The San Francisco 49ers are off to a great start to this season, having just beaten one of the main contenders in the NFC, the Green Bay Packers, at Lambeau Field. Now the Niners will try to knock off another …
The LineEarlier this week San Francisco was pegged as a seven-point favorite over Detroit, with the total lined at 46, and those numbers have held steady in the early betting.
The Lowdown
The Niners completely outplayed the Packers last Sunday, outrushing Green Bay 186-45, holding the ball for 33 minutes and getting a quality performance from QB Alex Smith. Also, while the Packers scored three touchdowns, one came on a punt return (and a missed call) and the last one came with the San Francisco defense playing a little “prevent.”
So give the Niners defense an “A” for Sunday.
That victory might come in handy down the line, should the Niners and Packers get into some tie-breaking situations.
San Francisco won outright Sunday as a six-point underdog, and those who backed the Niners on a moneyline, NFL odds cashed in at a price of +220.
The Lions
Detroit, meanwhile, struggled out of the gate last week with a supposedly inferior opponent, the Rams, but got a late score to escape with a 27-23 victory. The Lions trailed for most of the game, and were down 23-20 with just under two minutes to go, but drove 80 yards to the winning score to avoid the upset bid of St. Louis.
The Lions outgained the Rams 429-250, but QB Matt Stafford threw three interceptions, keeping things interesting.
Detroit, however, did not cover the pointspread as nine-point favorites.
The Last Time These Two Teams Met …
As we recall, the last time the 49ers and Lions met came in Week 6 of last season, at Ford Field, when the Niners scored with less than two minutes to go to win 25-19. But the coaches' handshake after that game became the big news out of that football weekend. We'll have to stay tuned 'till the bitter end Sunday night to see how the handshake goes after this game – if there is one.
San Francisco outrushed Detroit that day 203-66, winning outright as five-point underdogs.
