Free agent position analysis - outside linebacker Departing: Manny Lawson , signed one-year $3 million deal in Cincinnati. Arriving: Antwan Applewhite from San Diego, terms unknown. Better, worse or draw: Applewhite will rotate with Parys Haralson , Ahmad Brooks and… Extra Point:
Applewhite straight up for Lawson is a drop of talent. Lawson did not live up to his hype as a pass rusher, but did everything else well - and could eliminate some of the top tight ends in the game. The 49ers will need Smith to step up to that role. Looking at Applewhite as a guy who can compete with Haralson and Brooks - he should add some depth and security, and may find some playing time if he can get to the quarterback.
