The one cog in the 49ers offseason has finally been resolved, as pro bowl safety Dashon Goldson has signed his $6.62 million franchise tender. He reported to camp this morning. Will this improve the 49ers NFL odds anymore than they …
Goldson played last season on the franchise tag, and the 49ers and he did not reach an agreement on a long-term extension before the deadline. Goldson was offered a 5-year $25 million deal at the time, however, he turned it down. Some have speculated that Goldson will not be too happy playing this season on a one-year contract, but those same reports say that Goldson is looking for a contract similar to what Eric Weddle (5 years $40 million) or Michael Griffin (5 years $36 million) got. However, he will have to wait until next offseason to continue talks for that kind of money, whether it is with San Francisco or another team.
Goldson has been very good for the Niners, which adds to the argument that he deserves a multi-year deal. Goldson had 6 interceptions last season on his first franchise season, which doesn’t help the 49ers in any future negotiations if he has a similar season in 2012. Only cornerback Carlos Rodgers had as many interceptions for the 49ers, as he had 6 as well.
Either way, this is solid news for the 49ers and their fans. Goldson is probably the most important secondary player for the Niners, and his ability to get interceptions away from the ball will be key if the Niners want to return to the NFC Championship game.
