The 49ers need Walker, but his long term health has to come first. No doubt him getting hit in practice is an important part of knowing whether or not he can play, and his confidence. How else can you expect him to go over the middle? Even if Walker takes to the field on Sunday, I imagine the new helmet may take time to adjust to, and that could impact his ability to locate the ball.
