Matt Ryan could be released this offseason and would make an interesting candidate as a 3rd string QB if the 49ers can afford him.…
Ryan's experience and leadership could be invaluable to the 49ers' young quarterback room. With Trey Lance and Brock Purdy, having a veteran like Ryan to provide guidance and mentorship could be incredibly beneficial - just as it was with Jimmy G. Ryan has demonstrated his leadership qualities throughout his career, having served as a team captain for the Falcons for several years, and has also been praised for his work ethic and preparation.Secondly, Ryan's skillset is well-suited to the 49ers' offensive system. The 49ers run a predominantly run-based offense, with a heavy emphasis on play-action passes and bootlegs. Ryan has shown throughout his career that he is comfortable in this type of system, having played under Kyle Shanahan when he was the Falcons coodidntor. Ryan had arguably his best season in 2016 when Shanahan was his coordinator, throwing for 4,944 yards and 38 touchdowns en route to winning the NFL MVP award.
Finally, Ryan's ability to step in and perform at a high level in the event of an injury to Lance or Prudy. Ryan, has also been durable throughout his career, having missed only three games due to injury since becoming a full-time starter in 2008.
Of course, there are potential drawbacks to signing Ryan as a 3rd string QB. His salary would likely be high, given his experience and productivity, and the 49ers may not have the financial flexibility to afford him given some of the other players that they are trying to lock up this offseason. He would have to be motivated to come to the 49ers. Additionally, Ryan is 36 years old and may be entering the twilight of his career, so the 49ers would need to consider whether he is a long-term solution at the position.
