“There has not been a discussion with another team regarding Kap,” Baalke, the 49ers general manager, said. “We have not made a call, nor has anyone called us. So the report that was pushed out there, and I’m not sure who reported it and don’t really care, but it was false, 100-percent false.”
“I can’t say it any cleaner. I came out with that statement (Sunday) and that was turned upside down. So I’ll say it again. There have been absolutely none, no conversations, with any team regarding our quarterback. Period. Exclamation point.”
A report Sunday night, by Jayson Braddock of Houston’s SportsTalk 790, claimed the Chicago Bears and and Philadelphia Eagles had talked with the 49ers about obtaining Kaepernick.
Baalke took exception to any notion that Kaepernick could be expendable because he was drafted into the organization in 2011 under then-coach Jim Harbaugh, who was replaced in January by Jim Tomsula.
“The assumption that Kap was Jim’s guy? Kap was our guy,” Baalke said of the quarterback who signed a six-year contract extension last year.
Kaepernick struggled during the 49ers’ 8-8 run last season. He completed 60.5 percent of his passes with 19 touchdowns, 10 interceptions and 52 sacks.
Why is he still attractive to the 49ers? “Do I really have to answer that?” Baalke responded.
“There’s a lot I like about Kap,” Baalke continued. “And there’s a lot this organization likes about Kap. I don’t want to say it’s a foolish question, but the guy is a very talented. He can impact a game with his arm and his feet.”

Here are some other notes from Baalke's unscheduled media session:
-- Defensive tackle Justin Smith is "still sorting through the process" of whether he'll retire or return for a 15th season, and that the 49ers are allowing him as much time as needed before the season starts.
-- Linebacker NaVorro Bowman's recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament is going well, as are those by running back Kendall Hunter, guard Brandon Thomas and cornerback Keith Reaser.
-- Although Baalke said wide receiver Stevie Johnson remained under contract, that is only because the 49ers have yet to file paperwork with the league, which is expected to happen by Thursday.
-- Reggie Bush met with Baalke and members of the coaching staff before leaving town without a deal. "Great guy, good conversation," Baalke said of the nine-year veteran. "Now it's time to sit down and go through the pros and cons. ... We're not the only team interested."
-- Baalke said the 49ers have no interest and have not contacted free agent defensive tackle Greg Hardy, who sat out last season following a domestic-abuse case.
-- Fullback Bruce Miller's status, following Thursday's arrest for suspicion of spousal abuse, is a "pending legal matter," said Baalke, who wouldn't detail the 49ers' internal-review process. "We understand the gravity of where we're at," Baalke said. "That's been well documented over the last six to 12 months."
-- Baalke compared the signing of troubled wide receiver Jerome Simpson to the 2012 acquisition of Perrish Cox, who missed the previous season following legal turmoil. Simpson sat out last season, having been released in September by the Minnesota Vikings after they learned of his third arrest in a two-year span for marijuana- and alcohol-related offenses.
-- Jarryd Hayne, the Australian rugby league star who signed last week as a potential return specialist, is expected to arrive in the United States in time for the start of the 49ers' offseason program April 6.
-- Under new offensive coordinator Geep Chryst, Baalke said "you will see some changes philosophically, but how much and how we use personnel, that's what they're meeting on now, 24/7."

Blaine Gabbert's first taste of free agency didn't last a full day before he chose to re-sign with the 49ers.
Gabbert, Colin Kaepernick's seldom-used backup last season, agreed to a two-year, $2 million contract, ESPN reported Tuesday night.
The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Gabbert in the first round of the 2011 draft and traded him to the 49ers a year ago.

Similarly, the 49ers may be parting with cornerback Perrish Cox, who could cash in thanks to his career-best season and a thin free-agent cornerback market. According to a source, the 49ers aren’t currently a contender to sign Cox, who will visit Washington on Wednesday. The Browns also have interest, the Sacramento Bee reported.
Back in mid January, 49ers radio analyst Tim Ryan made some interesting remarks about Colin Kaepernick.
"Nobody has really wanted to hear this for several weeks, if not months, but there's a big decision to be made on him in terms of the quarterback for next year," Ryan explained. "Once they get the coordinator, Colin is gonna be under a heavy evaluation ... I don't think we've seen his upside yet but there's gonna be a lot of eyes on him in the next six weeks to decide exactly where they want to go long-term with the guy who is costing them a million dollars a game next year."

The 49ers had the need for speed, one they're hoping to satisfy with the acquisition of wide receiver Torrey Smith.
Smith agreed to terms on a five-year contract with the 49ers worth up to $40 million, with $22 million guaranteed, ProFootballTalk.com reported.
After establishing himself as a deep threat in his first four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, Smith flew to the Bay Area on Tuesday morning to finalize his move to the 49ers.
The team is expected to confirm Smith's deal once he passes a physical and signs his contract.
The business side of football is too crazy for my liking
— Torrey Smith (@TorreySmithWR) March 10, 2015
Smith's reported guarantee of $22 million is larger than what quarterback Colin Kaepernick received last year ($12.4 million) as part of his six-year deal. Defensive tackle Justin Smith received $20 million guaranteed upon signing with the 49ers in 2008.
Torrey Smith, 26, reunites with wide receiver Anquan Boldin, having helped the Ravens defeat the 49ers 34-31 two years ago in Super Bowl XLVII. Smith (6-foot-1, 205 pounds) had a team-high 11 touchdown catches last season, and he's averaged 16.9 yards per reception in his career.
It's unknown if Stevie Johnson has been released, but if he returns, also on the 49ers wide receiver corps are Jerome Simpson, Bruce Ellington, Quinton Patton, Chuck Jacobs, Lance Lewis and Trindon Holliday. Michael Crabtree, Brandon Lloyd and Kassim Osgood are unrestricted free agents.

