Gabbert in ideal spot, but Harbaugh hasn’t been flawless

A hopeless case, right? Well, if you squint you can begin to see why the 49ers have some reason for hope, if not optimism. For starters, Gabbert isn’t the only highly drafted quarterback whose early trajectory was historically awful.

Brown tops list of 49ers remaining free agents

When free agency began at 1:00 on Tuesday, the 49ers had nine unrestricted free agents. Only one has signed with another team...

49ers on hand to watch speedy Wyoming wideout

We step away from FA Watch to note that the 49ers had a scout at Wyoming’s pro day today. The featured attraction was a wide receiver, Robert Herron, who reportedly ran his 40-yard dash in the 4.3-second range. That’s an …

Bethea counts $3 million against 49ers’ salary cap

Newly signed 49ers safety Antoine Bethea’s four-year, $21 million contract will count $3 million against the team’s salary cap this season, a source told CSNBayArea.com. Bethea, who spent his first eight NFL seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, received a $5 million signing bonus and his entire $1.25 million base salary for 2014 is guaranteed. He is also in line to collect $400,000 every season in per-game roster bonuses of $25,000 for every game in which he is on the active 46-man roster. Bethea can also make $100,000 every season in workout bonuses. He said on Wednesday that he plans to take part in the 49ers' offseason program, which opens April 21 at the team's practice facility in Santa Clara.

49ers look into wide receiver market

The 49ers might have their presumptive starting wide receivers already under contract, but they appear to be in the market for more. With five draft picks in the top 94, the 49ers are expected to add to their stable of wideouts during the May 8-10 selection period. And the team showed interest in free agent Golden Tate, he said Wednesday on a Seattle radio show after signing with the Detroit Lions. The 49ers reached out to Tate, who explained to the KJR radio audience he could not do that to Seahawks fans. More than likely, he could not pass up the reported five-year, $31 million offer that the Lions made him.

Another reclamation project? CB Cook will reportedly visit 49ers

After trading for two disappointing high-end draft picks in Gabbert and Martin on Tuesday, the 49ers have their sights on another: Cook, a Vikings cornerback selected No. 34 overall in 2010, will pay a free-agent visit to the team Thursday, the Sacramento Bee reported.

Harbaugh on Martin: ‘Everybody deserves an Etch-A-Sketch opportunity … to start a new chapter’

Coach Jim Harbaugh hopes the 49ers’ acquisition of offensive tackle Jonathan Martin will be a “win-win” following Tuesday’s trade with the Miami Dolphins. Martin played under Harbaugh at Stanford before starting his NFL career with the Dolphins in 2012. Martin’s playing days with Miami came to a stunning end in late October when he left the team [...]

49ers find trade bargains in players with sinking stock

The 49ers filled two needs on the first day of the new league year with players whose stocks have fallen in the short time they've been in the NFL.

49ers keeping eye on Brown, other CBs

Cornerback Tarell Brown remains available and without any first-day-of-free-agency reports of interested suitors. On Tuesday, the 49ers re-signed kicker Phil Dawson, picked up safety Antoine Bethea to replace Donte Whitner, added potential backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert, and acquired Jonathan Martin, who’ll compete for a job as a backup offensive lineman. The 49ers also re-signed cornerback Eric Wright to a one-year contract. But the 49ers -- with Tramaine Brock and Chris Culliver already on board -- do not figure to be done addressing the cornerback position.

Tall order: 49ers interested in Vikings FA cornerback Chris Cook

It’s official. For the second straight year, the 49ers are in the market for tall, long-armed cornerbacks.

They’ve shown interest in 6-1 Dolphins free-agent Nolan Carroll, who is visiting the Bills today, as well as Vikings free agent Chris Cook. …

Bethea provides ‘smart, steady’ leadership in 49ers secondary

The 49ers’ sturdy defense relies on a basic principle: Do not allow the big play. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio generally prefers pressure on the quarterback to come from a four-man pass rush, rather than leave the team vulnerable in coverage with exotic blitz packages. The 49ers’ ability to supply heat with a four-man rush of Aldon Smith, Justin Smith, Ray McDonald and Ahmad Brooks has meshed well with a secondary that has been good about not allowing receivers to get over the top for long scoring plays. So when the 49ers knew they would likely lose veteran strong safety Donte Whitner to his hometown Cleveland Brows in free agency, they focused their attention on a replacement who had the qualities they value from the position.

