49ers sign DT Javon Hargrave

The 49ers announced the signing of defensive tackle Javon Hargrave.…

The lucrative four-year deal worth $84 million, including a $23 million signing bonus and $40 million in total guarantees. Hargrave's contract also features two void years, with a cap hit of only $6.6 million in 2023.

This signing is a major win for the 49ers, as they secured one of the league's top defensive tackles. Hargrave, who spent his six-year career with the Philadelphia Eagles, has proven himself to be a dominant force on the interior of the defensive line. His 10.5 sacks in 2022 ranked third among all NFL defensive tackles.

The 49ers' decision to sign Hargrave addresses a critical spot on their defense, as they always are looking to strengthen the defensive line. Alongside defensive end Nick Bosa and Arik Armstead, Hargrave's addition provides San Francisco with a formidable pass-rushing trio that could terrorize opposing quarterbacks. Defensive lineman Kevin Givens to a one-year deal today as well, the restrictred free agent returns to the 49ers after showcasing his talents as a run stopper.

However, the signing of Hargrave also highlights the concern surrounding the team's 2020 first-round pick, Javon Kinlaw. While the 49ers were hopeful that Kinlaw would emerge as a dominant force on their defensive line, he has yet to realize his potential. Kinlaw's inconsistent play, coupled with his ongoing knee issues, leaves a significant void in the middle of the defensive line.

The 49ers' decision to sign Hargrave to a deal with two void years shows their commitment to building a strong defense, but it also raises questions about Kinlaw's future with the team. With Kinlaw's struggles, Hargrave's arrival could push the former South Carolina standout further down the depth chart.

Overall, the signing of Javon Hargrave is a significant move for the 49ers, but it also highlights the concern surrounding Kinlaw's development. If Kinlaw can't find a way to tap into his immense potential, the 49ers' defensive line may continue to be a revolving door. Nonetheless, with a talented line to begin with, this move is icing on the cake... and you can bet the team isn't done strengthening the defensive line yet.