Jed York, Trent Baalke and Patrick Willis spoke at Willis’ retirement press conference Tuesday afternoon. Willis agreed to answer questions; York and Baalke refused.
Here are selected quotes from Willis’ press conference. Stay tuned for the full transcript.
Q: As far as the timing of your retirement, how much of it is physical? How much of it is about where you are with football? How much of it is spiritual?
WILLIS: It’s something about these feet. That’s what has made me who I am. I really believe in Psalm 18:32-33: “It’s the Lord who makes my way perfect. He enables me to stand on heights. He makes my feet like feet of a deer.” I really believe when people say, “Man, how does he run like that? Did you see him chase that guy down?” I don’t know what it is about these feet, but they got y’all saying, “Wow, who’s that guy! Wow, where did he come from!” I no longer have that in these feet to go out there and give you guys that kind of “wow.” I came in with it. I feel like I’ve done my best to go out with it. I know I don’t have too much more left in these toes.
Q: Almost two months ago, your two last words to us at your exit interview, you said you felt you have five or six years left in you. What happened between then and now?
WILLIS: I learned an important lesson about life: Many are the plans of a man’s heart, but the Lord’s will will prevail — Proverbs 19:21. I learned that hard way. I would love nothing more than to win a Super Bowl. I would love nothing more than to bring No.6 back here. I would love nothing more than to lace up them cleats and to not have to worry about, “Lord, Jesus, are my feet going to be alright today just to practice so I don’t look old at 30?”

Linebacker Patrick Willis gave a strong indication Monday night that indeed his headed for retirement, and doing so with religion on his mind.
No press conference has been announced by Willis or the 49ers on his status but he posted somewhat of a farewell message on his social-media accounts:
"Today is my Future, Past, and Present all in one ...
"...it's bigger than me, it always has been and it always will be...
"I thank you guys for everything, it has been an absolute pleasure....
"I look forward to the continuation of my journey...
"I feel full with something that needs to be out, and i just want to share it!
"Success is only as beautiful as our Consistency! My life is based On a True Concept! I know I'm not the only one!

So, Frank Gore leaves, Patrick Willis retires, and Justin Smith might follow those two out of the suddenly swinging door. Fullback Bruce Miller is arrested for misdemeanor domestic abuse, which is an entirely different category and should be dealt with as such.
Wait, not done yet. The 49ers are considering signing defensive end Greg Hardy, who sat out last year because of domestic abuse charges were dropped after the woman failed to show up to press charges. This, of course, makes you wonder what “winning with class” means. And then there’s quarterback Colin Kaepernick trade rumors.
What’s interesting is all this falls back on York, and by extension, general manager Trent Baalke. They are getting excoriated by this site and several others.

Free-agent linebacker Dan Skuta has agreed to terms with the Jacksonville Jaguars on a five-year, $20.5 million contract, a source told CSNBayArea.com on Monday.
Skuta, a six-year veteran, spent the past two seasons with the 49ers and started 17 of the 30 games in which he appeared. Skuta was the primary starter during the games in which Aldon Smith missed over the past two seasons.

The Santa Clara arrest log shows that Bruce Miller was arrested for battery of a spouse on March 5.
Trent Baalke just released a written statement about Miller: “We were disappointed to learn of these reports and will do our due diligence in collecting all relevant information.”
This is tremendously troubling. Miller seemed like one of the good guys. He has a warm, welcoming smile, he’s generous with his time and he’s easy to talk to. I’ve covered his entire career and I’ve always liked him.
If Miller gets charged, the 49ers may cut him. They say they have a “zero-tolerance” policy for domestic violence.
Of course, this report doesn’t mean Miller will get charged. Stay tuned as this story develops.

Guard Mike Iupati, who was selected to the Pro Bowl three times in his five seasons with the 49ers, will now face his old team two times a season.
Iupati plans to sign with the Arizona Cardinals, a source confirmed Monday to CSNBayArea.com. As a member of the NFC West, Iupati will face the 49ers twice a season. He will most likely match up against former Cardinals defensive lineman Darnell Dockett, who last week signed with the 49ers.
The 49ers appeared to prepare last year for the loss of Iupati as a free agent this offseason with the third-round selection of guard Brandon Thomas, who sustained a torn ACL during a pre-draft workout.

The San Francisco 49ers have managed somehow to contrive an offseason in which they see their window of opportunity closing while not being sure just how many hands are on the sill.
In other words, the process they like to think they control is running away from them, for more reasons than merely their own.
The things that link this team to the grand old days are now so few that one can ignore the nuances of how it has happened, squint real hard and say this team is full-bore starting over. To draw any other conclusion is to be, well, either blind, or blind crazy.
Whether it be Frank Gore (a team choice, based on the rules of free agency), Patrick Willis (a player’s choice, unless we find out that he was subtly pushed out), Colin Kaepernick (apparently going nowhere, but the fingerprints are either media members, his agents, 49er whisperers or Kaepernick himself), Michael Crabtree (unlikely to return under any circumstances) or Justin Smith (if he retires, he will have done the calculations himself independent of outside influences), a lot of cornerstones of this franchise have been pushed aside in the last couple of months.

