Part of the lack of playoff history is due to the teams both formerly belonging to the NFC West. That means that while the 49ers were dominating the division, the Saints would have had to post wild-card worthy records to make it into the playoffs. That being said, there's plenty of history between the two teams - including one game I remember listening to on the radio as a kid, while on a road trip in the back seat of my parents car. One of only 5 losses to Saints in the 1990's.
