Crabtree’s return does not slow down Boldin or Davis

In Michael Crabtree’s return to action, he tied his career-high with a 60-yard reception. But, mostly, Crabtree took a backseat Sunday to Anquan Boldin and Vernon Davis in the 49ers’ 23-13 victory over the St. Louis Rams. Boldin caught nine passes for 98 yards, and Vernon Davis flashed his hurdling skills in the midst of his four-catch, 82-yard showing that featured a leap over Rams defensive back Janoris Jenkins at the goal line for a 17-yard touchdown pass from Colin Kaepernick. “He was on his game and made the plays that only he can make,” 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said of Davis.

Postgame notes: Boone fills in for Staley; Gore miffed at output; Kaepernick flourishes

Left tackle Joe Staley again got hurt against the St. Louis Rams, but unlike his Sept. 26 ankle sprain, he’s expected to miss a couple games because of Sunday’s right-knee injury. An initial diagnosis is that Staley sprained his medial collateral ligament, the same injury that’s sidelined left guard Mike Iupati the past two games, according to the Sacramento Bee. Staley confirmed he would undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of his injury. After the 23-13 win, he walked off the field with a knee brace under his sweatpants.

Harbaugh: “We made plays in the passing game – Colin moving.”

SAN FRANCISCO – Jim Harbaugh spoke about Colin Kaepernick at the podium after the 49ers’ 23-13 win over the Rams. Here is a transcript.

Q: How was the Rams’ defense playing your offense?

HARBAUGH: They did a good job containing the run. We made plays in the passing game – Colin moving. He had a lot of big plays off of scrambles, either him running it or moving to create space. I thought he did a great job throwing the ball in those scramble situations.

A terrific play that me made to Vernon Davis on the naked bootleg. Three weeks ago when we played Carolina, that turned into a big negative play. We really learned from that and responded in this game. Had pressure exactly the same way, off the edge. He got depth. He retreated with dignity and feathered the ball, laid it in there for Vernon to make a big play. That was the first one where he hurdled a man. That was really encouraging.

‘I’m hitting it’: Marcus Lattimore not holding back in 49ers practice

Rookie Marcus Lattimore said his surgically repaired knee has held up perfectly as he’s gone through his first 49ers practices this month. Lattimore said he usually takes about 15 snaps with the scout team during a practice and gets perhaps …

Double trouble: Brooks, Smith could become rare 49ers’ tandem

After he received national attention two weeks ago for a sack that didn’t count, Ahmad Brooks said it was the most publicity he’s received in his eight-year career. And that’s probably true. Since 2011, Brooks, 29, has been an above-average outside linebacker on one of the NFL’s top teams, but he’s mostly flown under the radar. Of course, anonymity tends to cling to you when your linebacker colleagues are All-Pros: Aldon Smith, Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman. This season, however, Brooks is having a season that merits mention with the NFL’s elite. With five regular-season games remaining, Brooks’ career-high 8 ½ sacks rank 14th in the league and are 1 ½ more than his previous career-best.

Gore should benefit from Crabtree’s return

The 49ers own the No. 6 rushing attack in the NFL. And no team has thrown for fewer yards this season than the 49ers. And for that reason, the 49ers have faced defense that have been geared up to stop Frank Gore’s inside running. As 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman said recently, “We've seen some extreme looks.” One of those unique defensive alignments came on the first play of the second quarter when Washington stacked nine defenders with seven yards of the line of scrimmage. That left Vernon Davis single-covered against cornerback Josh Wilson. With no safety in the middle of the field, Colin Kaepernick was able to hook up with Davis on a 40-yard pass completion.

Practice notes: Seems like old times with Crabtree, Manningham on field together

(UPDATED) The 49ers had reason to give thanks Thursday: their full complement of wideouts were catching passes at practice, including Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham. Crabtree looks on pace to make his season debut Sunday when the 49ers (7-4) host the St. Louis Rams (5-6). Manningham missed Wednesday’s session to rest his surgically repaired left [...]