The 49ers claimed they wanted running back Frank Gore back on the team. But, clearly, the Philadelphia Eagles wanted him more.
The Eagles are reportedly set to sign Gore on Tuesday to a three-year deal worth $5 million a year with $7.5 million guaranteed. One source said the 49ers were not willing to go as high as $3.75 million annually to keep Gore with the club that drafted him in 2005.
Gore, the 49ers’ all-time leading rusher, was a team captain in the past, so the 49ers lose a lot of leadership. But, finally, general manager Trent Baalke can implement a backs-by-committee approach.
"I'm a big believer -- we are big believers -- in a three-headed approach," Baalke said in 2013. "In other words, having a group of backs that bring to the table something a little bit different than the other one so you can do a lot of different things.

The 49ers on Monday signed tight end Derek Carrier to a two-year contract extension through the 2017 season. The deal is worth up to $3.3 million, according to a source.
Carrier, whose was set to become a restricted free agent next offseason, appeared in 11 games with the 49ers in 2014. He caught nine passes for 105 yards. He appeared in five games for the 49ers in 2013 but did not catch a pass.
Carrier is expected to compete for the backup role behind starter Vernon Davis. Vance McDonald’s season ended on injured reserve with a back injury. Coach Jim Harbaugh announced in December that McDonald would undergo a procedure to repair a disc in his back. The 49ers re-signed Garrett Celek on Friday to a one-year contract.

The 49ers are likely to lose two of their top defensive players to retirement, according to a report and sources.
Defensive lineman Justin Smith and linebacker Patrick Willis are expected to retire and the announcements could come early this week, sources told CSNBayArea.com. Smith’s likely retirement was first reported Monday morning by Pro Football Talk.
Smith, 35, has contemplated retirement the past several seasons. He is scheduled to enter the final year of the three-year, $17.1 million contract he signed in June of 2013.

General manager Trent Baalke strongly denied a report late Sunday night that the 49ers are seeking to trade quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
“Colin is our quarterback and we are excited to have him,” Baalke said in a statement. “He is not going anywhere. The media reports suggesting otherwise are without merit and, quite frankly, ridiculous.”
Jayson Braddock of KBME radio in Houston reported the 49ers have put Kaepernick on the trade block and they’re taking offers for the four-year veteran. The Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears have inquired about a trade, according to the report.

Just like past offseasons, Torrey Smith will be spending quality time with Anquan Boldin and Vernon Davis. Only this time, they're expected to do so as 49ers teammates.
Smith will bring his deep-threat speed to the 49ers after four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, barring any foreseen change of heart before free agency allows his contract to be finalized Tuesday, the Baltimore Sun reported Sunday.
He joins a 49ers wide receiver corps that is undergoing its annual makeover. Poised to leave the unit are Michael Crabtree as a free agent and perhaps Stevie Johnson if he doesn't reduce his $5.5 million salary. Jerome Simpson, who was out of the NFL last season following multiple arrests for drug- and alcohol-related offenses, was signed last week to a two-year deal.
Smith's connections to the 49ers go beyond winning a Super Bowl against them two years ago, when he had two receptions for 35 yards in the Ravens' 34-31 win.
Smith's has remained a close friendship with Boldin, who the Ravens traded to the 49ers two years ago. Smith's bond to Davis traces to being University of Maryland products, although Smith was just arriving on campus in 2006 when Davis was getting drafted sixth overall by the 49ers.
"Vernon is a great guy and someone who I look up to in a lot of ways," Smith told the Ravens' website last August when the 49ers were in town for joint practices. "He was an inspiration for me.”
Although Davis is coming off a career-worst year (26 catches, 245 yards, two touchdowns), general manager Trent Baalke said last month that Davis absolutely would be part of this year's team.
Smith bid farewell to his Ravens tenure with a blog post Sunday thanking an array of people, from those at the Ravens to his supporters in the Baltimore-area. That good-bye letter did not tip off which city was his next destination: "I will be playing for a different organization, but I will remain committed to the City of Baltimore."
Smith's fourth season with the Ravens featured a career-high 11 touchdown catches, plus one more in a wild-card playoff win at Pittsburgh. His 49 receptions matched a career-low from 2012, and his 767 yards were the fewest of his career.
The 49ers are likely most focused on his yards-per-catch ability, and although he had a career-low 15.7 average last season, he's averaged 16.9 in his career.
Last season, Brandon Lloyd led the 49ers in averaging 21 yards per catch, but on only 14 receptions.
If all goes as planned, Colin Kaepernick's top targets in 2015 will be familiar at least among themselves: Smith, Davis and Boldin.

