March is half way done, and the NFL Draft then is just a hop, skip, and two jumps away. How exciting! The most recent causes for excitement are of course the pro day workout of Alex Smith, Carlos Rodgers, and Braylon Edwards. In what was shaping up as a draft with no bona fide number one pick, it now appears that three players are emerging from the shadows to fight for this position. If their workouts are anything to bank on, they might even be worthy of those picks.

NFL scouts reported quite highly of these players from their workouts. Of course we still do not know if these players are actually worthy of being draft at number one, or if scouts and agents are just trying to increase the market value for these players. Either way, it plays into the 49ers hands, so long as Mike Nolan and crew explore the possibilities smartly.

I have seen it over and over again. A player has an outstanding workout, at a combine or on their own pro day, and their stock shoots up. That appears to be the case with these three players, whether they warrant the pick or not. If the 49ers are smart, they can really use this to their advantage.

As a result of these workouts the 49ers appear to finally have two different moves that could make this a successful draft. Unlike before the 49ers can now pick any of these three players, and tout the line that the player is amazing prospect that will be groomed into a star player. That these players have all the talent, and that they have done their homework, and truly are legitimate. Also, unlike before, as the stock of these players rise, the 49ers have the option of trading down, whereas before it would have been much harder to find someone wanting to gamble and trade up to get one of these men. The recent workouts then, work to the 49ers benefit no matter which way they go.

The 49ers really have just two decisions left to make. They need to seriously consider each of these prospects and how likely they are to succeed in the NFL, and then decide if they will use the pick on one of these players as a result, or trade down and hope to get another top prospect somewhere else.

So what is revolutionary here? Did the 49ers not have these possibilities before? Sure they did. The team could easily have picked a player and with a little more effort have traded down before… The difference is, now the team will be applauded no matter which decision it makes. Yes, there will be second guessing as there always is, but those that second guess the move will no longer be able to argue that the team took the worst option available. Instead, it appears that every option is a win for the 49ers.

In the coming weeks the 49ers will have two tough decisions to make, but after these workouts, and the very popular and encouraging reports that have come out of them, it appears that the team is in a much better situation to make a good decision than they were before. Amazing. The power of one workout.
