For the 3rd consecutive year, the 49ers selected a tweener defensive lineman. There will be questions about the pick, but not the trade that landed the 49ers in the 3rd overall spot.…
The 49ers were convincing enough that they may select a quarterback, or trade down with a team that would, that the Bears moved up just one spot - and in exchange gave the 49ers full value for the pick. In moving down to the third overall selection the 49ers swapped 1st round picks, and gained the Bears 2017 - 3rd and 4th round picks. In addition the team gained the Bears 3rd round pick next year. While there was a run on quarterbacks in the first round, which was reasonably surprising given the lack of perceived strength in the first round quarterback class, the 49ers selected Solomon Thomas - from Stanford. A nice story of course, when a player from a local school finds their way to the 49ers.
In adding Thomas, the 49ers have spent a first round pick on the defensive line for three consecutive seasons. Although every position on the 49ers needs help, it's hard to fathom that Thomas will be a three down player for the team in his rookie season. Though talented, there are questions about his size, and obviously the fit with the 49ers who have inversted heavily on the defensive line recently.
Arguably Thomas was the player in the 49ers sights all along at number two. I have to say I was hoping the team would move down again after the first trade, as I really thought the value trade off really started to make sense outside of the top 5. That being said, ovearll the 49ers made out with great value from one pick and have enough ammo now to do as they please in this year's draft - and are setting up next year well too.
