In the NFL, people always like to talk about overall parity. There are plenty
of good teams every single year in the league, but for some reason, the NFC
West seems to be loaded heading into the 2014 season. …
In fact, even though San Francisco is considered one of the 5 best teams overall heading into the new year, the fact of the matter is they could realistically not when the division or even earn a playoff spot if they do not play at their highest level. Everything starts in the NFC West with the Seattle Seahawks. They were able to not only eliminate San Francisco in the playoffs last year, but they went on to win the Super Bowl. They have been anchored by one of the best fantasy football defenses in the NFL, and they also have a pretty balanced offense. They had to make some changes this offseason, and that could leave them vulnerable enough for the 49ers to pounce.Arizona was the best team record wise to not make the playoffs a year ago. They have some talented fantasy football standouts on their roster, but the biggest thing holding them back is the lack of a true franchise quarterback. Yes, Carson Palmer is doing an adequate job at the helm, but he is not the long-term solution for the team in general.
Finally, there are plenty of people predicting that the St. Louis Rams will be able to take a step forward with all of their young talent. Sam Bradford is going to be healthy and ready to go once again, and they seem to have made several improvements around him on both sides of the ball. All 3 of these teams are capable of getting the best of San Francisco, but of course 49ers will be up for the challenge.
Any way you slice it, San Francisco is not going to be cruising to the playoffs like some other dominant teams around the NFL. All they can hope for is that their key players stay healthy and out of trouble, and the rest of the division stays mostly a small step behind. A poor start to the regular season could be devastating when every game matters so much within the division.
