Everybody loves a good quarterback controversy, but that's not how I read this. The team would be foolish not to protect itself against Smith not signing. They have a value assigned to him, and won't budge on it just like on Takeo Spikes... so they have a contingency. Smith, the team, and the fans should be ok with that.