Frank Gore will sign a three-year contract with the Eagles according to Adam Schefter. The deal reportedly is worth $7.5 million guaranteed.
It’s ironic the Eagles want Gore in their zone-read running game, considering Gore never could get acclimated to the Niners’ zone-read package with Colin Kaepernick.
This signing works out perfectly for the 49ers. They no longer have to worry about pushing Gore out the door and getting blowback from the fans. The Eagles gave the Niners an easy out.
At the same time, the Niners now have to sign a running back or draft one. Running back just became a sheer necessity.

For Aldon Smith, this really is a contract year.
Instead of having his $9.754 million salary guaranteed next week, Smith has restructured it with the 49ers in an interesting way.
Smith still stands to make that amount but through a series of incremental roster bonuses during the year, the Sacramento Bee first reported. He will still count the same $9.754 million against the salary cap.
“The thought behind it is that Aldon realizes he’s been his own worst enemy. He has come a long way since he was suspended," Smith's agent, Doug Hendrickson, told Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. "Ultimately his goal, my goal, and the team’s goal is for him to sign a long-term contract with the Niners.”
Smith had a career-low two sacks following a nine-game suspension to start the season. He had 14, 19 1/2 and 8 1/2 sacks in his first three seasons since the 49ers drafted him seventh overall in 2011.

Darnell Dockett claims the 49ers hit the lottery Thursday by adding his veteran presence and passion to their defensive line.
The winning numbers trumped those of his former team, the Arizona Cardinals. Dockett landed a two-year $7.5 million deal that includes $5 million this year and $2 million guaranteed, according to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.
Adding Dockett wasn’t the 49ers’ only preemptive strike to general free agency, which begins with the league year Tuesday. Wide receiver Jerome Simpson, whose career got sidetracked by substance-related arrests and suspensions, also signed a two-year deal Thursday.
Neither Dockett nor Simpson played in 2014, for contrasting reasons. Dockett tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in an August practice. Simpson was cut Sept. 18 by the Minnesota Vikings while serving his second substance-abuse-related suspension in three years.
In crossing NFC West party lines, Dockett bolsters a defensive line that is still awaiting word on whether Justin Smith will retire or return for a 15th season.
“I gave the Arizona Cardinals two, three times to match the (49ers) offer,” Dockett told 910-AM Phoenix. “When I did, I was willing to take less than San Fran offered.”
Released last week after 11 seasons with the Cardinals, Dockett found an enthusiastic suitor in the 49ers, especially first-year coach Jim Tomsula.
“This guy is awesome,” Dockett said of Tomsula. “After every game I played in San Francisco, he’d come over and we’d chat it up. He admired my game and what I brought to table.
“When players got word I was coming on a visit (earlier this week), I got texts and calls from all their big-name guys on their team.”
Quarterback Colin Kaepernick was among those who celebrated Dockett’s arrival, tweeting: “Welcome to the bay big hommie let’s eat!”
The 49ers could be losing several big-name players in free agency, however. Running back Frank Gore, wide receiver Michael Crabtree, guard Mike Iupati, linebacker Dan Skuta and cornerbacks Chris Culliver and Perrish Cox are slated to hit the market, and negotiations can commence Saturday with other teams.
The 49ers also may cast off outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks and wide receiver Stevie Johnson, who are due to make nearly $6 million each.
Dockett was able to sign immediately because his contract had been terminated by the Cardinals. They reportedly had offered him a deal to stay worth up to $4 million, or $2 million less than he stood to make before Friday’s release.
“They hit the lottery,” Dockett said of the 49ers. “They got themselves a (expletive) football player that loves what he does and will sacrifice whatever it takes to win football games.”
Hall of Fame coach John Madden praised the 49ers’ acquisition of Dockett, saying on KCBS 740-AM: “He’s a guy that plays inside and raises havoc. If he’s on your side, he’s a real tough guy. If you’re playing against him, he may be bordering on the dirty guy. That’s the kind of guy you want.”
Dockett, 33, declared himself “healthy” during his radio spot, and if there was any question about his durability and desire, he noted that he missed only 13 practices in his Cardinals tenure and played hurt every game. Of Dockett’s 40 1/2 career sacks, seven have come against the 49ers.
“They got themselves a football player that loves what he does and will sacrifice whatever it takes to win football games,” Dockett said.

Cornerback Perrish Cox, who is scheduled to hit the free-agent market next week, believes wide receiver Michael Crabtree has played his final game in a 49ers uniform.
When asked Thursday if he believes Crabtree will be back with the 49ers, Cox said on 95.7 The Game , “Nah, I doubt that.”
Why?
“From the receiver that Crabtree is, last year our receiving corps that we had, we had a lot of receivers that wanted the ball,” Cox said. “Crabtree is one of those guys that wants the ball. And when you have players like we have on our squad -- with the receiver corps we had, the tight end, we got the running back, a good quarterback that runs and passes the ball -- I don’t think he’s one of those guys that wants to be in an offense like that. That’s just my opinion, though.”

The 49ers are clearly in the market for a wide receiver after visiting with free agents Ted Ginn and Jerome Simpson on Wednesday.
Three of the 49ers’ top four wideouts from a year ago face uncertain futures. Michael Crabtree and Brandon Lloyd are scheduled free agents. And Stevie Johnson, acquired last offseason in a trade with the Buffalo Bills for a fourth-round draft pick, is scheduled to make $6.025 million. He will likely face a pay reduction in order to return for a second season with the 49ers.
If the 49ers are open to dealing for another wide receiver, veteran Brandon Marshall is reportedly an option. The Chicago Bears are entertaining trade offers for Marshall, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.

