Trade up? 49ers’ draft-day scenarios

Here are three first-day-of-draft scenarios for the 49ers in order of likelihood:

1. Trade up. 52% chance. This is the most likely outcomes for the following reasons: A.) Trent Baalke has done it in the past and it’s part of …

Kaepernick on investigation: ‘I’m glad the truth is getting out’

For the second time since he publicly became part of a Miami police investigation on April 10, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has taken to Twitter to discuss the matter. Today, a day after the Miami police released two 911 calls (story here), Kaepernick said he’s glad information is being provided to shed more light on what police have termed a “suspicious incident” at the Viceroy Hotel. On 911 calls, I’m glad the truth is getting out. Info that came out earlier was totally wrong. I look forward to this matter being resolved. — Colin Kaepernick (@Kaepernick7) May 7, 2014

Aldon Smith has engaged in interviews with police and conversations with members of the 49ers organization since his arrest April 13 at Los Angeles International Airport.

Will the 49ers make a deal to move up in the draft?

Rumors abound that the 49ers trying to work a deal to climb up in the draft. Supposedly, the team wants to nab LSU wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.. Their most logical trading partner appears to be the familiar and familial Baltimore Ravens. Brothers Harbaugh have made trades before, like the one that landed Anquan Boldin […]

Smith and 20 others have fifth-year options exercised

Aldon Smith was one of 21 players that had his fifth-year option picked up. Here's a rundown of the 2011 first-rounders and their contract statuses.

Kaepernick speaks for first time about Miami incident, how it’s ‘changed my whole way of thinking’

Colin Kaepernick referred to last month’s Miami incident as a “bad circumstance” while speaking Friday at the Turlock Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast in his childhood hometown, the Modesto Bee reported. The 49ers’ quarterback spoke publicly for the first time since his name surfaced in a Miami police investigation, stemming from an unidentified female’s report that she [...]

Bowman, Smith illustrate difficulty of answering character question

The 49ers employ an All-Pro linebacker whose college career appeared to foreshadow off-the-field trouble in the NFL: He was involved in an on-campus fight, suspended by his head coach and admitted to smoking marijuana while on probation for his altercation. No, the linebacker in question isn’t Aldon Smith, whose three-year career has been stuffed with off-the-field trouble.

Trade up for WR? 49ers could learn from history (or not)

Should the 49ers trade up in the first round to select a wide receiver next week? Using franchise history as a guide, the answer is a resounding yes. And an ear-splitting no. Twenty-nine years ago today, the 49ers moved up 12 spots in the 1985 draft in a trade with the Patriots to select Mississippi Valley State wide receiver Jerry Rice with the No. 16 overall pick. That worked out OK.

Source: 49ers interested in LSU’s Beckham, likely mid-1st-rounder

Armed with a stacked roster and bushel of draft picks, the 49ers traded up 13 spots in the first round last year to grab the player they coveted: LSU safety Eric Reid. This year, the elements are in place for recent history to repeat itself, perhaps right down to the college of the player the 49ers might covet.

If Joe Montana was putting together a football team, Colin Kaepernick would be at the top of his shortlist, with Russell Wilson a close second.

49ers and Crabtree: Why an extension isn’t imminent

And the same can be said of wide receiver Michael Crabtree, although those discussions are presumably far less involved at this point. Last week, general manager Trent Baalke said the team has reached out to Crabtree’s representatives regarding an extension.

Baalke’s list: Analyzing the 49ers’ pre-draft visitors

NFL teams are allowed to host up to 30 draft prospects, and Sunday was the final day NFL teams could have such a visit. Here’s a partial list of…

Baalke on 49ers’ locker room: ‘Those are damn good guys’

The recent spate of off-the-field incidents involving the 49ers was a dominant topic during Baalke’s annual pre-draft meeting with the media. During the nearly hour-long session, Baalke repeatedly said he was “disappointed” in the actions of a few players who weren’t representative of the locker room.

Harbaugh believes ‘good resolution’ coming in Kaepernick case, wants it to happen quickly

Coach Jim Harbaugh expects 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick to be cleared of any wrongdoing in a Miami incident that police deemed suspicious. “Looking at Colin Kaepernick’s situation, at some point there needs to be a resolution to some of this jump-the-gun, witch-hunt scenario we’re seeing,” Harbaugh said Friday, following the team’s tryouts for local prospects. [...]

