49ers coaches can’t work with Kap on mechanics until May 5

The Monday after the Super Bowl, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick reported to Bommarito Performance Systems in Miami and got to some serious work. Nobody has ever questioned Kaepernick’s work ethic. But a year ago at the NFL owners meetings, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said his quarterback ran the risk of becoming too big for his own good. "If you're just talking about weightlifting and upper-body strength, yes, I think there is that fear," Harbaugh told CSNBayArea.com in March 2013. "It's something we've talked about. 'I don't want you getting too jacked-up, Colin.' I want some speed, quickness, not just (flexing his chest muscles)."

Fangio could have long partnership with another legendary LB corps

After overseeing one of the best corps of linebackers in NFL history, it appears 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will have a longstanding relationship with another decorated foursome.

Snap count: 49ers will have options, competition at center

who has yet to sign with any team – center Jonathan Goodwin, who has handled virtually every snap for the team for the last three season. The frontrunner to replace him, of course, is fourth-year player Daniel Kilgore, who was …

49ers’ early blueprint for roster competition

It’s a month before the first day of the draft, and the 49ers’ roster is almost set. With a scheduled 11 draft picks, the 49ers will look for immediate contributors at a couple of positions and depth at many others. There most certainly will be a draft pick on the 49ers’ 53-man roster at wide receiver and cornerback. After that, there are few guarantees about which positions the 49ers will target to add players with the hope of developing them into starters of the future.

Have injury, will be drafted by 49ers? Clemson’s Thomas a potential target

Clemson offensive lineman Brandon Thomas is a highly-regarded NFL draft prospect who suffered a torn ACL last week that will surely sideline him for his rookie season. This makes him a future 49er, right? I’m half-joking, but last year’s draft neatly illustrated how the 49ers are willing to select players rehabbing from serious injuries, give them redshirt seasons and hope they realize big returns down the road. In 2013, a second-round pick (DE Tank Carradine, knee), fourth-rounder (RB Marcus Lattimore, knee) and fifth-rounder (DL Quinton Dial, toe) began the regular season on the non-football injury list and only Dial played a snap (19, to be exact).

Pagano: 49ers are getting an ‘all-star’ with Bethea

At the NFL owners meetings, Colts coach Chuck Pagano spoke very highly about new 49ers safety Antoine Bethea.

Single high? New CB Cook suggests changes in store for 49ers defense

Single high? New CB Cook suggests changes in store for 49ers defense
Last month Jim Harbaugh hinted about changes to the 49ers offense. Could the team’s defense also be in for a tweak or two?

Newly-signed cornerback Chris Cook suggested …

49ers could pick up two compensatory picks in 2015

The 49ers are in line to receive two compensatory picks in the 2015 draft, based on net losses during the free-agent signing period. The 49ers’ only qualifying gain in free agency is safety Antoine Bethea, whom the club awarded a four-year, $21 million contract, including a $5 million signing bonus, on the first day of the signing period. Meanwhile, the 49ers lost three free agents who figure to count toward the formula for determining compensatory draft picks:

49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman says he’s ahead of schedule

49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman has been making the rounds without the aide of crutches. Bowman’s knee buckled at an horribly awkward angle when players fell on his left leg in the 49ers NFC title game loss in Seattle. Bowman tore his anterior cruciate ligament and his medial cruciate ligament after falling on the ball for […]

Vernon Davis turned down ‘Dancing with the Stars’ gig

Coming off a season in which he caught 52 passes for 850 yards and 13 touchdowns, Vernon Davis is fielding superstar-level requests. In an interview with Sports Illustrated's MMQB, Davis said he was asked to be a contestant on Dancing with the Stars, but that he rejected the offer. “If it’s something I think I’ll be overwhelmed with, I won’t do it. I got an offer to do Dancing With the Stars this year but couldn’t, even though it was a beautiful opportunity. I have a feel for [the demands] now. I know what could be too much for me," Davis told MMQB's Robert Klemko.

