San Francisco lost in the NFC Title game to the eventual champs of the NFL last season, and they are not taking anything for granted this offseason. The Niners have been loading up on talent, and they are looking like the undisputed champs of the NFC West already. The NFL odds agree, as the 49ers are -250 to win the NFC West, and even though it won’t be a stroll down the yellow brick road, their chances of winning that division again and making the playoffs look really good, making one of the top NFL picks to win the big game next season.San Francisco has signed a multitude of offensive weapons to put around Alex Smith, something he didn’t have last season. They pilfered the Giants’ roster by signing Brandon Jacobs and Mario Manningham, and they made a big splash by signing newly un-retired and future hall of famer Randy Moss.
Their defense won’t be a question. It will still be boss. If Aldon Smith can stop getting himself stabbed at parties in San Jose, then they will be almost like a brick wall to running backs.
The questions surround Alex Smith. He played well last season, but when he was up against one of the most imposing defensive lines in football in the NFC Championship game, he wilted away just a bit. Smith was only 12/26 in the title game. He did throw two touchdowns, but a 46% completion percentage in the game to get to the Super Bowl will not cut it, especially when Eli Manning goes 32/58 with 2 touchdowns 0 interceptions and 316 yards in that game. If the Niners want to win a Super Bowl, they will have to continue to play ground and pound, but also be able to light it up from the sky as well.