DT Dobbs signs RFA tender

Dobbs, 26, will earn $1.431 million in 2014 if he makes the team. Last year, the former undrafted free agent and fellow backup Tony Jerod-Eddie played more than 300 snaps and gave breathers to Justin Smith and Ray McDonald, who rarely came off the field in previous seasons.

During his annual pre-draft meeting with the media, Baalke made it clear the 49ers don’t intend to cut ties with the […]

Montana, Marino to headline ‘last football game at Candlestick’

It won’t come close to matching the hype of their Super Bowl XIX encounter, but Hall-of-Fame quarterbacks Joe Montana, 57, and Dan Marino, 52, will go head-to-head one more time this summer in what promoters are touting as the final football game at Candlestick Park. Montana will lead a team of former 49ers against Marino’s NFL […]

49ers waive fullback Debniak

The 49ers on Tuesday waived fullback Alex Debniak, whose rookie season ended last year in a June workout due to a torn Achilles.

Lloyd, man of many interests, says he’s committed after year off

Brandon Lloyd’s unique personality has often been cited as a reason he played for six teams in his first 10 seasons. Now, after a year away from the NFL, it’s clear Lloyd still has a one-of-a-kind persona. ON KNBR this morning, the 49ers newly signed wide receiver fielded questions about his rap-music career, role in zombie movie and job at Denver-based Re-Steel Supply Company, which builds composite components for airplane manufacturers. Of course, Lloyd’s myriad interests – combined with his decision to not play football in 2013 – inspire questions about his desire. Today, Lloyd, 32, who reportedly rebuffed six contract offers last year, dismissed the idea he’s not fully committed. “I’m a football player,” Lloyd said. “… I consider myself a dynamic person, but I’m a sportsman.”

Big-bodied tight ends draw 49ers’ attention

The 49ers have four large tight ends with NFL experience, but that doesn't preclude them from using one of 11 scheduled draft picks to add bulk.

Little-used 49ers running back LaMichael James, who is reportedly on the trading block, has no plans to participate in the team’s mostly voluntary offseason program, a league source said.

John Harbaugh tells why there wasn’t post-SB hug with Jim

After the Ravens defeated the 49ers in Super Bowl XXVII, John and Jim Harbaugh shook hands. But they didn't hug. Big brother John explains why.

Report: 49ers shopping LaMichael James

Asked today if little-used 49ers running back LaMichael James has requested a trade, a league source left it at this: “He wants to play.” And it appears 2012 second-round pick might play elsewhere in 2014 after collecting just 39 carries and playing in 14 of 32 regular-season games in his first two seasons with San […]

Source: Goodwin has free-agent visit with Saints

Jonathan Goodwin, 35, has said he’d continue his NFL career in 2014 if the right opportunity arose. It appears that might happen. The free-agent center who spent the past three seasons with the 49ers visited the Saints today, a league source said. New Orleans would be an ideal landing spot for Goodwin given his ties […]

Can they pass test? With defensive questions, 49ers will meet Manning et al.

In the pass-happy NFL, where four running backs have been first-round picks over the past three seasons, defenses must have an ability to pressure the quarterback and trot out at least three capable cornerbacks. With that in mind, the 49ers haven’t had a stellar offseason. Tarell Brown and Carlos Rogers, their starting cornerbacks since 2011, […]

49ers showing interest in running backs

Even with Frank Gore, Marcus Lattimore, Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James under contract, the 49ers are taking a look at some running backs for the upcoming draft. Towson running back Terrance West is scheduled to meet with the 49ers on Monday, his agent confirmed. This week, the 49ers hosted Central Florida running back Storm Johnson.

No Bowman? No Aldon? Is 3-4 still best defense for 49ers?

The 49ers are a 3-4 defensive team whose top two defensive players, NaVorro Bowman and Aldon Smith, may not be around when the season starts. Both are linebackers. Which…

Flamboyant, productive WR signed after year hiatus? Not Moss this time, but rather Lloyd

To help launch their 2012 season’s Super Bowl run, the 49ers lured a veteran wide receiver out of a one-year hiatus. Can Brandon Lloyd be this year’s version of Randy Moss, with all due respect to their differing talents, personalities and accomplishments? Lloyd signed a one-year contract Tuesday with the 49ers, who drafted him in [...]