Questions linger on how Martin will fit in locker room and depth chart

Early indications are that Jonathan Martin will be welcomed into a 49ers locker room that proclaims itself an equal-opportunity employer. But I am curious about how Martin literally will fit with the 49ers, both in the locker room and on the field. Again, I’m curious, not skeptical. Last season, the 49ers offensive linemen virtually isolated [...]

Bye-bye, Boobie? RB Dixon will visit Titans

It appears running back Anthony Dixon’s long-awaited opportunity could come in Tennessee. Dixon, who has 148 carries in his four-year career with the 49ers, will have a free-agent visit with the Titans on Wednesday morning, he said on Twitter. Dixon played at Mississippi State under head coach Sylvester Croom, who is Tennessee’s running backs coach. […]

CB Wright re-signs after debut season with hometown team

After parting ways with Carlos Rogers and Donte Whitner earlier today, the 49ers have retained a member of their 2013 secondary: cornerback Eric Wright. Wright, 28, a San Francisco native, posted a picture of a 49ers contract on his Instagram account. Terms of the deal haven’t been disclosed. With the release of Rogers, Wright is […]

Safety dance: 49ers to replace Whitner with Bethea

The 49ers are replacing a steady presence at safety with perhaps an even steadier one. The team has agreed to a deal with long-time Colts free agent Antoine Bethea,…

It’s good: K Dawson tweets his return to the 49ers

Evidently the 49ers have paid the man. Kicker Phil Dawson announced, via Twitter, that he’s re-signed with the 49ers after a stellar debut season with the team. Said Dawson: “Very excited & grateful for the opportunity to return to my team & be a part of chasing the quest for six! Go niners! #itsgood.” In […]

(Updated) Whitner flees for Browns, who last made playoffs his senior year at nearby Glenville High

As Donte Whitner left for his native Cleveland to help repair the Browns, the 49ers quickly replaced him with another veteran safety, Antoine Bethea. But that isn’t the only change in the 49ers’ shifting secondary. Carlos Rogers officially got released, joining three other 49ers cornerbacks who hit the free agent market Tuesday: Tarell Brown, Eric [...]

Carlos Rogers still with the 49ers… for now

Veteran cornerback Carlos Rogers might not be with the 49ers much longer, but the club did not officially release him on Monday, according to the NFL's official transaction wire. Rogers is expected to be released, according to an ESPN report. He is scheduled to earn $6.6 million in base salary and bonuses in 2014, a figure the 49ers were not willing to pay. The 49ers will clear $5.1 million in salary cap space with his expected release. The 49ers last offseason approached Rogers about accepting a pay cut. He declined and the move paid off in the short term. The 49ers had no choice but to hold into Rogers after Chris Culliver sustained a season-ending knee injury in training camp.

Whitner attracts attention from hometown Browns

On the eve of free agency, Cleveland native Donte Whitner is being seriously courted by his hometown team. The Cleveland Browns are reportedly “very serious” about signing Whitner, who would replace free-agent-to-be T.J. Ward. Whitner, the 49ers’ starting strong safety each of the past three seasons, has also received interest during the three-day “legal tampering” period from Chicago and the New York Jets, a source close to Whitner told cleveland.com.

Boldin’s $12 million deal counts just $2.364 million in first year

Wide receiver Anquan Boldin’s contract will count just $2.364 million against the 49ers’ 2014 salary cap, a source told CSNBayArea.com on Monday. Boldin actually signed a five-year contract through the 2018 season, but the deal voids to the widely reported two-year, $12 million contract. Boldin agreed to the contract extension last Tuesday, but it was not signed until Friday, the source said. Boldin received a $4.545 million signing bonus with a first-year guaranteed base salary of $955,000. He is scheduled to earn $5.5 million in base salary in 2015 with $3 million guaranteed. The deal includes $8.5 million in guarantees. During the 2014 and ’15 seasons, Boldin will earn $31,250 for every regular-season game he suits. Those per-game roster bonuses could total as much as $500,000 both seasons. Even if Boldin is not on the 49ers in 2016, he is still scheduled to count $2.727 million against team's salary cap that season.