49ers notes: Baalke likes Clemson CB; Brandin Cooks as DeSean-like deep threat

Interesting quote from Oregon State receiver Brandin Cooks today. Of course, the 49ers aren’t the only team looking for a wide receiver in the draft. The Eagles, picking at No. 22, could use one as well after parting ways with …

49ers cornerback Chris Culliver should not be defined only by his troubles

Fans, reporters, and radio talking heads want to label 49ers’ cornerback Chris Culliver a bad guy. It’s an easy characterization to make after Friday’s arrest in which Culliver was alleged to have hit a bicyclist and fled the scene, and then to have threatened a witness with brass knuckles. This incident gets conflated with Culliver’s […]

Bowman making progress in rehab from knee injury

A somber mood filled the 49ers locker room in Seattle following the NFC Championship. Not only were hopes of another trip to the Super Bowl crushed, a teammate was lost, severely injured in the game’s final moments. NaVorro Bowman then made his way through the locker room, hobbled but not beaten by the crutches on which he now needed to walk. The mood lightened. After a taking a terrific blow, Bowman was at least upright and moving on his own. It was a sign that things would be alright. Time has the power to heal wounds, both the emotional and physical kind.

Seeking safeties: 49ers looking at prospects in upcoming draft

The 49ers are looking at safeties. They were one of four teams who sent a scout to watch Central Arkansas’ Jestin Love, a strong safety, go through his pro-day workout…

With Chris Culliver’s troubles, will the 49ers look at Champ?

In the wake of Friday morning’s arrest, 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver is facing misdemeanor and felony hit-and-run, felony possession of brass knuckles and felony reckless driving. The charges stemmed from an incident in which Culliver allegedly struck a bicyclist with his car and then fled the scene. A witness allegedly chased Culliver and blocked his […]

Date set for Super Bowl L at Levi’s Stadium

On Friday the National Football League (NFL) revealed the official game day date for Super Bowl L, which will be played at Levi’s® Stadium in Santa Clara on February 7, 2016. “Santa Clara is proud to host the Super Bowl’s golden anniversary game in the Golden State,” said Santa Clara Mayor Jamie Matthews. “Around the world, all eyes will be focused on our city and the Bay Area on February 7, 2016, so we are excited to showcase our region’s beauty, culture and innovative spirit.” The Super Bowl is annually the most-watched television program in the United States, with an average audience of more than 100 million viewers, as well as one of the most-watched events worldwide.

As Bowman rehabs, 49ers look to add linebacker depth

The 49ers were already known to be in the market for a wide receiver and cornerback. The 49ers also expressed interest in adding depth at inside linebacker, according to a source at the NFL owners meetings. The 49ers are not expected to clear All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman for the opening of the regular season after he underwent surgery Feb. 4 to repair a torn ACL in his left knee. Bowman is signed through the 2019 season, and the 49ers have said they are not going to take any chances. Michael Wilhoite, who started two games last season when Patrick Willis was unavailable due to a groin strain, is currently the 49ers’ top backup at inside linebacker. Nick Moody appeared in just four games in his rookie season.

Aldon Smith receives support, space from 49ers

The 49ers are remaining in contact with outside linebacker Aldon Smith this offseason, while also giving him plenty of space. “A lot of people are working with him, but you don’t want to set up anything that’s uncomfortable and anything that’s beyond what the CBA rules are,” 49ers CEO Jed York said. “You can only do so much. Somebody has to work for himself if they’re going to get through these issues.”

Harbaugh noticed Kaepernick’s early-season foot injury

Colin Kaepernick claimed to have a hangnail on the "pinkie toe" of both feet early last season. And while 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh did not get into any specifics Wednesday at the NFL owners meetings, he certainly did not minimize his quarterback's undisclosed early-season foot injury. “I noticed it, especially in practice,” Harbaugh said. “I think anytime you have a foot, a hand or a finger, it affects you throwing and running.”

Harbaugh hints at changes to 49ers’ offense

The 49ers are seeking wide receivers this offseason and, Jim Harbaugh hinted, perhaps some tweaks to their power-based offense.

