… As the San Francisco 49ers get ready to embark on the new season last year’s SuperBowl runners-up are already installed as short odds favorites with most sportsbooks to win the NFC West and the conference again this year, with many also predicting that they will finally take the final step and win the SuperBowl.
Given the strength last year of their defense, 3rd in total yards per game, and 2nd in defense allowing just 17.1 points per game and no signs that this won’t continue to be their main strength, a key to the 49ers’ season will be how their offense shapes up. Central to this will be the performance of quarterback Colin Kaepernick who came into the team in dramatic circumstances when Alex Smith was hurt (he has now departed), but then went on to dominate for the rest of the regular season. All eyes will be on whether he can repeat his performance of last season, where he threw over 2600 yards for 14 touchdowns, with only 5 interceptions and rushed for over 500 yards and another 5 TDs.
However, there are some concerns about San Francisco’s running game which have been exacerbated by the Achilles tendon injury to Michael Crabtree which will keep him on the sidelines for the entire season. His replacement Anquan Boldin, is not a question mark, but who will line up opposite Boldin? They are all unproven as starting receiver which could put added pressure on Kaepernick and the running backs; although Frank Gore looks set to have another stellar year after his 1,214 yards rushing and eight touchdowns last season.
In the most recent pre-season game against the Kansas City Chiefs the signs looked good for the 49ers in their 15-13 win although this was very much an experimental outing with reserve quarterbacks calling most of the plays. Nevertheless, rookie receiver Chuck Jacobs showed something in making a great catch in the end zone for a touchdown with 3 minutes to go, and there were strong defensive performances from Michael Wilhoite, free safety Craig Dahl and Perrish Cox. Particularly enjoyable for San Francisco fans was the sacking of former quarterback Smith, now with Kansas City, on the first play of the Chiefs’ second drive of the night.
So what does this form and personnel mean for the San Francisco in the NFL Futures market? Almost every sportsbook has them as favorites to win the NFC for the third consecutive year, with a considerable number also installing them as SuperBowl favorites. There is some good value here and although it’s a long season and a lot can happen between now and the SuperBowl XLVIII, at this stage a Futures bet on San Francisco finally to win it all would appear to represent some decent value.