Same old story: 49ers have habit of signing aging stars

The 49ers don’t sign big names in free agency? False. In the past two years, they’ve signed a slam-dunk, first-ballot Hall of Fame wide receiver, a two-time 1,000-yard running back and a three-time Pro Bowl cornerback. The more accurate statement: The 49ers don’t sign young big names in free agency. Since 2012, the 49ers have specialized in signing near-their-expiration-date standouts – Randy Moss (35 when 2012 season began), Brandon Jacobs (30) and Nnamdi Asomugha (32 when ’13 season began) – to team-friendly, one-year deals in hopes of squeezing out a last bit of magic.

The triple option on Colin Kaepernick’s contract

The first option with 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s contract is to let him play out the last year of his deal for about $1 million and then sign him next off-season to a whopping $20 million- to $22 million-a-year contract. The second option is to sign Kaepernick now, eliminate the final year and get him a little cheaper, say between $14 million- to 16 million-a-year. This is the far more preferable option – it allows Kaepernick to play for a robust contract next year, and with Kaepernick taking a lower bit of the overall salary cap, it could allow the 49ers the ability to sign other players. However, there’s one more option. Sign Kaepernick for a 2-year, $28 million to $30 million deal. This would allow the 49ers to assess Kaepernick’s development and let Kaepernick become a free agent when the salary cap stretches to $150 million per year (It was $123 million last season) in 2016.

49ers tender restricted free-agent Dobbs

Demarcus Dobbs carved out a nice role for himself last season with the 49ers, and on Friday the team made it clear they want to keep him around.

History lesson: 49ers could add free agent to compete with Kilgore

Alex Boone had Leonard Davis. Ian Williams had Glenn Dorsey. And Daniel Kilgore will have … ??? Last week, Kilgore a little-used backup in his first three seasons, signed a three-year contract extension worth a reported $5.4 million. That strongly suggests the 49ers view Kilgore as the heir apparent to center Jonathan Goodwin, 35, an […]

49ers, Tarell Brown still talking as free-agency period looms

The 49ers are not resigned to losing cornerback Tarell Brown in free agency and have had “ongoing conversations” about a new deal with Brown, according to a source familiar…

49ers meet with WR Mike Evans, who seems custom-built for the red zone

At the same time the NFL is starting to consider elongating – by a wide margin – the anticlimactic extra-point kick, the 49ers met with Texas A&M wide receiver Mike…

49ers could look to Seahawks corners in free agency

Tarell Brown remains unsigned. And Carlos Rogers’ contract places his return to the 49ers as anything but a sure thing, too. The 49ers figure to begin free agency with some holes at the cornerback position, but there are a lot of options on the open market, including two Seattle Seahawks. The best fit for the 49ers off the Super Bowl champs is Walter Thurmond, 26, who has the added bonus of being able to play the slot. However, Thurmond might attract a lot of attention and a hefty salary on the open market. Brandon Browner is eligible to sign with any team on Tuesday after announcing Tuesday he has been reinstated in a settlement with the NFL. The league suspended Browner in December for violating its substance-abuse policy and announced he'd be eligible to apply for reinstatement in one year.

49ers sign Boldin, don’t use franchise tag

Soon after the 49ers announced a two-year deal with Anquan Boldin, the deadline to place the franchise tag on scheduled free agents passed.

Rising cap strengthens Kaepernick’s market value

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s market value has only risen since the end of the season. That’s why, as reported during the NFL Scouting Combine, Kaepernick’s representation considers the “floor” for a contract extension to be $18 million annually. The Chicago Bears are paying Jay Cutler $54 million over the first three years of the deal he signed in early January. The 49ers know full well that the market has been set, and that’s why negotiations appear to be moving in a positive direction. Moreover, Dallas signed Tony Romo to an extension worth $18 million annually in April. And that deal was signed at a time when there were reports the NFL salary cap would remain “flat” until 2015.