Brown returns to light work; Brock has chance to retain job

Cornerback Tarell Brown, who sustained an unspecified ribs injury against the New Orleans Saints on Nov. 17, returned to the practice field Thursday for some light work with his teammates. Brown was not in uniform but he went through some individual work, which included back-pedaling and catching passes with the other 49ers defensive backs for about 10 minutes. He appeared to be in some discomfort while going through the slow-paced drills. When the 49ers began practice, Brown walked to the team’s weight room for some conditioning work. Brown is not likely to play Sunday against the St. Louis Rams. Cornerback Tramaine Brock is slated to get his second start of the season.

Harbaugh on tight end Vance McDonald: a work in progress

Struggle? It’s a word that isn’t in Jim Harbaugh’s vocabulary, especially as it pertains to one of his players. Harbaugh rarely criticizes a 49er. Instead he prefers to lavish them with praise. Which is why Harbaugh’s thoughts on rookie Vance …

Good news, bad news: Crabtree practices in full, Manningham misses practice

The name “Michael Crabtree” was nowhere to be seen on the 49ers’ injury/practice participation report today, and that’s a good sign the 49ers receiver will make his 2013 debut Sunday against the Rams. Though he was permitted to practice with …

Upon further review, Justin Smith credited with two sacks

Defensive lineman Justin Smith picked up two quarterback sacks on Wednesday -- two days after the fact. Smith was erroneously not given credit for sacks on two tackles of scrambling Washington quarterback Robert Griffin in the 49ers' 27-6 victory on Monday night. The official statistics were corrected to reflect Smith’s pass-rush numbers after the Elias Sports Bureau reviewed the plays.

Brooks, Whitner want expanded use of replay after appealing their controversial hits

As Donte Whitner prepares for the 49ers’ rematch Sunday with the St. Louis Rams, he can’t help but think about controversial penalties. He got one last time against the Rams, a touchdown-saving hit that drew a $21,000 fine. Whitner claimed Wednesday he won his appeal, never had that money withdrawn from his paycheck and now [...]

Colin Kaepernick Q&A: ‘Yes’

Colin Kaepernick had his weekly meeting with the media today. Here’s what the 49ers quarterback had to say: Who’s been the biggest influence on your leadership style? CK: “My dad.” What has he taught you about leadership? CK: “You just have to be able to relate to people and know how to motivate them.” Any such thing as momentum or is it just game-to-game? CK: “Game-to-game. Have to win.” But yet, you still have to feel good. I mean it feels a lot better after a win going into the next week than it did, or maybe does that make you kind of have to dig down after a loss as opposed to a win? CK: “You’re just worried about the next game regardless if you win or lose.” Is chemistry with a receiver like riding a bike in the sense that do you think that when WR Michael Crabtree comes back, it’ll be you, could just pick up where you left off? CK: “I think he’s someone, he’s very easy to throw to. So, I don’t think that will take long.” Is that because, I know you’ve said in the past that he gets open, but is there more to it than that?

Recent Super Bowl history encouraging for Staley, 49ers

When it comes to reading up on the NFL, left tackle Joe Staley skips the what’s-wrong-with-the-49ers material that accompanies losing streaks. “We don’t really listen to what you guys say,” Staley said after a 27-6 win at Washington on Monday night. Staley, however, clearly reads up on his NFL history. The 49ers (7-4), who are [...]

49ers release QB Bethel-Thompson to make room for Crabtree

McLeod Bethel-Thompson, the 49ers’ fourth No. 3 quarterback since training camp, was released today to make room for wide receiver Michael Crabtree on the roster. On Monday, of course, Jim Harbaugh said Crabtree would be moved from the physically unable to perform list to the 53-man roster today.

Many happy returns: James thrilled he’s no longer ‘cooped up’

After he performed a nifty pirouette along Washington’s sideline en route to a 40-yard punt return Monday night, running back LaMichael James flipped the ball high in the air to a nearby official and practically skipped across the field. Yes, after he was healthy scratch for three straight games earlier this season, James is rejoicing in his newfound relevance. “I’m an energetic player,” James said after the 49ers’ 27-6 win. “I don’t like to be cooped up. I play with a lot of energy. That’s when it’s fun. When I’m sitting on the sideline, that’s not fun. I want to be out there competing, and bringing life to the offense and defense. Just bringing good vibes. That’s the type of player I am.”

Ahmad Brooks on RG3: ‘He shouldn’t be playing’

Asked about RG3 after the 49ers' 27-6 win over the Redskins, Brooks said plainly that Griffin is still fighting a knee injury and shouldn't be playing.

