Alex Smith to Chiefs According To Reports

Various sources are following up on a Jay Glazer report that the Alex Smith trade (which cant be finalized until the league year begins March 12th) is with the Kansas City Chiefs. Most recent indications are that the 49ers will …

The Alex Smith story has been one of the most interesting in the NFL over the past two years. Smith, on the cusp of being a total draft day bust, after being selected first overall in 2007 and receiving over $40 million in compensation, turned his career around under coach Jim Harbaugh. Together the two lead the team to the NFC Championship Game last season - and were a couple of mistakes away from the Super Bowl. This year, Smith's accuracy and decision making got the 49ers off to a hot start, but a concussion stopped Smith in his tracks after playing some of the best football of his career. Colin Kaepernick stepped in at quarterback while Smith recovered, and his performance prevented the 49ers from giving Smith another chance.

The story has so many different layers to it and was covered extensively by NFL.com: - From Bust To Greatness
- Smith The Game Manager
- Smith's Success A Function Of Harbaugh's Excellence
- Losing A Starting Job Due To Injury
- Concussion Rules In the NFL
- The Read Option Quarterback

All of these layers made for an interesting story to follow all season, and it now looks to be culminating via this trade. The 49ers of course maintain that they can hold both Smith and Kaepernick on their roster from a salary perspective, but to do right by Smith they are unlikely to do so - even if it would give them the strongest Quarterback Duo in the league. Given Smith's imminent departure, the team will have to add some depth behind Kaepernick and be a bit more selective in how they protect the athletic quarterback.