Blink: Baalke says draft snap judgments usually correct

Which college players have caught Trent Baalke’s eye in the run-up to the draft? The notoriously tight-lipped 49ers general manager never would say. But he did reveal that it doesn’t take him long to decide who makes his draft-day list …

Proposed rule changes attract 49ers’ attention

Some of the 49ers’ management and ownership team will take part in NFL committee meetings that open Monday in Naples, Fla. CEO Jed York traveled a few days early to spend the weekend with his family in Florida before taking his role on the two different committees devoted to stadiums and digital media. The most noteworthy NFL group is the nine-member Competition Committee that discusses rules and presents the owners with a ballot of potential changes at the owners meeting. Green Bay Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy, a member of the Competition Committee, revealed the potential rules changes on his team’s official website. “Most of the potential rules changes are once again designed to make the game safer,” he wrote in his monthly column.

Should we care if Jim Harbaugh is wearing thin on players?

Radio talk show co-host on 95.7 The Game and Raiders play-by-play voice Greg Papa said it. The San Francisco Chronicle’s Ann Killion wrote it – players might not be liking 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh the way they once did. It confirms the rumblings I’ve heard over the last year or so. One source said […]

With NFL cap set, 49ers have $15 million of space

With the NFL salary cap set at $133 million for the 2014 season, the 49ers are almost exactly $15 million under the limit, according to NFLPA sources. The 49ers’ top 51 players – only the top 51 count against the cap until the final cuts before the start of the regular season – account for $120.175 million. And with the carryover credit of $2.175 million in cap space from last season, the 49ers have $118 million in salaries devoted to the upcoming season. That figure includes the new deal that center Daniel Kilgore signed on Thursday that bumps his salary-cap figure fro $685,000 to $1.022 million for the 2014.

Pay the man? The 49ers and K Phil Dawson

Asked in December about re-signing ultra-reliable, free-agent-to-be placekicker Phil Dawson, Jim Harbaugh memorably bellowed: “Pay the man!” Based on two transactions today, it appears Dawson could get paid a bit more than $2.25 million – his 2013 salary – in 2014.

Jed York admits he’s in Miami

Jed York confirmed on twitter that he did fly to Miami today, but Trent Baalke and Paraag Marathe did not go with him according to York. York apparently will attend an NFL meeting in Miami on Monday, although I do not know what the nature of that meeting will be. I can’t find anything about […]

Kilgore lands team’s first extension this offseason while others await their fate

While the 49ers weigh the long-term futures of Jim Harbaugh and Colin Kaepernick, the team’s first contract extension this offseason was awarded Friday Thursday to Daniel Kilgore, a potential successor to Jonathan Goodwin as the starting center. Kilgore, who’s never started a game in three seasons, received a three-year extension that runs through 2017. Goodwin, a [...]

49ers could be tempted by ‘Sherman-esque’ cornerback

The 49ers figure to be in the market for a CB this draft, and love him or hate him, the new prototype in the NFL is Richard Sherman.

Lattimore ready to take next step in recovery from knee injury

Running back Marcus Lattimore is progressing so well in his rehab from a devastating injury to his right knee that he expects to be a full participant in the 49ers offseason conditioning program. In fact, Lattimore said that his he is almost 100 percent healthy after spending the past 16 months or so recovering from [...]

Subbing for a star? Wilhoite aiming to spell Bowman in 2014

In Overland Park, Kan., 49ers reserve linebacker Michael Wilhoite, who assumed Bowman would miss far less time, digested the news. And went back to work.

Baalke makes no secret of his affinity for long arms

General manager Trent Baalke certainly does not like to give away any secrets when it comes to his evaluation of draft prospects. But Baalke has been upfront about his emphasis in the scouting process on a certain part of a player’s anatomy. “I like long arms,” Baalke said at the NFL Scouting Combine. “Last year’s draft should tell you that. Length’s important. It’s important in every sport.” Perhaps the most notable selection of the 49ers’ draft last year was their decision to trade back in the second round instead of selecting Stanford tight end Zach Ertz. Then, the 49ers chose Rice tight end Vance McDonald later in the second round.

Who benefits from the Harbaugh-to-Browns drama? Harbaugh, of course

The Harbaugh-to-Cleveland story has taken on a he said-she said-Browns said quality. The truth usually is in the middle. But in my mind, at least, it skews toward the 49ers’ side of the story. Here’s why:

Jed York said an …

49ers’ Davis courting MJD, should try recruiting his brother

Tight end Vernon Davis posted a photo on social media Monday of himself with a high-profile free-agent-to-be. And Davis intimated he was courting the player to sign with the 49ers. Yes, there is one player out there with ties to Davis who immediately comes to mind. He plays a position of need for the 49ers and everything.

