Late cuts: 49ers eyeing their practice squad



The 49ers are engaging in a bit of gamesmanship. All the players who were released on the eve of the 6 p.m. cut-down deadline appear to be earmarked for…

Extra Point:

The 49ers took an interesting approach to cut down day. They picked up an extra draft pick (I can't recall the last time the Niners did this with a potential cut). They also waited until the last minute to cut the players that they are likely targeting for their practice squad. This isn't a revolutionary idea, but it makes sense. Wait until the market is flooded, and make it as hard as possible for other teams to see what you are doing. Of course, smart teams will also be keeping a keen eye on who is being cut at the last minute... so in many cases all this does is reduces the time teams will have to make a decision on a key player.