Notes: Crabtree coming back, James sparks return game, Whitner notches only takeaway

Michael Crabtree didn’t make his season debut Monday night but the 49ers are expected to activate the wide receiver Tuesday, his final eligible day on the physically-unable-to-perform list. Coach Jim Harbaugh said after Monday’s 27-6 win over Washington that Crabtree is “coming back next week,” suggesting he might debut Sunday when they host the St. Louis Rams. Wide receiver Anquan Boldin said Crabtree doesn’t just add depth but that he’s “another play-maker on the outside, another dimension that we need.” Crabtree said he’s “alright” but doesn’t know what the 49ers have in store for him He tore his right Achilles on May 21 and returned to practice three weeks ago. He participated in a light workout before Monday’s game, running routes and catching passes in grey sweats.

Final: 49ers snap two-game skid thanks to punishing defense, revitalized Kaepernick

(UPDATED) It wasn’t just a hard-hitting defense that emphatically broke the 49ers’ two-game losing streak Monday night. Their passing game awoke from its slumber, with Colin Kaepernick producing three touchdown passes and a career-best passer rating to complement the 27-6 win over host Washington. “We didn’t sugarcoat it this week: we knew it was a [...]

Instant Replay: 49ers get back on track vs. Washington

The offensive inconsistencies that have plagued the 49ers for most of the season did not totally disappear against Washington’s 28th-ranked defense. The offense had its moments. But it also had its typical bouts of malaise, too. The 49ers’ offense fed off the defense and the passing game had enough moments to help pull away for a 27-6 rout over hapless Washington on Monday night at FedEx Field. The 49ers (7-4) remain in a battle with the Arizona Cardinals (7-4) for second place in the NFC West as well as the sixth spot in the NFC playoffs. The 49ers defeated the Cardinals earlier this season, and the clubs conclude the regular season against each other on Dec. 29 in Arizona.

Cold war: First subfreezing kickoff in forecast for Harbaugh’s 49ers

Safety Eric Reid greeted his Twitter followers Sunday morning with this weather report from the WashingtonD.C. area: “It’s so cold.” Indeed it is, setting up the 49ers’ coldest game in three seasons under coach Jim Harbaugh. Temperatures in the low 30s are expected at kickoff for Monday night’s game against the host Redskins in Landover, [...]

Redskins’ rushing attack could get 49ers primed for Seahawks

No one is confusing the floundering Washington Redskins with the NFC-leading Seattle Seahawks. But the 49ers could use Monday night’s trip to Washington to prepare their run defense for a potentially pivotal showdown with Seattle two weeks later. Not only do the Redskins boast the league’s top-ranked rushing attack, they employ some of the same features as the Seahawks, such as a zone-blocking scheme and a mobile quarterback. “When the quarterback is under center, there are some similarities,” 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said.

Harbaugh won’t rule out Crabtree; Iupati, Brown won’t play Monday

In what is probably a case of keep-the-opponent guessing, Jim Harbaugh left the window open a crack for wide receiver Michael Crabtree to make his 2013 debut on Monday night at Washington. Harbaugh said the 49ers would decide whether to add Crabtree to the 53-man roster over the next 48 hours, but it’s likely the decision has already been made to keep Crabtree sidelined. Crabtree, who is six months removed from tearing his Achilles, did not practice last week. On Thursday and Friday, he had extended warm-ups periods with a strength coach before joining his teammates for practice. On Friday, offensive coordinator Greg Roman was asked if Crabtree was able to make sharps cuts in practice. Roman’s vague response didn’t suggest Crabtree was game-ready. “He’s practicing. I think that’s in the eye of the beholder and can be interpreted or spun a lot of different ways,” Roman said. “But he’s out there practicing, trying to make progress and working day-to-day.”

Source: CB Brock signs four-year, $16 million extension

Less than four years after Tramaine Brock received a $500 signing bonus from the 49ers, the former undrafted free-agent cornerback from Belhaven College has struck it rich. Brock, 25, signed a four-year, $16 million contract extension with $7 million guaranteed today, a league source confirmed, in a move that suggests he’ll assume a starting spot [...]

Roman on Kaepernick: “He’s definitely a player that is ascending. We’re definitely excited about having him as our QB.”

