The 2014 season was not a very good one for the San Francisco 49ers. They thought they would be competing for a chance to possibly make a Super Bowl run, but they were not even close to making the playoffs. …
A lot of factors go into that, but more than a few people are pointing at Colin Kaepernick. He certainly had a pretty tough year, as anyone in weekly fantasy football leagues could tell you. With that being said, he is still young enough to turn things around. The question is, will he be bouncing back in 2015?After the end of last season, the regression narrative certainly surrounded Kaepernick. He made a splash early on in his career when given an opportunity to start, but he has slowly but surely started to struggle more and more. A lot of people feel like defenses now know how to stop him, so he is not nearly as effective. That could be the case, but other factors could be going into his struggles.
In 2014, there were a lot of changes to the offensive line in San Francisco. The team struggled as a unit in that area, and that led to a total of six touchdowns called back due to penalties. It was clear he had less time to make decisions as well, as he threw more interceptions compared to the year before, and he was sacked a total of 13 more times.
Losing head coach Jim Harbaugh is definitely going to throw a new wrinkle into things heading in 2015. Yes, he preferred to run the ball quite a bit, but it is the offense Kaepernick is used to. It will take time to adjust to new head coach Jim Tomsula, but Kaepernick will catch a bit of a break as Geep Chryst takes over as the offensive coordinator.
Torrey Smith replaces Michael Crabtree, and many see that as an upgrade at wide receiver. The opportunity is going to be there for Kaepernick to bounce back, but he needs to do his part. With a focus during the offseason on becoming more polished, he might just pull it off. He won’t be a top tier quarterback by any means to start the year, but we could be seeing vintage Kaepernick by the middle of the season.
