49ers’ Moody eyeing chance to replace Willis

This is a portion of a syndicated post. Read the original at San Francisco 49ers or scroll down the Extra Point.

Nick Moody, a backup his first two seasons, is arguably having the best training camp among the vast replacements in the 49ers lineup.… Extra Point:
With Chris Borland in the mix, the loss of Patrick Willis was heavy, but didn't seem insurmountable. With Borland also leaving the game, the Niners were left wondering... do they have the depth to survive? While the team has been written off by basically every channel possible - and perhaps rightfully so... a 3-year old investment in Nick Moody may be a key component of the Willis&Borland replacement plan.

Moody is a very hard hitter, who has had 2-years to adjust to the NFL. This offseason he has focussed more heavily on the fundamentals of the position, and with Willis, Borland, Bowman, and Wilhoite practising less - or not at all, doors have opened for you the young linebacker. A former safety, Moody has the skills to make plays on the ball, but he will have to prove stout in the run game too in order to win a starting role. This Saturday, in the exhibition opener will be our first opportunity to see how adjusted Moody is... and whether the Niners are in as tough as a spot as the laundry list of team exodus would suggest.
