Since Alex Boone is young and experienced Joe Looney is only a rookie, a move …
Having being selected to three Pro Bowls, Davis knows what he's doing and he'll immediately provide competition for Boone. Coaches are liking what they're seeing out of Boone, but it never hurts to add someone who's proven he can hang at the highest level.Something was needed up front considering the 49ers are one of the most run-heavy teams out there. With Frank Gore, and new boy Brandon Jacobs, lining up in the backfield, it's always good to have big bodies paving the way and a big body Davis most certainly is.
Providing time for quarterback Alex Smith is also going to be important. Smith will be scrutinized in a major way this season and has some new targets to work with this season, including Randy Moss and Mario Manningham. Michael Crabtree, Kyle Williams and of course tight end Vernon Davis are still around as well.
There's no need to worry about San Francisco's defense.
This unit is completely stacked from top to bottom, starting on the line with Justin Smith, holding strong at linebacker with Patrick Willis, Aldon Smith and NaVorro Bowman and finishing with Dashon Goldson, Donte Whitner and Carlos Rogers in the secondary.
You're not going to find a more talented defense in the league. If everyone manages to stay healthy, the 49ers should continue to shut down opposing offenses in 2012.
Leonard Davis is only one more piece to the puzzle in what Jim Harbaugh is hoping is another successful season in San Francisco. We'll see shortly how it pans out.
