If there is one book every 49ers fan must read it is Building A Champion, By: Bill Walsh. This book is as close to a 49ers bible as you can get. Former 49ers Head Coach, President, and General Manager – in combination with renowned sports writer Glenn Dickey do a masterful job describing the construction of the five time Super Bowl Champions, the San Francisco 49ers.

Walsh is widely regarded as “The Genius” for his work in football. He is a master motivator, has a keen eye for talent and player evaluation, and created an offensive system that remains prevalent to this day. The descendents of coaches with Walsh lineage currently in the NFL touches nearly every NFL team in some way. In this book, Walsh coveys how it all began, why it was successful, and establishes a model on which nearly any organization can be built.

Whether you are an avid 49ers fan or football fan, or just a manager looking to rally your troops – this books is an absolute must read. From cover to cover, Walsh describes his work with the 49ers in a way that makes you want to read the book in one sitting. The book follows Walsh through key decisions such as building the team, motivating the players, finding the right mix of chemistry, calling the right plays, implementing a scheme, and building his staff.

Even the drafting procedure that Walsh implemented with the 49ers is reviewed in this book – and in particular Walsh documents the entire decision surrounding drafting the legendary Jerry Rice. From watching film in his hotel room, to working with his advisors, it is all there.

Walsh’s three Super Bowl victories are catalogues as are the seasons that lead the Niners to build a dynasty. He categorically details every key decision that had to be made along the way, using anecdotes to illustrate his points.

Bill Walsh brought success to the 49ers, he brought a new era of Championship expectations to the team. Expectations that despite all the years and coaching changes since his departure have not eroded. Bill Walsh built the 49ers community, a team, a staff, a system, an organization – but more importantly a community. Organization shifts today emphasize the importance of moving forward, which is very true – but the foundation that Walsh built will always be a part of the 49ers.

This book is simply a must read for any football fan, but especially for every 49ers fan. The book really provides valuable insight into how the 49ers dynasty was built and had success in great detail. Lessons learned that are still applicable today, Walsh did it right. Every 49ers fan should educate themselves by reading this book and understanding what it takes to build a championship caliber club.
