Niners Open Super Bowl Quest in Green Bay by SBRForum.com

Last year the San Francisco 49ers, in their first season under Coach Harbaugh, made a jump from going 6-10 in 2010 to 13-3, winning the NFC West and getting within a fumbled punt or so of the Super Bowl. This …

The 49ers begin that quest this Sunday when they travel to Green Bay to take on one of the other main contenders for the NFC title, the Packers, at Lambeau Field (4:25 pm Eastern, Fox).

To review, the Niners took to Coach Harbaugh's style and schemes in a big way last year, although they also benefited from playing a fairly weak schedule. They only played five games vs. teams that eventually made the playoffs, and went 9-2 vs. non-playoff qualifiers. The defense led the way, ranking fourth overall and first vs. the run, while offensively the running game ranked eighth, averaging 128 YPG, and QB Alex Smith had his finest season as a pro.

Over the off-season the Niners went offense with most of their personnel moves, bringing in WRs Randy Moss and Mario Manningham and RB Brandon Jacobs, and using their first two picks in the draft to take Illinois WR AJ Jenkins and Oregon RB LaMichael James.

Over on the other side of this matchup Green Bay went 15-1 last year, then lost its first playoff game to the eventual Super Bowl champion Giants. The Packers, led by that high-powered passing game, ranked third in the league in offense, but only 27th in rushing. Green Bay's real Achilles heel, though, was its defense, which ranked dead last in the league last year, allowing 412 YPG. In an attempt to remedy that situation the Pack went defense with its first six picks in the draft.

Niners-Packers: The Series

San Francisco has lost eight straight times to Green Bay, most recently by a 34-16 score at Lambeau back in 2010. The last Niners victory over the Packers came in that Young-to-Owens playoff game back in 1999.

The Betting Line

Last week many online sportsbooks were listing San Francisco at +7 for Sunday's game, with a total of 45. But as of Thursday morning most NFL odds had dropped the San Francisco 49ers to +5, and bumped the total to 47.