Another one takes a cut: 49ers reduce Dahl’s salary

Dahl, who signed a three-year contract last year, is a candidate to compete for a starting spot if Donte Whitner, an unrestricted free agent, signs elsewhere next month. In 2013, Dahl played primarily on special teams. He logged 71 of his 89 defensive snaps when rookie Eric Reid exited two games early with a concussion.

Jim Harbaugh to Cleveland mess could have been minimized

The Jim-Harbaugh-trade-to-the-Browns story reveals that the 49ers can get caught in their policy of revealing as little as possible to the outside world. To review, Profootballtalk.com published a story Friday about 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh nixing a trade for draft picks between the 49ers and Browns for his services. Un-named sources are cited and then […]

Why Browns saw ‘opportunity’ to acquire Harbaugh

General manager Trent Baalke stood in the back of the meeting room as 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh spoke to his team the morning after the season-ending loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Harbaugh told the assembled players that he did not care what the front office planned for the offseason. He was going to fight hard to bring back everyone in the room. It was an awkward moment, a source told CSNBayArea.com. But it was not too different than some of Harbaugh’s public statements about retaining such players as Josh Morgan, Randy Moss and Dashon Goldson – none of whom was re-signed.

Jed York learns valuable lesson

The Jim Harbaugh/Jim Haslam BFFs Forever story has run its course . . . we think . . . for a moment anyway . . . except for one thing. Nothing is ever over with Jim Harbaugh. And maybe a couple of others. The contract negotiations will drag on awhile longer, and we suspect at some point Harbaugh, being the gambler he is, may just say, “Okay, we’ll wait this year, see how far we go, and then I want the works.” This is dangerous business, because nothing is more fired than a coach in the last year of his deal, but Harbaugh lives on the edge, and finds a way as often as not to put his supervisors and colleagues on it with him.

49ers ‘closing in’ on bringing back Boldin for 2014

The 49ers declared wide receiver Anquan Boldin priority No. 1 in terms of re-signing prospective free agents. They are close to getting Boldin back in the fold for 2014 and checking off that box. An ESPN report Sunday morning said that the 49ers are “closing in” on a deal with Boldin that will keep Boldin [...]

Baalke: LaMichael James will not be traded

Seldom-used running back LaMichael James did not found a role in the 49ers’ backfield in his first two seasons. And 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine that James is going nowhere in his third season. When asked if there has been any talk about trading James, Baalke answered, “No discussions. LaMichael is a 49er. He’ll continue to be a 49er.” James played in just four games in his rookie season after the 49ers selected him in the second round of the 2012 draft. He suited up for action only after backup Kendall Hunter’s season-ending Achilles injury and Brandon Jacobs failed to impress the coaches in the No. 2 role.

Culliver will compete for job at cornerback, not safety

With veteran Donte Whitner scheduled for free agency, the 49ers could find themselves in the market for a player to line up alongside starting safety Eric Reid. But that player will not be Chris Culliver, who earned second-team All-SEC honors at free safety in 2009 before moving to cornerback for his final season at South Carolina. Culliver was the 49ers’ third cornerback in each of his first two NFL years before missing all of last season due to a torn ACL. “There’s been absolutely no discussion relative to (moving Culliver to safety),” Baalke said Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine. “And I don’t know why we even would discuss it. We feel awfully good about him as a corner. It's a tough position to find. And when you find a good, young one, you keep him where he’s comfortable. And that’s where he’s most comfortable.”

Baalke on A.J. Jenkins: ‘Disappointed, obviously’

On Friday, CSNBayArea.com asked 49ers general manager Trent Baalke about the 49ers’ track record of selecting and developing young wide receivers. After all, the 49ers have chosen at least one wide receiver in each of the past 11 drafts. And they figure to select another this year. “First of all, you have to look at how many we’ve actually drafted,” Baalke said at the NFL Scouting Combine. “What is that number of players we’ve drafted at that position? And it hasn’t been a high count. “So we always go back to the A.J. Jenkins pick. Disappointed. Obviously. And that’s on me. That’s on nobody else.”
