49ers waited until their compensatory pick in the 3rd round to select a defensive player, when they added CB Ambry Thomas from Michigan.…Coming from Michigan there is obviously the fun Harbaugh connection at play - but more importantly the 49ers add to their CB depth a clear area of need with Thomas. Thomas will not be asked to start out of the gate, and definitely plays better outside than in the slot - so there is some development required; not suprising at this point in the draft. But did they also get quality at the selection?
What Thomas does bring to the 49ers is good press coverage, and given how much man coverage the 49ers do play, he's a natural fit for the scheme. Thomas is a former receiver, so he excels at tracking the ball, and crowding / disrupting others - but his tendency to grab speedy guys when he gets beat could be a problem in the NFC West - where every team but the Niners just drafted new speed receivers.
Definitely filling a positon of need for the Niners. The team obviously felt it had enough talent already lined up that it could really focus on depth. Given the injury history, and position turn over in the defensive backfield, I am a bit surprised they didn't try to find an impact player like they did on the offensive side of the ball.