Ted Ginn Jr. ushered in the Jim Harbaugh era by scoring two touchdowns on returns in the 2011 season opener. Could the 49ers bring him back after a two-year absence to kick off Jim Tomsula's coaching tenure?
Ginn, an unrestricted free agent, is scheduled to visit the 49ers on Wednesday, according to ESPN. The Tennessee Titans hosted him Tuesday.
After a three-year stint with the 49ers, Ginn played in 2013 for the Carolina Panthers and last season for the Arizona Cardinals, who released him Feb. 23.
Although Bruce Ellington is the incumbent return specialist after a modest rookie season, Ginn could compete for that job, as might Jarryd Flynn, an Australian rugby league star who officially signed a three-year contract Tuesday with the 49ers.
Ginn turns 30 next month. One potential destination for the eight-year veteran figured to be his hometown Cleveland Browns, where he would be reunited with safety Donte Whitner, a Glenville High School classmate.
Ginn's return averages dipped last season to 19 yards on kickoffs and 10.7 on punts.
Ginn has long sought to make a bigger impact as a wide receiver, and he left the 49ers after catching only two passes in 2013. He had 19 receptions and eight rushes in 2012. His 2011 season came to a premature end because of a knee injury, forcing Kyle Williams into the punt-returner role in an ill-fated NFC Championship game loss to the New York Giants.

Bubba Ventrone, a special teams catalyst the past two seasons, is retiring to become a special team assistant with the reigning champion New England Patriots.
Ventrone's 10-year career in the NFL began in 2005 as an undrafted free agent on the Patriots practice squad, where he displayed the hustle and smarts that showed into his final seasons with the 49ers.
The Patriots announced his hiring Tuesday morning.
Ventrone was one of the 49ers' 16 players scheduled for unrestricted free agency March 10. He takes a role vacated by Joe Judge's promotion to replace Scott O'Brien, who retired after the Patriots' Super Bowl XLIX victory.
The 49ers brought in Ventrone in 2013, and while he finished with the second-most tackles on special teams that season, he won that unit's Blue Collar Player of the Year award. Ventrone had three special-teams tackles last season in eight games last year, having been signed and released three times earlier in the season.
First-year coach Jim Tomsula appointed Thomas McGaughey as the 49ers' special teams coordinator and Richard Hightower as a special teams assistant earlier this month.

Twenty-seven-year-old Rugby League star Jarryd Hayne has signed a futures contract with the 49ers. The contract guarantees Hayne a spot on the Niners’ 90-man offseason roster. Good, creative signing. Hayne has the physical traits of a first round pick. He is 6’2″, 226 pounds and he reportedly ran a 4.53 40-yard dash a few weeks ago. Compare Hayne to Melvin Gordon, who is expected to be a first-round pick in May. Gordon is 6’1″, 215 pounds and he ran a 4.52 at the NFL Combine.
Hayne never has played football. He may not make the 49ers’ final 53-man roster. If he does, God love him. If he doesn’t, at least we know what the Niners are looking for in Frank Gore’s replacement — a 220-pounder who runs about a 4.5.
The 49ers’ offensive line, considered one of the top units in the NFL for the past several years, did not hold up its end of the bargain last season.
The pass-blocking was not the sole reason quarterback Colin Kaepernick was sacked 52 times, but a lack of adequate protection was routinely an issue throughout the season. The run-blocking was also spotty, though the 49ers finished with a strong 4.6-yard average per rushing attempt.

Defensive tackle Ricky Jean Francois, the last man to start in place of Justin Smith, reportedly will visit the 49ers this week as he wades into free agency.
Whether Smith again needs a replacement remains the great unknown, as the 49ers await word on whether he'll retire or return for a 15th season.
Whether Jean Francois remains a versatile, run-stopping lineman is what the 49ers must weigh as they begin their offseason moves.
Jean Francois is also expected to make a free-agent visit to Washington and its new general manager, Scot McCloughan, who drafted Jean Francois onto the 49ers in 2009 with a seventh-round draft pick. The NFL Network first reported Jean Francois' plans, and because he was released Monday by the Colts, he is allowed to sign with any team before normal free agency begins March 10.
Jean Francois became a popular 49ers during his four-season tenure, both with on-field versatility as well as off-field jocularity that included his "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" dance.
He got released by the Colts midway through a $22 million contract that was to pay him $5.5 million in base salary this year. He averaged nearly two tackles per game in his Colts tenure (54 tackles in 26 games, 23 starts) with 5 1/2 sacks.
During his 49ers career, Jean Francois had only three sacks in four seasons , including one against Tom Brady after Smith sustained a torn triceps. Smith missed the next two games and Jean Francois started in his place, until the playoffs began. Jean Francois had two tackles in 21 snaps in the Super Bowl XLVII to the Baltimore Ravens.
The 49ers defensive line could use depth after already bidding farewell to long-time starter Ray McDonald and possibly Smith. Jean Francois would likely compete for an inside role, where Glenn Dorsey and Ian Williams are trying to return after 2014 injuries. Also on the line are Quinton Dial, Tony Jerod Eddie, Tank Carradine, Kaleb Ramsey, Mike Purcell, Lawrence Okoye and Garrison Smith.