SANTA CLARA — Greg Roman spoke in the media tent Friday afternoon. Here is a transcript.

Q: How much did the Saints overextend themselves to stop your running game?

ROMAN: They did definitely made a heavy investment in it, and we pretty much forecasted that. It was definitely an extreme investment on their part. We felt that they would do that. They mixed it up, though, throughout the game. It wasn’t an every-play thing. It was basically a 9-man front quite a bit.

Q: Why haven’t you been able to exploit that in the passing game.

ROMAN: I think it’s a function of making a few more plays. You look at that game, we make one or two more plays, we win the game. The week before, we make one or two more plays, we win the game. We’re always striving for improvement. We’re certainly not a finished product. I think those opportunities are out there and the roof is going to blow off. It’s going to pop. It’s coming if we keep working like we’re working. It will come.

Q: You’ve had fewer than 200 yards of offense the past two games. Does that surprise you?

ROMAN: I’d say the past few weeks have not been up to our standard or the standard of production we expect and work for. It’s simply a function of getting back to work, identifying problems, fixing those problems and reemphasizing the positive things. You can go back at the New Orleans game last week and I’d say there were some incredibly positive things – great throws, great catches, great plays made – even moreso than some games we’ve won. Overall though, the past couple of weeks have been grinders. We’ve got to make a few more plays. That’s what we’re working to do.”

Q: Colin Kaepernick is taking some criticism. How much of that is fair?

ROMAN: I don’t pay attention. I don’t think anybody really pays attention to what’s being said or perceived or where people are placing blame, etc. We look at it as an offense, each individual player, and we understand it takes 11 guys to make it work. Whatever is being said outside really doesn’t factor in. I’d say he did a lot of really good things in that game. There are a couple of plays I’m sure he’d like to have back, but there always is. It’s something that’s going to keep on improving as we keep on working. I love his attitude. I love his interaction with his teammates. Like I said, it’s going to keep improving. It’s going to pop here soon.

Q: These past few weeks, has he spent extra time studying film, extra time talking to you, extra time on the field?

ROMAN: Yes. The answer is vehemently yes. Colin works extremely hard. He’s an early riser. He spends a lot of time studying film. We have iPads now, so he’s always on his iPad studying film, interacting with us. He’s got an A+ work ethic. And communication flow is very good.

GC: Kaepernick’s stats are down across the board from last season, as I’m sure you know – passer rating, completion percentage, touchdown percentage, yards per attempt, etc. Why?

ROMAN: I don’t think looking at the stats – we’re not chasing stats, but in general it’s never just one thing, good or bad. Colin is doing a lot of really good things well. Those things aren’t necessarily reflected in the stats, especially the past couple weeks. He’s definitely a player that is ascending. We’re definitely excited about having him as our quarterback.

GC: How specifically is Kaepernick ascending? It seems like he’s in a slump.

ROMAN: Understanding the game, understanding of his job – again, these things aren’t reflected this week as we stand here right now. As far as his development as a quarterback, this is incredibly valuable for him to go through these types of situations, battle his way out and learn from them. To play quarterback in this league is a tall task. Over time, there are so many different things you’ll encounter, so many different players you’ll play with, all of those different things that contribute to your growth as a quarterback, your recognition skills, understanding where the weaknesses in defenses are, how guys match up, protection schemes, run schemes, all the different things on his plate. And that’s just part of a quarterback’s development. This is a very opportunistic time for him to learn and get better from.

Q: You said Carolina is a line-up-and-do-what-they-do defense. From an offensive standpoint, how much of a line-up-and-do-what-we-do offense are you guys and how much do you tweak what you do based on the team you’re facing, or in the case of Colin getting multiple plays in the huddle and changing at the line of scrimmage – what do you strive for?

ROMAN: We strive for production and winning. We’ll do whatever we think is best, puts us in the best situation to win. Sometimes it’s line up and do what you do. Sometimes it’s uptempo. Sometimes it’s we need to make sure that we’ve got this covered, do you want to run the ball into a safety blitz? If there’s a bad play, we might need to get out of it, that type of thing. But all those things are different week to week and our guys do a great job assimilating them and understanding what we’re trying to get done and working on them and working together and executing them.

