It was no surprise when the 49ers took a Missouri product with the No. 7 pick. But it wasn’t quarterback Blaine Gabbert. Instead, they tapped junior defender Aldon Smith, who played defensive end for the Tigers but who will be …
Extra Point:I am not at all surprised that the 49ers passed on Gabbert. I don't think he was what the team wanted to build around. Smith was someone I thought the team might look at, but this is still a bit early to be taking him.
Smith is ... yes another A. Smith ... is young and has a huge upside. I think the team was drafting largely based on upside with this pick, and I don't mind that philosophy. It also doesn't surprise me that our offensive coach went defense first. This may be over confidence, or it may be based on the draft board, but I believe Harbaugh/Baalke will give Fangio anything he thinks he needs to stop a mediocre NFC West.
Jake Locker was selected shortly after, he's a guy I thought the 49ers may target at quarterback if he fell far enough.