One of the winners of the NFL Scouting Combine has been new 49ers coach Jim Tomsula, whose tenure got off to a shaky public unveiling last month in Santa Clara.
Tomsula had a near-disastrous introductory press conference and appearance on Yahoo! SportsTalk Live, which provided fodder for a Jimmy Kimmel monologue.
But on Thursday, Tomsula fought off a cough to deliver a well-paced Q&A session in front of the national media that was more consistent with his reputation as down-to-earth and folksy.
Tomsula opened his media gathering with a reference to his first press conference. “Let’s try this again,” he quipped.

Jim Tomsula said it is "ridiculous" to think he undermined former 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh.
"First of all, there's nothing to that, it's ridiculous,'' Tomsula said to Bay Area reporters at the NFL scouting combine. "Second of all, if anybody needs to talk, give me a buzz. OK? That's all.''
Tomsula, who made no mention of Harbaugh in his first press conference, said Thursday he is unaware of any problems with their relationship.
"Jim Harbaugh and his staff, which I was part of, won a lot of football games for the San Francisco 49ers,'' Tomsula said. "I don't have a negative word to say about any of that. It was all positive. We all didn't get it done last year at 8-8. I guess that's where I'm at with it. I don't see where there's something there.''
Asked if there was any part of Harbaugh style he would adopt as his own, Tomsula said, "Obviously, his animation, the way he came in to practice and the energy . . . Jim was on offense more, I was on defense meeting-wise. You saw Jim. Jim loves football. He loves the game and loves to compete.''
Here is what else Tomsula said in his session with Bay Area media, according to colleague Jerry McDonald:
Q: At one point did you think you could be next head coach of the 49ers?Tomsula: When I was asked to interview, and that was exciting. As we were going through it, what was it, 10 days? The process. There was some time there. I really wasn't sure exactly how it was going to go, to be honest. then I got offered the job. AS it went on, you're looking into it, and when I met the second time, the second interview, I said, hey, I might be in this.
Q: Even in 2010 after the one week, did you think after that, maybe I'm not going to do it in 2011 but at some point I'll be a head coach . . .
Tomsula: No, I didn't. That was one week. Know what I mean? that was just getting some schedules together and getting into a game. When I interviewed in Minnesota, and that wasn't even an interview, because we were getting ready to play Carolina, and they were down in Charlotte, that was a cup of coffee, is what that was. And those guys, I got a lot of respect for those guys and I appreciated talking to them. That was kind of cool. I mean, it didn't go anywhere. You know the guys I coach. I just enjoy doing that.
Q: With all the speculation that went on all season about the status of the head coach, and then to know get through that, get through first press conference, and now the combine, does everything feel fresh . . . does it feel like a new start for you and this team?
Tomsula: Yeah. My job started when I got hired. I pretty much have been in that mindset since I was hired. Getting the staff together and getting everybody put together that way and personnel and getting going. That's pretty much the way I've personally felt since I was hired.
Q: Steve Logan has talked on his radio show how much he loves athletic, mobile quarterbacks. A lot of speculation how much Colin will run in this offense . . .
Tomsula: You guys that have been around me, speculation and all that stuff, I'm not good with. I don't have facts for you yet. OK, we're still in the middle of all that. Colin Kaepernick, I don't think there's any secret that his legs work really well. But so does his arm. So does his brain. So do his eyes. Steve Logan talking about how he loves athletic quarterbacks, I've known Steve Logan for awhile, I never met a quarterback Steve Logan didn't like. So he likes athletic guys, but he likes 'em all. That's what's cool about Logan. He's an all-in guy. It's just, looking at the unique set of skills Colin has and let's get going within the framework of the rest of our team. We've got a pretty good offensive line. Good running backs. Tight ends, wide receivers. I mean, we've got players. That's what's going on right now. That's what the guys are doing. They're evaluating players and trying to look exactly at what we have and how do we use this.
Q: Do you believe a QB has to consistently be able to make plays with his arm?
Tomsula: Yes. He's got to be able to make plays with his arm. And our quarterback can. Colin can make plays with his arm. I'm terribly excited about Colin Kaepernick. Extremely excited about Colin Kaepernick.
Q: Why? What givesyyou that feeling?
Tomsula: The guy, first of all. The guy I go to work and see every day. The guy that's there, that trains like crazy. It's so important to him, and you put that with his skills set. And he's a guy to deal with from a defensive standpoint.
Q: Jed came out and said we're going to make better use of Colin's legs . . .
Tomsula: That is the owner, right? the word better, I'm not into comparisons. I'm not into any of that. We want to use the total package that Colin has. That's what we're going to do. Does that mean Colin Kaepernick is going to be the leading rusher every week? No. No plans on that at all. Let's use everything we have, like we have done. Let's not act like that hasn't happened either. The Niners were 8-8 last year. We were all a part of that. So that's my big deal with that.
Q: You seem to be such a gritty, get your hands dirty, defensive line coach, do you lose that aspect of coaching as a head coach?
Tomsula: I hope not. To me, it changes, again I refer to back to my experiences as head coach, I know it wasn't the NFL, but no, there's other things you put your hands on. It's in a broader sense, but it's all personal relationships in my opinion. You do that with seven guys or 12 guys in a defensive line room, then as a coordinator you do it with more, and now it's 53. I think you just put your hands on in different ways.
Q: Saw Singletary gravitate towards linebackers, Harbaugh quarterbacks, will you spend a lot of time with the D-line?
Tomsula: No. Obviously, you see the staff we've put together and I think anybody that knows the Niners, knows me, you're looking at the staff and saying, OK, you pretty much put the pieces of that puzzle together. We've got a really good staff that fits together like a puzzle in my opinion, and there was a lot of time and energy spent with that, thinking that through. No, I'm not going to coach the defensive line. Am I going to see it and be around it? I would think naturally I'll be around but no, we've got guys to do that.
Q: How is that puzzle put together?
Tomsula: Just the goal being, trying to put a coaching team together. Everybody works together. Get around the table. You talk offensively and you see the coaches that are around the table. There are a lot of ideas. There's a lot of experiencing. There are a lot of guys that have done a lot of things. OK, so, let's put that thing together. Then you've got a Geep Chryst to coordinate that. Not necessarily dictate that, but coordinate that. Now you go to defense and take a look at the experience on that side of the ball and all the guys sitting around that table. And Eric to coordinate that. Now obviously you've got someone that's the lead and that's the structure. But that's the way I see this thing fitting. That's what I'm really, really excited about.
