49ers release Josh Johnson; Tolzien wins No. 3 QB job

This is a portion of a syndicated post. Read the original at www.csnbayarea.com or scroll down the Extra Point.

Josh Johnson threw two touchdown passes and rushed for 50 yards vs. the Chargers Thursday, but it wasn't enough to earn him a roster spot. Scott Tolzien won the battle to be the team's third-string quarterback.… Extra Point:

I thought it was a bit of a reach for the team to keep 4 quarterbacks - but could make for some interesting trade bait. Having got a full look at Johnson, I think the team felt that Tolzien had more upside, and was a better backup to Alex Smith than Johnson was. It was clear that Johnson was not as accurate as Smith, Tolzien or Kaepernick, but had more athleticism than Tolzien. The Niners starting quarterback is primed for being accurate, so it stands to reason that the team would want a backup who could step in and be as similar to their starter as possible. Kaepernick is not that, but Tolzien brings some of those qualities. Tolzien also has acted the part from a leadership standpoint, and has a better handle on the offense having been in it for a year. The move however, ends much of the talk about whether Harbaugh really wants Johnson on his team - having coached him in the college ranks.