In addition to a not-guilty verdict, Kilgore can have the arrest expunged from his record. In […]

49ers can obtain Aldon Smith insurance in draft

The 49ers have insurance for Aldon Smith. And they utilized it last season when Smith took a leave of absence and missed five games while seeking treatment for substance abuse. The 49ers selected outside linebacker/defensive end Corey Lemonier in the third round. He played in pass-rush situations and veteran Dan Skuta played on first and second downs to compensate for Smith’s loss. With Smith out of action, the 49ers won road games at St. Louis and Tennessee, home games against Houston and Arizona, and a game against Jacksonville in London. They went 5-0 during the time in which Smith was away. The 49ers have the franchise’s best pure pass-rusher since the days of Charles Haley, whom the 49ers traded to the Dallas Cowboys. It was a move both coach George Seifert and owner Eddie DeBartolo would later say they regret. DeBartolo called allowing the Haley trade one of his biggest mistakes as an owner.

One week until offseason training program begins

The 49ers offseason training program begins a week from today, otherwise known as “not-soon-enough” when considering the legal trouble several players have run into since last season ended. Most players have spent the first three months of the offseason by training away from the team facility, such as Colin Kaepernick in Miami. That’s due in [...]

49ers in talks with Brandon Lloyd about possible return

Veteran wide receiver Brandon Lloyd, who did not play last season, is in talks with the 49ers about the possibility of rebooting his NFL career, according to multiple sources. The 49ers reportedly expressed interest in several free-agent wide receivers, including Julian Edelman, Emmanuel Sanders, Golden Tate, Hakeem Nicks, Devin Hester and DeSean Jackson. The 49ers remain in the market for another wide receiver to add to the mix. Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree are the 49ers’ presumptive starting wide receivers. Quinton Patton also figures to be in the mix for playing time, and the 49ers are expected to invest in a draft pick. Lloyd, who turns 33 in July, does not play special teams. If he signs with the 49ers, he would seemingly have to earn the No. 3 job to secure a roster spot at the beginning of the regular season.

Culliver charged with felony, two misdemeanors

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver was charged Wednesday with one felony and two misdemeanors stemming from an alleged hit-and-run accident last month, the Santa Clara District Attorney's office said. Culliver, 25, is scheduled to be arraigned on those charges on Friday. It will more than likely be continued to a later day to allow Culliver time to enter a plea. The District Attorney's office charged Culliver with felony possession of metal knuckles. If convicted, it carries a prison sentence of 16 months, two years or three years. A judge has discretion to grant probation and a sentence of no time to one year.

49ers-Ravens joint exhibition practices make sense

Coach Jim Harbaugh was not thrilled with the NFL schedule-maker in 2011 when the 49ers had to travel to face his brother’s Baltimore Ravens on a short week for a Thanksgiving night matchup. So he can’t be too happy the 49ers are scheduled to open the exhibition season with a cross-country trip to meet the Ravens on Thursday, Aug. 7. Typically, preseason games are limited to regional matchups for convenience. Teams carry 90 players on their training camp rosters. Although there is no word from the 49ers, it only seems reasonable Harbaugh would consider spending a little extra time on the East Coast prior to the exhibition opener to take part in some joint practices with the Ravens.

Preseason: 49ers to host Denver in first game at Levi’s; open at Baltimore

The date for the first date is now set. Sort of. The 49ers will play the first football game at Levi’s Stadium during Week 2 of the preseason against the Broncos. Levi’s Stadium to host Super Bowl 50, but not Pro Bowl

The Pro Bowl following the upcoming NFL season will be played in Arizona, the site of Super Bowl XLIX. But Santa Clara’s Levi’s Stadium will not play host to the Pro Bowl the week before Super Bowl L comes to the Bay Area. The NFL announced on Wednesday that the Pro Bowl on Jan. 25, 2015, will be the third played in the same city as the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is set for a week later, Feb. 1, at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