“A real good scheme evaluation, I think, is what’s next for us as coaches,” the 49ers coach said today at a …

Harbaugh: ‘Frank has three more good years’

Running back Frank Gore has one year remaining on his contract, but 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh believes the nine-year veteran has a future well beyond this season. “I really think Frank has three more good years,” Harbaugh said Wednesday at the NFL owners meetings. “I truly believe that. But we’re in a game of taking it one year at a time.” Gore, who turns 31 in May, is scheduled to earn $6.45 million this season. He rushed for 1,128 yards and nine touchdowns last season. Gore is the 49ers’ all-time leading rusher with 9,967 yards. He has eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in seven of his nine NFL seasons.

York details Browns’ inquiry about Harbaugh

CEO Jed York on Tuesday provided a more detailed explanation of the Cleveland Browns’ quest to acquire coach Jim Harbaugh from the 49ers in January. In the days after the 49ers’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship game, the Browns called York to ask about Harbaugh, he told Bay Area reporters at the NFL owners meetings. “They called. We said we didn’t have any interest,” York said of a potential trade of Harbaugh. “There was not a lot of shock or surprise on their side.”

Tension at 49ers headquarters? Yes, but they like it that way

Yes, there’s been some tension at 49ers headquarters when it comes to fiery Jim Harbaugh and feisty Trent Baalke. “I think I’ve said this before: 95 percent of the time they’re on the same page,” team owner Jed York said …

York: Kaepernick should be paid like a top QB

The 49ers appear prepared to make Colin Kaepernick one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league. And it could happen this offseason. On Tuesday, 49ers general manager Trent Baalke told Bay Area reporters at the NFL owners meetings that the team’s goal is to work out a contract extension with Kaepernick before the start of training camp.

Baalke speaks about 49ers interest in WR Jackson

General manager Trent Baalke said the 49ers are not among the many teams that reportedly checked into the prospect of trading for wide receiver DeSean Jackson. “As of this moment, there’s been no discussions between us and the Philadelphia Eagles whatsoever,” Baalke said in an interview with Bay Area News Group’s Tim Kawakami on Tuesday [...]

49ers add another CB to the mix

Cornerback Perrish Cox and the 49ers reached agreement on a one-year contract, according to several reports Tuesday. Cox, 27, appeared in nine games as an extra defensive back for the 49ers last season. He also played in two games for the Seattle Seahawks in 2013. He didn’t start any games for either team last season. [...]

49ers gain cap space with Miller’s three-year extension

Bruce Miller provides the 49ers a solid blocker, an able catcher and an improving runner. But the fullback's offerings aren't limited to the field.

Jim Harbaugh says a lot in short interview at the owners’ meetings

DOES MORE NEED TO BE DONE ABOUT MONITORING BEHAVIOR IN THE LOCKER ROOM: “Treating people in a first class manner is what we should all be striving to be about. … Everybody is professional; everybody has a job to do. You treat people with respect to get respect back.” WHAT THE ARE EXPECTATIONS FOR MARTIN?: “It’s just a powerful opportunity and a powerful motivator to say, ‘You know what, that was that situation, and this is who I am as a football player.’ It’s like an etch a sketch where you lift the page on the etch a sketch and write a whole new history for your self. DID YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO TALK TO JONATHAN ABOUT LIFTING THE PAGE?: “That’s an interesting question. No, I didn’t ask him anything. I told him I don’t want to know anything, unless he wants to share it with me. This is his knew opportunity, this is like the etch a sketch.” THERE WERE REPORTS THAT THERE IS DISCORD WITH JIM HARBAUGH AND TRENT BAALKE. WHAT IS THE REAL STORY?: “There is zero chance of me leaving the San Francisco 49ers. I love coaching my team. I love the organization that I serve. That story has been reported.” THE CLEVELAND BROWNS ARE SUPPOSEDLY TRYING (Harbaugh interrupting) “It was not my first mini-controversy. I treat mini-controversies and give them the respect that they are due.”

