Joe Montana: Simply the Best

Joe Montana, the comeback kid. Many believe he is the best to play the game, other will argue differently, but there is no argument in saying he is ONE of the best QB's to play the game. Joe Montana was the quarterback who made the 49ers. He ran the Bill Walsh offense to near perfection. I have made this page in honor of the greatest (in my opinion) QB of all time, who lead his team to 4 Super Bowl Championships and boasts 3 Super Bowl MVP's.

Joe Montana was born in New Eagle and raised in Monogahela (outskirts of Pittsburgh in West Pennsylvania). From day one he had a winning spirit, in all sports he played. When he was young his father used to play sports with him. In football they would work on his accuracy and timing by throwing footballs through swinging tires. When Joe was 8 years old his father signed him up to play little league football.

In 1974 after playing high school ball it was time to go to college. Notre Dame offered him a Football scholarship, at the time they were the NCAA champions in football. He was also offered a basketball scholarship by UCLA, the NCAA champions in basketball. Despite being advised not to attend Notre Dame, Joe decided he wanted to play for his and his father's favorite team, Notre Dame. There he wore the number 3 proudly on his chest. Though it took a while until he was permitted to start, once he got started, he never stopped.

1979, Joe Montana's graduating year and the year he would enter the draft. The 49ers called Joe in to evaluate, Bill Walsh had this to say when reminiscing about that day. "Joe was the last quarterback we looked at. The minute I saw him drop back- his quick movement, those quick, nimble, Joe Namath-type feet - I got very serious." Bill Walsh elected to draft Joe in the 3rd round, 82nd overall. This 82nd pick was one of the 2 best in 49ers history.

Joe Montana played as #19&16 for many years with the 49ers before he was traded to KC. He played until the end of 1992 (when he only played one game, a win against Detroit). When he arrived in KC Joe decided it would be #19 that he would wear and finish his career as.

Joe Montana has many records and statistics to boast: Throughout his career he started 187/215 games. He completed 3409/5391 passes not including the playoffs. He threw for 40,551 yds. also not including the playoffs. He threw 55 Td's to Jerry Rice. He ranks #2 in passing rating, #3 in pass completion?s and regular season victories, #4 in passing yards, TD passing, and pass attempts. And these are only some of his incredible statistics.

In closing I would like to wish Joe the best of luck in the future. He is my favorite player, and truly a class act. I have always found it interesting the numbers he wore; 3, 19, 16, and 19 again. The digit in the ones column is always a multiple of 3, maybe it's his favorite number. All I have left to say is "Joe Montana, simply the best."