Q: You may have lost the Super Bowl because you couldn't get a play in on time, get the snap off on time, and that was something that was four years, a lot of that. How do you clean that up so the simple mechanics of getting the ball to the quarterback, getting the playoff, is not as cumbersome?
Tomsula: I don't want to get into comparison, OK, because however we were doing it, we won a lot of games. Nothing but respect to that. But moving forward, for us, we're looking at all that right now. That's what's happening in Santa Clara right now. Getting through the mechanics and the vocabulary, and how we operate and going through those things.
Q: Will Geep be up (in the coaches box) or down (on the field)?
Tomsula: Up.
Q: What was appealing as Eric as D-coordiantor. Hasn't run a defense since 2005 but has seen all kinds of different parts of the game since then?
Tomsula: Yes. I think you answered you question a little bit. When you talk about seeing all the different parts of the game, and you talk, again, this is the third time I'm saying this now, and he's going to be really upset with me, some of the best times I've spent with Eric are talking football while we're on the ellyptical while we're trying to lose a few pounds. After practice, we run into the weight room there and get on and just talking about football, and talking about things. I studied a lot of the New England stuff back then, with the odd defense, and Tedy Bruschi and Vince Wilfork come in and that defensive line. The leverage points and the things they were doing. At the beginning, Eric was in the secondary, and then he became the coordinator there. And you see that going through his coaching stops, that defense. Now there's a few different things, front mechanics-wise and things that we do. But the structure of it comes from the same principles. And with Eric and the way he looks at it, when you get to talking to him, and the way he sees the game, through the players, his schematics for players, and it's not what you know it's what your players know, and those kinds of things. That's what's really neat as you get to know Eric. And he's obvioiusly a bright, bright guy.
Q: What coaches are here?
Tomsula: Geep's here today. The wide receivers. They're in today. We've got defensive guys coming in over the weekend.
Q: Who are they?
Tomsula: I know Tim's coming. I'm not sure. Eric. We have to see how much we've gotten done. But those guys for sure.
What we're doing is we're doing the drawings. We've got drawings going on, and the guys are fitting guys together. X's and O's stuff. As you're starting to get things together. They're back crunching all that stuff. I wanted to make sure the two coordinators got here, and more for the inteviews. The interviews, too. It's only 15 minutes. We just want to open up the conversations. Because then we've got the 30 visits and then we''ll do a little more seeing guys and getting to know guys that way. the decision was made just because of the work we had and we'll be right back to normal next year.
Q: Justin Smith in building, works out, come in and shoots the breeze with you . . .
Tomsula: I like to think he'd like to shoot the breeze anyway. I think he likes me.
Q: but if you're retiring are going to be working out like a madman in the offseason. Are you optimistic?
Tomsula: I really do try to stay neutral on that. I really do. And when I saw that, out of respect to him, he's earned the right to make his decision on his own terms, I sincerely mean that. As a football coach, do you want Justin Smith on your team? Well, hell yes. But I'm not going to go there. I'm not going to do that. I respect that guy man, and 15 years playing the way he plays, at that position, and the way he does it, I'm loyal to him, he's earned that right.
Q: Would you like an answer before free agency?
Tomsula: yeah, I'll tell you what, he's not going to beat around the bush. He's not a beat around the bush guy. Out of respect, and again with most of the guys, I don't really get into too much. The season ends, and everybody needs to decompress how you decompress, player-wise. I mean those guys are on the grind, now. Physically, mentally, emotionally, the whole deal. So always, they hear my voice enough, and they need a break from hearing this voice. Now Just, after the combine, that's when he adn I have always gotten into a legitimate conversation. Where you at and what are you doing?
Q: Has he been close in the past? Wavering?
Tomsula: Honestly, I really mean it when I tell you, I've got to prod to get that kind of information and I honest to God to not prod him. If you know him, prodding doesn't work anyway. That guy is going to make up his own mind. That's a man's man. He's going to make up his own mind. And so I don't prod him or anything. I don't.
Q: Borland and Wilhoite proved themselves to have starting quality. With Willis and Bowman coming back and being healthy, do you just say, well that means we have two really good backups? Can you get creative and find ways to get them on the field?
Tomsula: That's the whole deal. You start talking about the schematic. You start talking about the film we're watching. You've got personnel groups and different schematics. In order to get your best 11 on the field for whatever situation you're in game time or those kinds of things. Those guys are really good football players. Defensive line-wise too, I've told the guys that. Everybody wants to declare the backups. So is Ricky Jean-Francois really the backup, when he was with us? I know in our room we never saw him as the backup. Quenton Dial, backup? Nah, he's a young guy. That's not really the way that we talk about it. There's areas to get you on the field. I'm looking at the secondary all teh time. People talk about that nickel position, but that's like an afterthought. You've got the starting corners and the starting safeties. OK, well, you're in nickel a lot, there's a guy that plays that position. That's just not an area, we're always thinking about guys on the field.
Q: Worried about guy being sick of your voice, giving them some time, is taht same with Aldon, or do you need to touch base with him more often?
Tomsula: When I say that to you, the thing that I mean, Aldon, all the guys. I'm there. Come on by. We're not going to have a football meeting. that's what I'm talking about. I'm not going to get into football. Hey, what you doing, man? I walk in every morning and Pat and Mo are there and I say, good morning. There's Michael Purcell and there's Tank Carradine and there's Quinton Dial, there's Glenn Dorsey. On and on and on and on. And the guy Thomas. What I mean is, you don't walk by and say, hey, you took the wrong 45 degree step. We're not going to talk about that in February. That's what I mean by that. Just give them the space.
Q: You've seen Aldon?
Tomsula: yeah. Couple of weeks ago I saw Aldon at the facility. Yeah. Those guys, they're all doing well. It's a good group.

