While the hit from Rams linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar appeared to take a serious toll on Alex Smith, it was actually the fourth-and-1 quarterback sneak that sent the 49ers' quarterback off the field.… Extra Point:
The thing about hits to the head is that their affect is cumulative. Smith may not have gotten hammered as badly on the QB sneak, but couple that with the Dunbar smashing, and suddenly you have a concussion. I don't know if the outcome of the game would have been different with Smith in. Maybe he wouldn't have missed seeing a wide of Kyle Williams... maybe Williams wouldn't have been wide open? Maybe he wouldn't have used his legs to score a touchdown... who knows? The real question is why the 49ers are making the mistakes this year that they weren't last year.