Young wonders if Kaepernick reason for 49ers’ offensive illness

Was Trent Dilfer right? On the heels of Colin Kaepernick’s second straight forgettable performance, another former 49ers quarterback working as an ESPN analyst, Steve Young, isn’t dismissing his colleague’s analysis. Last week, of course, Dilfer made a few headlines when he said Kaepernick becomes a “remedial” passer when his first pass-receiving option is covered. In searching for reasons why the 49ers have averaged 173.5 yards in their past two games, Young didn’t rule out Kaepernick’s lack of sophistication at the position as a potential issue.

Notes: Iupati, Brown out; Crabtree update; Dixon speaks (sort of)

As expected, left guard Mike Iupati and cornerback Tarell Brown will not play at Washington on Monday night after they were injured in last week’s loss to the Saints. Iupati, who sustained an MCL sprain, confirmed he will miss the first start of his four-year career. Iupati, who has started 58 consecutive games, was wearing a bulky brace on his left leg that extended to his lower ankle and needed a teammate’s help putting a sock on his left foot. Iupati will likely be replaced by Adam Snyder, a nine-year veteran with 83 career starts.

Snyder vows to not hold back offensive line if he replaces Iupati

With left guard Mike Iupati seen walking uncomfortably in a super-sized knee brace, Adam Snyder is poised to start at left guard in the 49ers’ game Monday night at Washington. “The four other (linemen) are All-Pro guys. I’m expecting to come in and not have any drop off in production,” said Snyder, a ninth-year veteran. [...]

Lattimore heads to practice on what he calls ‘a special day for me’

Marcus Lattimore beamed with pride and excitement inside the 49ers locker room Thursday as he prepared to put on shoulder pads for the first practice of his rookie season. A year ago, Lattimore thought he’d never play again, after tearing all major ligaments in his right knee during South Carolina’s Oct. 27 game at Tennessee. Recalling that painful day, Lattimore said: “I thought I had to find something else to do. I’d seen my knee and what happened, and there was no way I was coming back from that.”

Brooks hopes league will ‘hear me out’ regarding what he maintains was ‘clean hit’

Ahmad Brooks still insists his hit on Saints quarterback Drew Brees was “clean,” and the 49ers outside linebacker plans to state his case further next Tuesday when he appeals the $15,750 fine. “Hopefully they’ll hear me out, because I didn’t intentionally mean to knock him out like that, but that’s part of the game,” Brooks [...]

Kaepernick: “I don’t think there is any concern on this team.”

SANTA CLARA — Colin Kaepernick answered questions in the locker room Thursday afternoon. Here is a transcript.

Q: The deep passing game hasn’t been effective the past two games. Why hasn’t that come through?

KAEPERNICK: It’s a variety of things, whether it is how the defense is playing us or we’re just not hitting things. There is a lot of things that can go into that.

Q: Did the Saints do anything special against Vernon Davis?

KAEPERNICK: They just gave him looks that weren’t going to allow him to get down the field.

Q: You’ve said there is a lot on your plate. Have their been discussions to streamline that a little bit maybe?

KAEPERNICK: That’s not my call. We’re going out and executing the plays that are called.

Q: What do you mean by a lot on your plate?

KAEPERNICK: There are a lot of things this offense asks of us. It’s expected of us.

Q: As far as volume?

KAEPERNICK: Yes.

Q: You’ve thrown a lot to Anquan Boldin. You’ve thrown a lot to Davis. Where are you in terms of your chemistry with other pass catchers? Are you not as comfortable passing to them?

KAEPERNICK: I wouldn’t say not as comfortable. Vernon and Anquan have played in this league for a long time for a reason. They make plays down the field and they get open. Any time we have the opportunity to get it in their hands, we’re going to.

Q: How does Michael Crabtree look and how ready do you think he is to get back in the mix?

KAEPERNICK: You would have to ask him. That’s going to be 100 percent his call.

Q: What is your perception of how he looks?

KAEPERNICK: I don’t see him too much. He’s training.

Q: You ran the ball a lot last year. Is that something you’d like to be doing more now?

KAEPERNICK: I do whatever this offense asks.

Q: With all the turnover you’ve had at receiver, what has that challenge been like for you?

KAEPERNICK: It’s something you have to deal with. You make it work with whatever personnel is on the field whether it is five wide receivers or three tight ends and two backs. You make it work.

