The only way Alex Smith is not a 49er next season is if they trade him. The only way that happens is if there is a reasonable back up available, or they land a Drew Brees / Peyton Manning / Tom Brady like player (yah... not gonna happen). Smith may not start next season, but he will be a 49er.
