What makes Mangini qualified to coach 49ers tight ends?

Eric Mangini, a former small-college nose tackle with a background as a defensive coach, is qualified to be the 49ers’ tight ends coach because, quite simply, he’s a football coach, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. “He’s a foot-ball coach,” said Harbaugh, sounding out every syllable Thursday at the NFL Scouting Combine. Mangini replaces former NFL tight end Reggie Davis, who moves into a 49ers coaching role on the offensive line, where he will work with longtime NFL offensive line coach Mike Solari.

Eric Mangini will be 49ers tight ends coach

After spending his first season with the 49ers a senior offensive consultant, Mangini, 43, will become the tight ends coach in 2014. Tight ends coach Reggie Davis will become the co-offensive line coach with Mike Solari. Davis will assume the spot vacated by Tim Drevno, who was hired as USC’s offensive line coach.

Harbaugh: Anquan Boldin negotiations “going in a positive direction.”

INDIANAPOLIS — The 49ers coaching staff sent a strong signal they wanted receiver Anquan Boldin back in 2014 when they voted him the team’s MVP. Today, Jim Harbaugh articulated…

Carradine undergoes knee procedure, Harbaugh optimistic

Shortly after the season, Tank Carradine had a mass of scar tissue removed from his right knee. And Jim Harbaugh says expectations for the second round pick will be very high.

Roman’s formula for beating Seahawks screams for more speed

Roman spelled them out earlier this month in an interview with 97.3 ESPN in Atlantic City: “Here’s the formula for beating them: You can’t turn the ball over and you’ve got to create some big plays in the run or pass game.”

49ers need speed more than size from wide receiver

Assuming the 49ers re-sign Anquan Boldin, they'll have two physical, but slower, options. That means they'll be looking for a burner in the draft.

49ers free agent strategy: Can’t make everybody happy

Colin Kaepernick, Michael Crabtree, Mike Iupati and Aldon Smith will all need new contracts. Trent Baalke and Jim Harbaugh have prioritizing to do.

A glimpse inside NaVorro Bowman’s rehabilitation

Usually a pro athlete's injury rehab takes place in private, which is why it’s surprising NaVorro Bowman’s girlfriend is posting daily videos of it.

Let there be light: Thoughts on the 49ers’ new stadium

When 49ers first unveiled plans for their new, 69,000-seat stadium, they said the goal was to pay homage to area’s mild weather and abundant sunshine with an open, airy stadium.…

49ers devote big-money deals to their own

The 49ers have been reluctant in recent seasons to make big-money free-agent acquisitions and 2014 doesn't appear to be any different.

Harbaugh, Kaepernick, Boldin deals are priorities for 49ers

As the San Francisco 49ers try to get back to the Super Bowl and win it, they’ve got some offseason business to deal with.

49ers’ Williams hopes to be ready for training camp

According to the 49ers' official website, nose tackle Ian Williams hopes to be ready for the start of training camp in July.

‘Dead money’ does not kill 49ers’ salary cap

The 49ers have question marks, but one area they have under control is the amount of “dead money” set to count against the team’s 2014 cap.

Levi’s Stadium shaping up well for 49ers, whose home opener is expected to come in Week 2 on ‘SNF’

At 80 percent complete, Levi’s Stadium is approaching the cosmetic-touches stage, some seven months until the 49ers’ official home opener in what’s expected to be a Week 2 matchup on “Sunday Night Football.” “We’re right about where we expected to be,” project executive Jack Hill said Wednesday as he ushered select media on a stadium tour. Most of the heavy lifting appears done, and now it’s as if they’re putting lipstick on, well, a newly discovered supermodel.

Look ahead: One more year for the 49ers’ bell-cow runner

Over the next few weeks, I’ll take a position-by-position look at the 49ers roster with an eye on the upcoming season and beyond. Today we examine the situation at running back.

Ranking 49ers’ offseason needs

Team needs change from month to month, depending on injuries or the fact that some players improve or decline during the course of a year. And, certainly, every NFL team will see a shift in needs with free agency scheduled to open March 11 and the draft taking place from May 8 to 10. (Up until the start of free agency, every team has sole negotiating rights with their own scheduled free agents.) The 49ers own 11 draft picks and expect an additional compensatory pick at the end of either the third or fourth round.

Would the 49ers draft Michael Sam?

The 49ers probably would be one of the teams comfortable with drafting Missouri defensive end Michael Sam. A projected mid-round pick, Sam came out Sunday as the first draft-eligible player from a major football college to say he was gay. In a story for the Chronicle’s online magazine in 2012, I asked several 49ers players [...]

