquan Boldin in the, on part of the 18-play drive. It really would have been, it would have been a touchdown throw. In a split-second decision that would have been the right decision. Unfortunately, it got tipped.”

WR Manningham among group poised to make practice debut

The 49ers could use another proven wide receiver and they might need some reinforcements along their banged-up defensive line. Right on cue, some assistance could arrive this week when four players on injury lists are expected to practice for the first time this season. Jim Harbaugh said today he anticipates wide receiver Mario Manningham, cornerback Eric Wright and rookie defensive linemen Tank Carradine and Quinton Dial will make their practices debuts Tuesday.

49ers sign guard Al Netter to practice squad

The 49ers made an addition to their practice squad on Monday, bringing guard Al Netter back to their practice squad.

Boone: Am I supposed to be an animal now?

When 49ers right guard Alex Boone was kicked in the face after the 49ers scored the game-clinching touchdown Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, his reaction was predictable. It may have been predictable. It may have been understandable. But Boone’s retaliation directed at Cardinals nose tackle Alameda Ta’amu was not acceptable to 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh. “That’s on me,” Boone said. “I got to be a better man, a smarter man. I was upset. The bottom line is that falls on me. I shouldn’t have been in the rage that I was.”

Film review: McDonald not himself; Staley excels; two-faced special teams

The 49ers and Cardinals seem to have a lot of odd-flow games. What I mean by that is that Sunday’s contest had a very strange rhythm. Both teams made a lot of mistakes. The 49ers defense produced four turnovers and …

Steel worker killed at Levi’s Stadium Monday morning

A steel worker died Monday when some rebar fell on him as he was working at the site of the new Levi's Stadium in Santa Cara. This is the second worker-related death at the stadium in four months. Peter Melton, spokesman for Cal-OSHA, said the subcontractor worked for Gerdau Ameristeel, and the accident was reported at 6:45 a.m. Melton did not immediately have more specifics on the accident, or how the steel beams fell on top of the man. The 49ers issued the following statement: "The 49ers organization learned this morning that an accident occurred involving a driver as he delivered materials to the stadium. Our sincerest thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and co-workers affected by this tragedy."

York, others appalled 49ers fans did wave while Campbell injured

he 49ers moved into second place all alone in the NFC West standings with their 32-20 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. However, the team’s fan base absorbed a huge loss of reputation on Sunday. Many of the 69,732 fans in attendance took part in the wave while a stretcher was summoned onto the Candlestick Park field late in the fourth quarter for Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Calais Campbell. “To say I'm disappointed some fans did the wave this afternoon while @Campbell93 was down is understatement,” 49ers CEO Jed York wrote on Twitter. “Hope you get well soon Calais.”
