A friend of my dad’s had an inside look at Jim Harbaugh and Alex Smith at the AT&T golf at Pebble Beach last month.

I still don't think the Harbaugh Smith relationship would fall apart. We are talking about Peyton Manning here, not Josh Johnson. Moreover, Smith has Harbaugh to credit for his turn around in the NFL, and he will be thankful of that. If Manning does not come to the 49ers, my best is they throw Smith a 4 year deal and bring him back, and he'll be happy to come back.