Q: Is there any concern about your ability to execute against the top level defenses?

KAEPERNICK: I don’t think there is any concern on this team.

Harbaugh says he hasn’t gotten out-schemed the past two games and Kaepernick is doing “a heck of a job.”

SANTA CLARA — Jim Harbaugh spoke in the media tent Thursday afternoon. Here is a transcript.

Q: How is Tarell Brown doing?

HARBAUGH: Good. Walking around and getting better every day.

Q: Did he have cracked ribs?

HARBAUGH: He’s working through something. I wouldn’t call them cracked ribs. I’m not going to define it. He’s got an issue he’s working through. It’s going to take him a little bit of time.

Q: It’s not an IR-caliber issue?

HARBAUGH: Doesn’t look like it, no.

Q: Same with Mike Iupati?

HARBAUGH: Yes.

Q: Do you expect Iupati to miss Monday night?

HARBAUGH: We’ll see.

Q: Colin Kaepernick said there is a lot on his plate. Have you given any thought process to streamlining that process and simplifying it?

HARBAUGH: Yeah, given though to it every week, every game. I give great amount of thought to the game plan.

Q: Have you tweaked it this season?

HARBAUGH: Yeah, there are different game plans for different games. There hasn’t been the same game plan each week.

Q: As the guy relaying the calls in, do you notice the calls getting in a little later recently?

HARBAUGH: Not to have a stopwatch on it, we’ve given a lot of thought to it and we’ll do a real good job, do a better job.

Q: Does he have any say in it? After the game he said that is up to the coaches.

HARBAUGH: He probably doesn’t really want to talk about scheme and the layers to it and what goes into it from a coaching and players standpoint, and I don’t have a great desire to talk about it outside of our meeting rooms, either.

Q: In the Carolina game, your longest pass play was 14 yards. In the Saints game, it was 17 yards – not big plays. Do you see that as a problem this year?

HARBAUGH: I wouldn’t call it a season-long issue. We didn’t have any big-hitters in the last game. Our longest play was 24 yards. You’re always striving for big chunks when you can get them.

Q: Frank Gore mentioned the past two opponents have had good defensive schemes. Have you guys been out-schemed?

HARBAUGH: No, I wouldn’t say that.

Q: Do you expect Michael Crabtree to be on the practice field participating in team drills this week?

HARBAUGH: Yes.

Q: What determines what you decide to do from there?

HARBAUGH: Practice.

Q: He goes up to the 53-man roster next Tuesday?

HARBAUGH: We’ll make that decision based on how he looks in practice.

Q: He could come back sooner than next Tuesday, right?

HARBAUGH: Sooner could be possible, yes.

Q: Last year before the playoff game against Green Bay, you mentioned Kaepernick had a laser focus and he was really on the game plan. Have you noticed that with him recently?

HARBAUGH: Yes, it’s been consistently good. He’s been like that every week he’s been backup or starter.

Q: How has his demeanor been?

HARBAUGH: Colin’s always been A+ in that way.

Q: I know you’re not going to criticize one of your players, but fans look at Colin’s performance the last two weeks and they look at the stats and a lot of people are puzzled considering the year he had last year. He has struggled and the offense has struggled. What is your response to people saying, “What’s wrong with Colin?”

HARBAUGH: I think he’s doing a heck of a job. I’d be puzzled why people would think that. What’s most important is what we see. I’d be puzzled why you or anyone else would think that.

Why second-round pick Carradine is not ready

Second-round pick Tank Carradine has been on the 49ers’ 53-man roster for two games. The defensive lineman has been inactive for both games. Carradine is one year removed from the knee injury that ended his final season at Florida State. While working to get himself ready to play physically, Carradine is also continuing to transition to a different role on the 49ers’ defense. General manager Trent Baalke recently talked about the challenges that Carradine faces

Gore surprised at close losses; Rogers balances frustration; Brooks doesn’t comment

Frank Gore has gone through his share of losing streaks in nine seasons with the 49ers, and their lastest one has him scratching his head. “I’m very surprised we lost the last two like that: close games,” Gore said Wednesday. The 49ers (6-4) are coming off losses to the Carolina Panthers (10-9) and New Orleans [...]

