SANTA CLARA – This afternoon at Jim Harbaugh’s Monday press conference, I asked him two questions about Alex Smith. Here they are, followed by Harbaugh’s responses.

Alex has taken his understanding of the offense to a completely different level. Last year it seemed he, Gore, and Walker were ahead of everyone else, now it seems like Alex is the guy who is directing the offense, and understands it best hands down. Nothing taken away from Gore, Walker, or anyone. Smith just knows it that well, and has such a good appreciate for how defenses are trying to stop it. His touchdown to Davis was a great example of that. It was just a perfect understanding of both sides of the ball.
