Kyle Shanahan’s Coaching Tree And John Lynch’s Executive Tree A Blessing And A Curse

Kyle Shanahan’s success with the San Francisco 49ers is leading to one of the fastest growing coaching trees in the NFL.…

After leading the 49ers to a Super Bowl victory, Shanahan has seen his influence spread throughout the league. His former assistants have taken over head coaching positions in New York, Miami, and Houston and many more teams are looking to hire coaches who have been part of Shanahan's system. It is clear that his approach to coaching has been successful and he has created a blueprint for success that many teams are now trying to emulate.

Shanahan’s coaching tree, and Lynch's executive tree are both a blessing and curse. While his system (inheritted from his father Mike Shanahan, who learned from the Genius, 49ers Head Coach, Bill Walsh) is flourishing; the 49ers are in constant need of developing and signing new pieces to their coaching puzzle to ensure adequate succession. The San Francisco 49ers have experienced significant coaching staff turnover since the 2019 season. The team lost key coordinators Robert Saleh, DeMeco Ryans, and Mike McDaniel to head coaching and coordinator positions with other teams - along with key front office executives as well. These losses of experienced coaching staff has necessitated a rebuilding process that has required significant investment in developing new talent and restocking the ranks of the coaching staff.

Below is a look at the key staff losses... and while many replacmeents are already hired, the team needs to be looking fowards with a succession plan that can stand up to coach poaching.

Robert Saleh was the 49ers' defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020. He was known for his high-energy coaching style and his ability to motivate players. Saleh was a key factor in the 49ers' success in 2019, when the team made it to the Super Bowl. Aaron Whitecotton went with Saleh as DL coach, as did Tony Oden to coach CB, and Mike Rutenberg to coach the LBs.

In January 2021, Saleh was hired as the head coach of the New York Jets. He took several coaches with him, including passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur. LaFleur was particularly important to the 49ers' offense, as he had been instrumental in developing the team's passing game. LaFleur also brought offensive line coach John Benton with him.

Mike McDaniel was the 49ers' run game coordinator in 2019 and 2020. He was known for his expertise in zone-blocking schemes and was instrumental in the success of the team's rushing attack. In January 2021, McDaniel was hired as the offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins.

DeMeco Ryans was the 49ers' inside linebackers coach in 2018 and 2019, before being promoted to defensive coordinator in 2020. He took over the role from Robert Saleh and helped lead the defense to a top-five ranking in the league. In January 2021, Ryans was hired as the defensive coordinator for the Houston Texans. Ryans is bringing Bobby Slowick in to be the Texans offensive coordinator. Cory Undlin the 49ers defensive backs coach will follow Ryans as well. He also brings with him Nick Ray, 49ers Chief Of Staff.

Shane Day was the quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers from 2017-2019, working closely with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo during that time. After the 2019 season, Day left the 49ers to become the quarterbacks coach for the Los Angeles Chargers.

Michael Clay was hired by the 49ers in 2017 as the assistant special teams coach, and he played a role in the development of the team's standout special teams unit. In 2021, he was hired as the Eagles' special teams coordinator, marking a step up in his career.

Katie Sowers joined the 49ers in 2017 as an intern on the offensive side of the ball. She quickly rose through the ranks and became the team's first full-time female coach in 2019. Sowers made significant contributions to the development of the team's wide receivers and played a key role in the 49ers' Super Bowl run that year. She left the team in 2020 to pursue other opportunities and to continue to inspire and empower young women in football.

Stan Kwan was hired by the San Francisco 49ers as an assistant special teams coach in 2017. He served in the same role until 2020, after which he was not retained by the team. Prior to joining the 49ers, Kwan had coached in the NFL for over two decades, including a stint as the special teams coordinator for the Buffalo Bills.

Jeff Zgonina was the defensive line coach for the San Francisco 49ers from 2017 to 2019. He played a key role in developing the team's pass rush and helped guide players like DeForest Buckner and Nick Bosa to Pro Bowl seasons. After leaving the 49ers, he joined the coaching staff of the Washington Football Team as their defensive line coach in 2020.

Joe Woods joined the 49ers coaching staff as the defensive backs coach in 2019, and played a key role in the team's success in reaching the Super Bowl that year. He was hired as the defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns after the season, where he has continued to build a strong defense.

Jeff Hafley served as the San Francisco 49ers defensive backs coach from 2016 to 2018. During his tenure, he helped develop young talent like Ahkello Witherspoon and Adrian Colbert. In 2019, he left the 49ers to become co-defensive coordinator at Ohio State, where he helped lead the Buckeyes to the College Football Playoff in his first season.

On the Executive Side, the 49ers have lost Ran Carthon was the 49ers’ director of pro personnel from 2017 to 2021. His departure from the team came as a surprise to many in the NFL community, as he had been with the organization for several years and was highly regarded for his scouting abilities.

Martin Mayhew was also a significant losst to the the team as he departed to Washington. Mayhew was a very senior executive in the 49ers front office and was credited with playing a key role in the team's draft strategy and in helping to identify and acquire key free agents.

The 49ers have begun to fill some of this years key gaps with the promotion of Brian Fleurly to offenisve coodinator (expected) and Steve Wilks to defensive coordinator. Brian Fleury has been promoted to offensive coordinator for the 49ers, and Steve Wilks has been hired as the team's new defensive coordinator. Fleury has been with the 49ers since 2019, serving as the team's passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach, and was instrumental in the development of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Meanwhile, Wilks has extensive experience coaching defense in the NFL, including stints as the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals, as well as a brief tenure as the head coach of the Panthers.