Brooks fined $15,750 for hit on Brees

The NFL fined 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks $15,750 for his controversial hit on New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees on Sunday that resulted in a game-changing penalty. Dean Blandino, the NFL's vice president of officiating, said on Tuesday that referee Tony Corrente made the correct call on the play that nullified a late-game fumble and Patrick Willis' potential game-changing recovery.

Shanahan: Kaepernick has bright future

There is no question that quarterbacks Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin are two exceptionally gifted football talents. Both blasted their ways onto the NFL scene a year ago. And both have struggled this season heading into the 49ers’ game at Washington on Monday night.

Widespread reasons for 49ers’ offensive woes

The 49ers looked as if they were ready to become a top-five offense in the league when the season began. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick proved to be a dynamic threat during his 10 starts last season, which included a 302-yard passing performance in the Super Bowl. And he opened with a career-best 412 yards passing in a Week 1 victory against the Green Bay Packers. Instead, the offense has gone in reverse. And it has been particularly dreadful in the 49ers’ four losses. The 49ers’ passing game ranks last in the NFL with a lowly 168.0 net average yards per game.

Saints successfully dared Kaepernick to beat them

The 49ers guessed right. And it still went all wrong. Before Sunday’s 23-20 loss at New Orleans, the Niners’ offensive brain trust devised a pass-heavy game plan. The thinking: The Saints, ranked 23rd against the run, would commit serious resources to stopping Frank Gore and the NFL’s fourth-ranked rushing attack. Such a plan should have [...]

Anger rides high for the 49ers and their fans, even two days after Ahmad Brooks game-sealing, sack-fumble was deemed a personal foul. The 49ers were robbed of a turnover, and a quality road win over the seemingly playoff-bound Saints. Yet this 23-20 loss might have been avoided if 49ers coaches realized the game has changed and coached to those changes. Last year, former safety Dashon Goldson was fined twice for illegal hits, including one against former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez in late December. That’s when the coaches should have started instructing their defensive players to lower their target when hitting a ball carrier. Instead, the 49ers continue to fume about how Brooks’ strike to Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees’ Adams apple should have been legal. However, If Brooks had aimed for Brees’ ribs rather than his throat, the 49ers would have probably won the game. Instead of blaming referees, the NFL, and “watered down” football, fans would be hailing the 49ers as a tough customer that subdued New Orleans’ explosive offense in their own house.

Iupati’s knee sprain likely brings Snyder into lineup, or Kilgore

If Adam Snyder replaces Mike Iupati because of a sprained knee for the coming weeks, the 49ers better hope pass-protection issues don’t flare up like they did to start their final drive Sunday. Snyder got beat on a twist by Saints defensive end Junior Galette en route to a 9-yard, first-down sack of Colin Kaepernick [...]

Lattimore cleared to practice for 21-day period

Marcus Lattimore is likely to see limited time in practices over the next three weeks -- but then he'll placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Harbaugh defends Brooks’ hit on Brees

Here is Jim Harbaugh’s question-answer session from today’s press conference (transcript courtesy of 49ers as I’m still traveling back to NorCal): Did you get to take a closer look at the LB Ahmad Brooks hit? And if you did, what are your thoughts on it today? “I think the thoughts that everybody has with their own individual eyes. Do you need my opinion on it?” Are you saying that own individual eyes that there can be a lot of different interpretations of it? “Our interpretation was, when we grade a player, if he’s got a penalty we give him a minus, but we did not assign a minus on that play. That’s our interpretation.”

Harbaugh still upset by penalty call on Ahmad Brooks

This wasn’t an animated, wide-eyed protest — a la his sideline demeanor Sunday in New Orleans — but Harbaugh made his feelings clear during today’s weekly news conference in Santa Clara. Even after video review, he strongly disagreed with the personal-foul penalty assessed to linebacker Ahmad Brooks after his crunching, fumble-causing hit on Saints quarterback Drew Brees. Patrick Willis recovered the fumble, momentarily giving the 49ers hope they had sealed a 20-17 win. Instead, the penalty gave New Orleans a first down and fresh life, and the Saints went on to win 23-20. “Our interpretation is we give a player a ‘minus’ on a penalty,” Harbaugh said, referring to the coaches’ video review of a game. “And we didn’t give Brooks a minus on this one. I think he made a great play and didn’t get the result.”
