The Monday after the Super Bowl, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick reported to Bommarito Performance Systems in Miami and got to some serious work.
Nobody has ever questioned Kaepernick’s work ethic. But a year ago at the NFL owners meetings, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said his quarterback ran the risk of becoming too big for his own good.
"If you're just talking about weightlifting and upper-body strength, yes, I think there is that fear," Harbaugh told CSNBayArea.com in March 2013. "It's something we've talked about. With a scheduled 11 draft picks, the 49ers will look for immediate contributors at a couple of positions and depth at many others.
There most certainly will be a draft pick on the 49ers’ 53-man roster at wide receiver and cornerback. After that, there are few guarantees about which positions the 49ers will target to add players with the hope of developing them into starters of the future.

I’m half-joking, but last year’s draft neatly illustrated how the 49ers are willing to select players rehabbing from serious injuries, give them redshirt seasons and hope they realize big returns down the road. A somber mood filled the 49ers locker room in Seattle following the NFC Championship. Not only were hopes of another trip to the Super Bowl crushed, a teammate was lost, severely injured in the game’s final moments.
NaVorro Bowman then made his way through the locker room, hobbled but not beaten by the crutches on which he now needed to walk. The mood lightened. After a taking a terrific blow, Bowman was at least upright and moving on his own. It was a sign that things would be alright. Time has the power to heal wounds, both the emotional and physical kind.

The 49ers also expressed interest in adding depth at inside linebacker, according to a source at the NFL owners meetings.
The 49ers are not expected to clear All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman for the opening of the regular season after he underwent surgery Feb. 4 to repair a torn ACL in his left knee. Bowman is signed through the 2019 season, and the 49ers have said they are not going to take any chances.
Michael Wilhoite, who started two games last season when Patrick Willis was unavailable due to a groin strain, is currently the 49ers’ top backup at inside linebacker. Nick Moody appeared in just four games in his rookie season.

Running back Frank Gore has one year remaining on his contract, but 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh believes the nine-year veteran has a future well beyond this season.
“I really think Frank has three more good years,” Harbaugh said Wednesday at the NFL owners meetings. “I truly believe that. But we’re in a game of taking it one year at a time.”
Gore, who turns 31 in May, is scheduled to earn $6.45 million this season. He rushed for 1,128 yards and nine touchdowns last season. Gore is the 49ers’ all-time leading rusher with 9,967 yards. He has eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in seven of his nine NFL seasons.

CEO Jed York on Tuesday provided a more detailed explanation of the Cleveland Browns’ quest to acquire coach Jim Harbaugh from the 49ers in January.
In the days after the 49ers’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship game, the Browns called York to ask about Harbaugh, he told Bay Area reporters at the NFL owners meetings.

Wide receiver: Certainly, there’s a need for an injection of speed right now. But it’s difficult to envision a rookie supplanting Anquan Boldin or Michael Crabtree in the starting lineup this season. At times over the past four seasons, the 49ers used running back Anthony Dixon in short-yardage situations. But in the 49ers’ biggest regular-season game, fullback Bruce Miller got the call.
Miller twice picked up first downs on third-and-short running plays in a late-season victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Miller had a 2-yard gain on a third-and-1 play on the 49ers’ game-winning, fourth-quarter drive.
But Miller sustained a fractured shoulder blade the next week and was placed on injured reserve. Now, Miller said he is completely healthy and will be ready for the start of the official program on April 21. He's also ready for a role that could include the ball in his hands more than in his first three NFL seasons.

The 49ers showed some interest in adding a veteran wide receiver even after securing Anquan Boldin to a two-year, $12 million extension. But they certainly were not going to pay big money for any receiver -- especially because it’s a deep draft of wideouts and the 49ers own five of the top 94 picks within the first three rounds.
The top remaining free-agent wide receivers available are Santonio Holmes, Lance Moore, Miles Austin, Sidney Rice, Kenny Britt, Damian Williams and Jerricho Cotchery.

Again this offseason, the 49ers envision Culliver as a starter with Tarell Brown’s departure to the Raiders and the team’s decision to cut Carlos Rogers for an eventual salary-cap savings of $6.6 million. Tramaine Brock is the presumptive starter at the other cornerback position.

The 49ers feel confident in their starting defensive lineup. And while there is a player tentatively marked in as their 12th starter, it’s an area that cries out for help in the draft.
Carlos Rogers, who handled the role of the nickel back each of his three seasons with the 49ers, was released last week at an eventual cap savings of $6.6 million. And the player who took over in the two playoffs games in which Rogers was sidelined, Perrish Cox, remains unsigned as a free agent.
The 49ers re-signed veteran Eric Wright, who is capable of playing the nickel position, to a one-year contract last week. While there's no questioning his physical talent, the coaching staff is not sold on Wright's ability to handle a major role in the defense.

Two players who had drawn interest from the 49ers – cornerback Walter Thurmond and wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders –agreed to contracts with the New York Giants and Denver Broncos, respectively.