Odd man out? Several factors could block extension for Iupati

Andy Levitre is a left guard for the Tennessee Titans. Andy Levitre hasn’t earned All-Pro or Pro Bowl honors in his five-year career. Andy Levitre signed a six-year, $46.8 million contract with $13 million guaranteed last year. Andy Levitre is one reason it might be difficult for the 49ers to sign left guard Mike Iupati to a contract extension. Iupati, of course, is one of four prominent Niners who are entering the final year of their contract in 2014. The No. 17 pick in the 2010 draft, Iupati was a first-team All-Pro in 2012 who has earned Pro Bowl honors the past two seasons. Iupati is generally regarded as superior to Levitre, meaning his agent will likely contend he merits a superior contract. That would mean an asking price of somewhere north of $8 million a season. If, indeed, that’s an accurate ballpark figure, here’s a few reasons why it’s hard to envision the 49ers making an extension for Iupati an offseason priority:

49ers’ Roman on being head coach: ‘The time will come’

Despite his clear desire to be a head coach, Greg Roman will return as the 49ers offensive coordinator for a fourth season in 2014. During the playoffs, Roman reportedly interviewed for the Penn State opening on Jan. 6 in Chicago, a day after the 49ers’ wild-card win at Green Bay. On Jan. 11, the day before a divisional-round win against Carolina, he interviewed for the Vikings opening in Charlotte. He was reportedly a candidate for another NFL opening in Washington, but never interviewed for the job.

Key to keeping a staff together: Keep winning

There have been 22 NFL coaches hired over the past three seasons. And each year there was speculation that some of those teams might seek an assistant on Jim Harbaugh’s staff to take over as head coach. The 49ers advanced deep into the NFC playoffs each of those three seasons, yet Harbaugh's staff has remained intact. In 2012, assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Brad Seely interviewed with the Indianapolis Colts. This year, offensive coordinator Greg Roman and defensive line coach Jim Tomsula interviewed with the Minnesota Vikings.

Two starting jobs unsettled on 49ers’ defense

Twenty of the 53 players on the 49ers’ roster for the Super Bowl a year ago did not make the team’s roster for the 2013 season. The 49ers replaced two starters on both sides of the ball while keeping a constant churn of key backups, role players and players who regularly found themselves among the seven inactives on game days. The 49ers’ defense heads into the offseason with a starting front seven that appears set.

Super Bowl observations … with a 49ers twist

A lot of comments on social media during the Super Bowl noted that it was a throwback to the 1980s and 90s when the games were routinely blowouts. Back…

What 49ers must do to overtake Seahawks

Now, there can be little doubt the two best teams in the NFL met two weeks ago in Seattle for the NFC Championship game. The 49ers and Seahawks split their two regular-season meetings. Each team won on its home field. And a late-game interception in the end zone in the NFC title game clinched Seattle’s trip to Super Bowl XLVIII with a 23-17 victory.

49ers Mailbag: Kap’s workouts, Harbaugh’s contract

Where will Colin Kaepernick work out this offseason? What's the status of Jim Harbaugh's contract situation? Matt Maiocco has the answers.

Kaepernick thinks timeout cost 49ers Super Bowl XLVII

Kaepernick said in a recent Bill Simmons podcast that he thinks he would have run for a game-winning touchdown had coach Jim Harbaugh not called a timeout. “There was one play we had that we had called a timeout on that I think would have walked in, and the play clock was running down so we called a timeout,” Kaepernick said. Kaepernick went on to say that he thinks if Harbaugh did not call the timeout, he would have gotten the play off in time. “It would have been close, but I think we might have been able to get that play off,” Kaepernick said.

Goodell: More playoff teams, new replay procedures

If Commissioner Roger Goodell gets his way, change could be coming to the NFL. Adding playoff teams. Monitoring instant replay from league headquarters. Possibly creating a set of guidelines to prevent locker-room bullying.

Report: Niners OL Kilgore arrested for public intoxication

Niners reserve offensive lineman Daniel Kilgore, who is expected to contend to be the team’s starting center in 2014, was arrested and charged with public intoxication in his hometown of Kingsport, Tenn., on Sunday, the Kingsport Times-News reported.

Kaepernick explains why he runs more in playoffs

It was obvious after taking over as the 49ers’ starting quarterback that Colin Kaepernick turned into more a running threat in the postseason. On Thursday, he revealed what everybody had already figured: The 49ers enact a regular-season plan to limit the number of opportunities defenses have to hit their quarterback. “Some of it is game-plan specific, as far as you have 16 weeks during the regular season that you might not want to take all those hits,” Kaepernick said on an appearance on San Francisco radio station KNBR while at activities surrounding Super Bowl XLVIII.

A look at the 49ers’ 2014 cap situation

Carlos Rogers is slated to become the 49ers' highest paid player next year. With a salary cap to consider, the team has a decision to make.

