Given the NFL draft is full of gambles, the 49ers wanted to double their chancs that the selection of a Trey would work out. So they simply drafted another one.…
It's been a long time since the 49ers drated a running back... maybe that's because the team wanted to be darn sure that Tevin Coleman and Jerrick McKinnon adequately flamed out. Alternatively, it was the success of Raheem Mostert, Matt Breida, Jeff Wilson Jr, and JaMycal Hasty that gave the team comfort, paricularly with the run game ingenunity of Kyle Shanahan. All that changed when the 49ers packaged a couple of 4th picks to move up to the 88th overall selection in a trade with Rams to select Trey Sermon.Aside from having the same first name as first overall selection Trey Lance, he also has a history of hurdling other players - just like 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk. He's superemely athletic and is happy to run people over. He's definitely a good match for the zone run scheme. Not much to dislike about this selection, it's just a bit curious that the 49ers would continue to load a pretty strong backfield when they have more pressing needs - and the knack for finding running backs on the cheap.