49ers net 3rd-round comp pick; have 6 of top 100 selections

One year after his exit, safety Dashon Goldson is still contributing to the 49ers. Thanks partly to the loss of the two-time Pro Bowler to Tampa Bay in free agency last year, the 49ers today received a third-round compensatory draft pick, No. 100 overall, in May’s draft. The compensatory picks were announced at the NFL […]

Osgood is latest free agent returning to 49ers

The 49ers are keeping Kassim Osgood’s special-teams prowess on the payroll. Osgood re-signed Monday on a one-year deal worth the $955,000 minimum salary for the 11-year veteran. He joined the 49ers last June and was a key member of their special-teams units, as well as a reserve wideout. Other free agents who’ve re-signed with the [...]

So-called “Bowman rule” has Jim Harbaugh’s backing.

ORLANDO, Fla. — The so-called “Navorro Bowman rule,” which would allow loose-ball scrambles to be reviewed by officials, has the support of Bowman’s head coach. “We’ll be for it,”…

Harbaugh calls Kaepernick’s extension a “high priority;” why 49ers never considered Gabbert in first round

The 49ers began discussing a contract extension for quarterback Colin Kaepernick last month, and Jim Harbaugh on Monday said it was “a high priority” to have that completed this offseason.

“The priority is that Colin Kaepernick is a San Francisco …

Baalke: ‘There is a lot of work to be done’

Set to start the 2014 NFL Draft with 11 picks, 49ers general manager Trent Baalke is prepared to move up, stand pat or move back to land his targets.

Baalke: ‘Jim and I work very well together’

Jim Harbaugh and Trent Baalke were inconspicuously standing together in a corner of a hotel lobby on Sunday at the NFL owners meetings. Yes, the 49ers coach and general manager are talking. And, yes, by the look of the opening of the new league year, Harbaugh and Baalke are closely working together on personnel decisions. “We have a lot of private discussions,” Baalke told CSNBayArea.com on Sunday. “And we’ll continue to have a lot of private discussions. Our biggest chore right now is – we made it through free agency – we’re getting ready for the draft.

Phil Dawson has a point: 49ers kicker leery of possible rule changes

ORLANDO — Extra points have become far too easy in the NFL. But don’t tell that to the guys who kick them for a living. “I wouldn’t call anything…

49ers drafting for need — next season and beyond

The time to draft for need is a year or two before there’s a need. With that in mind, here’s where the 49ers should look in this year’s draft: Wide receiver: Certainly, there’s a need for an injection of speed right now. But it’s difficult to envision a rookie supplanting Anquan Boldin or Michael Crabtree in the starting lineup this season. But with Crabtree entering the final year of his contract, the 49ers have to plan for a scenario in which Crabtree is not around in 2015.

49ers notes: Hester was on SF’s radar; team checks out cornerback

Niners running back LaMichael James capably handled punt- and kickoff-return duties after he assumed those roles in the latter stages of the 2013 season.

James averaged 10.9 yards per punt return, which ranked 14th in the NFL, and made an …

Miller’s role could evolve into short-yardage runner

At times over the past four seasons, the 49ers used running back Anthony Dixon in short-yardage situations. But in the 49ers’ biggest regular-season game, fullback Bruce Miller got the call. Miller twice picked up first downs on third-and-short running plays in a late-season victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Miller had a 2-yard gain on a third-and-1 play on the 49ers’ game-winning, fourth-quarter drive. But Miller sustained a fractured shoulder blade the next week and was placed on injured reserve. Now, Miller said he is completely healthy and will be ready for the start of the official program on April 21. He's also ready for a role that could include the ball in his hands more than in his first three NFL seasons.

49ers sign FB Miller to three-year extension

The 49ers signed fullback Bruce Miller to a three-year contract extension, the team announce on Thursday.

Harbaugh gets wish, Fangio receives pay raise

Vic Fangio registers on opposing teams' head coaching radar every year, but the defensive mastermind just received incentive to stay in S.F.

Patton’s competition for No. 3 likely to come from rookie

The 49ers appear to have all 11 offensive starters in place. They did not lose any and they didn’t add any during the first week of the new league year. The 49ers showed some interest in adding a veteran wide receiver even after securing Anquan Boldin to a two-year, $12 million extension. But they certainly were not going to pay big money for any receiver -- especially because it’s a deep draft of wideouts and the 49ers own five of the top 94 picks within the first three rounds. The top remaining free-agent wide receivers available are Santonio Holmes, Lance Moore, Miles Austin, Sidney Rice, Kenny Britt, Damian Williams and Jerricho Cotchery.