49ers name Casson chief revenue officer

The 49ers on Wednesday announced Ethan Casson has been promoted to the organization’s chief revenue officer. Casson helped lead the stadium naming rights project -- a 20-year, $220 million partnership with Levi Strauss & Co. for the Santa Clara stadium, which is scheduled to open for the 2014 season. “Under Ethan's direction, our sales initiatives have produced tremendous returns at the team level and at Levi’s Stadium,” 49ers president Paraag Marathe said in a statement. “His sales group has constructed a world-class roster of corporate partners consisting of global industry leaders and the Bay Area's finest. I am confident in Ethan's ability to help our organization continue to grow while providing our fans an unparalleled experience.”

Playing time: D-line rotation meant more rest for J. Smith

Justin Smith played nearly three-quarters of all 49ers defensive snaps in 2013, a dramatic decrease in playing time from previous seasons.

Colin Kaepernick – Should he have thrown that final pass to Michael Crabtree?

Should he or shouldn’t he? That’s the question emerging from the fateful final throw of the 2013 season by quarterback Colin Kaepernick. We all know what happened. Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman tipped the pass, linebacker Malcolm Smith intercepted and the 49ers were denied another Super Bowl title for the third straight season under head coach [...]

Gore carried the load more than ever

The 49ers did not employ a running-backs-by-committee approach in 2013. In fact, the 49ers relied on veteran running back Frank Gore more than ever. In Gore’s first season at the age of 30, he played more than 75 percent of the 49ers’ offensive snaps during the regular season. Gore rushed for 1,128 yards and nine touchdowns, but he was equally valuable to the 49ers as a blocker in passing situations.

Look ahead: Questions at 49ers’ best position, inside linebacker

McDonald chalks up rookie season to learning experience

Vance McDonald joined the 49ers as a heralded NCAA pass catcher, but the big-bodied tight end filled a very different role as an NFL rookie.

49ers lose another assistant to college ranks

Peter Hansen, a 49ers defensive assistant the past three seasons, became the third member of the staff to leave for a promotion in the college ranks. Stanford coach David Shaw hired Hansen to become the Cardinal’s inside linebackers coach, the school announced on Monday. Hansen worked primarily with outside linebackers during his time with the 49ers. He spent the 2009 and 2010 seasons as a defensive assistant at Stanford, where he worked closely with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Hansen followed Fangio and Jim Harbaugh to the 49ers in 2011. “Pete comes to us at a young age but with a tremendous wealth of knowledge,” Shaw said in a statement. “In the last three years, he’s worked with one of the best defenses in the NFL and worked with some of the best linebackers in the NFL. His perspective and energy will help our front seven.”

Boldin, Dawson top candidates for deals before free agency

Before anybody talks about draft needs, it’s far more accurate to discuss “offseason needs.” The 49ers have exclusive negotiating rights until March 8 with each of their scheduled free agents. The draft is a full two months later. So we can talk all about draft needs right now, but things will change in the 3 ½ months before the draft gets going.

Seahawks’ Thomas on Kaepernick: ‘That’s a special player right there’

Colin Kaepernick got the choke sign from Richard Sherman, but he received something far different from the other first-team All-Pro in Seattle’s secondary: respect.

49ers offseason injury updates

All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman has yet to undergo surgery to repair the torn ACL in his left knee. Bowman also sustained damage to the MCL (medial collateral ligament), which will not require surgery. However, the ACL surgery cannot take place until the MCL has had some time to heal and the inflammation to subside. Coach Jim Harbaugh last week said the ACL surgery would take place in two or three weeks.

Look ahead: Transition year on the 49ers’ defensive line

Over the next few weeks, I’ll take a position-by-position look at the 49ers roster with an eye on the upcoming season and beyond. We’ll start with the defensive line and work our way backward:…

Colin Kaepernick: Is it essential to sign him now?

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh wants to win in free agency and “fight” for his players. It’s a wonderful notion and a laudable sentiment, but ultimately an empty pursuit. Signing players and setting the roster is not up to Harbaugh; that’s general manager Trent Baalke’s job along with team president Paraag Marathe. Harbaugh can be a [...]

Patrick Willis appears to have undergone a procedure on his left hand or thumb, according to a photo posted by the 49ers' linebacker on Instagram.

Demaryius Thomas wants Richard Sherman to cover him in SB

Broncos receiver Demaryius Thomas is looking for a challenge and hopes Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman covers him in the Super Bowl.

Changes expected in 49ers secondary

Safety Eric Reid will be a starter next season in the 49ers’ secondary. Cornerback Tramaine Brock is also expected to start. Beyond that, the 49ers head into the offseason with uncertainty at their other two starting positions in the defensive backfield, as well as the team’s third cornerback – a role that plays about half of the team’s snaps. Safety Donte Whitner and cornerback Tarell Brown are scheduled for unrestricted free agency. And cornerback Carlos Rogers does not figure to be back at his scheduled $6.6 million price tag.