Dan Quinn, whose first NFL coaching job came in 2001 on Steve Mariucci’s staff, interviewed for the 49ers' head-coaching job shortly after the club and Jim Harbaugh parted ways.
Quinn was the Seattle Seahawks’ defensive coordinator the past two seasons and faced the 49ers five times since the beginning of the 2013 season. The Seahawks were 4-1 against the 49ers and never allowed 20 points or more.
During the interview, which took place in Seattle with the 49ers general manager Trent Baalke, CEO Jed York and president Paraag Marathe, Quinn said he was not put in a position to divulge any Seahawks secrets about how he approaches facing the 49ers' offense.

Defensive lineman Justin Smith, who is contemplating retirement, has been a regular visitor at the 49ers’ Santa Clara facility since the end of the season.
Smith has been seen as recently as this week around the 49ers’ team offices. Known as a dedicated worker, Smith has likely been using the team’s weight room.
The team's offseason program begins on April 6, so Smith is not allowed to work with coaches until that point. Players, however, can use the team's workout facilities. A team's conditioning coaches are not allowed to direct workouts but may supervise use of the weight room.
Smith, a 14-year NFL veteran, apparently has yet to decide whether to return to the 49ers for another season. Smith has one season remaining at $4.25 million on the contract he negotiated for himself in June 2013.

The world leader of sports betting it is probably William Hill and even he probably couldn’t have predicted the implosion of the 49ers. Call me skeptical, pessimistic, but I’ll go with downright realistic.…

The 49ers will hire Adam Henry to be the wide receivers coach, according to reports.
Henry coached LSU’s wide receivers the past three seasons and helped develop Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry in 2012 and 2013.
Good hire. Big upgrade over John Morton, one of the 49ers’ worst position coaches the past four seasons.
Eric Branch’s excellent post on former 49er Eric Davis’ comments goes to the heart of the issue for the 49ers and their new coaching staff. The players have them on notice, and they will have to impress the players immediately.
This is the opposite of when Jim Harbaugh took over for Mike Singletary. Several of Singletary’s assistants were not ready to be NFL coaches. The players knew they were talented, so when Singletary and his staff were dismissed, players were begging to have good coaching and they got it. Players bought in immediately to Harbaugh’s ethic of absurd hard work, and for the most part, coaches delivered on making players better through schemes and their ability to teach technique.

Pro Football Hall of Fame wideout Jerry Rice called for an asterisk if the Patriots were to win the Super Bowl, but on the same day, admitted to using an illegal substance when he played called stickum.
"I know this might be a little illegal, guys, but you put a little spray, a little stickum on [gloves], to make sure that texture is a little sticky," Rice said in an ESPN feature on the evolution of gloves.

Geep Chryst’s days as an under-the-radar 49ers assistant are ending.
Chryst is being promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator, two sources told the NFL Network on Wednesday.
The move ends two weeks of speculation in which a slew of candidates reportedly shied away from the 49ers’ overtures. One league source indicated that many such coaches feared the 49ers staff might undergo another overhaul next year if Jim Tomsula flops in his first year as head coach.
It’s been two weeks since Tomsula got elevated from defensive line coach, and the team has not confirmed nor officially announced any staff changes, as is the case with Chryst’s reported promotion.
Taking Chryst’s place as quarterbacks coach is Steve Logan, who has over 35 years experience and was offensive coordinator of the 2006 Rhein Fire in NFL Europe during Tomsula’s only other stint as a head coach.