Rehabbing Culliver in line for a starting job with 49ers

The 49ers were ready to elevate cornerback Chris Culliver into the starting lineup a year ago. Then, he went down early in training camp with a season-ending torn ACL during a non-contact special-teams practice. Again this offseason, the 49ers envision Culliver as a starter with Tarell Brown’s departure to the Raiders and the team’s decision to cut Carlos Rogers for an eventual salary-cap savings of $6.6 million. Tramaine Brock is the presumptive starter at the other cornerback position. A source told CSNBayArea.com the 49ers plan to enter into talks with Culliver's representation on a contract extension this offseason. Culliver is entering the final season of his rookie deal.

Sub-par secondary? Don’t judge yet, 49ers fans

The 49ers have blown up the secondary they built in 2011 and that ranked in the top 10 in pass defense the past two seasons. But if you thought that unit was going to be great when it was assembled …

Verrett is best fit for 49ers’ secondary

The 49ers feel confident in their starting defensive lineup. And while there is a player tentatively marked in as their 12th starter, it’s an area that cries out for help in the draft. Carlos Rogers, who handled the role of the nickel back each of his three seasons with the 49ers, was released last week at an eventual cap savings of $6.6 million. And the player who took over in the two playoffs games in which Rogers was sidelined, Perrish Cox, remains unsigned as a free agent. The 49ers re-signed veteran Eric Wright, who is capable of playing the nickel position, to a one-year contract last week. While there's no questioning his physical talent, the coaching staff is not sold on Wright's ability to handle a major role in the defense.

Thurmond, Sanders land elsewhere; 49ers’ draft to likely fill needs

It’s looking as if the 49ers’ wish list for a cornerback and wide receiver will have to be filled in the draft. Two players who had drawn interest from the 49ers – cornerback Walter Thurmond and wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders –agreed to contracts with the New York Giants and Denver Broncos, respectively. Thurmond, the former Seattle Seahawks nickel back, visited the 49ers on Friday. Sanders was scheduled to arrive to meet with 49ers team officials Saturday night and Sunday. He canceled the visit late Saturday.

Pressing matter: Chris Cook clear about his role with 49ers

As Tarell Brown was signing his one-year deal in Oakland today, cornerback Chris Cook was signing a one-year contract on the other end of the bay

Like Jonathan Martin and Blaine Gabbert before him, Cook – who spent four, often …

Where does a third WR fit in 49ers’ two-WR offense?

After the oh-so-obvious first question – “How much will you pay me?” – Julian Edelman, Hakeem Nicks and any other starting-level free-agent WR should pose this to the 49ers: “How often do you use three wide-receiver formations?”

49ers host free agents Edelman, Thurmond as cap space dwindles

The 49ers are scheduled to host free-agent visits Friday with a pair of intriguing veterans who could fill spots at the wide receiver and cornerback positions. New England wide receiver Julian Edelman is making his first trip this offseason to visit with a potential suitor, while Seattle cornerback Walter Thurmond comes to Santa Clara after meeting with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 49ers enter the day with $3.846 million in cap space. That figure includes kicker Phil Dawson’s reported two-year, $6.134 million contract, which includes a $2 million signing bonus and a first-year cap figure of $2 million.

Homecoming on horizon? WR Edelman to visit 49ers; Nicks on radar

Last year, Edelman, a 2009 seventh-round pick, ranked fourth in the NFL in receptions as he dwarfed his previous career-best numbers. Prior to 2013, Edelman had never had more than 37 catches or 359 yards in a season.

Cornerback Thurmond is latest entrant into Seahawks-49ers personnel drama

It’s taken a couple days but apparently free agency is ready to spark another edition of the 49ers-Seahawks personnel wars. Seahawks cornerback Walter Thurmond, in a Twitter post, said he’ll visit the 49ers on Friday, following a “great” meeting with the Jacksonville Jaguars. “People need to chill, I haven’t made a decision. It’s a visit,” [...]
