The 49ers took a bit of a risk in drafting cornerback Tarell Brown who has some character red flags, and some injury history. The payoff for this fifth found pick could be huge though as he is a first or second round talent at corner. The 49ers have been looking to add some depth to the cornerback spot because of the age of Walt Harris, and the inconsistent play of Shawntae Spencer. Couple that with lots of injuries at the position, you can never really have enough defensive backs. If Brown can keep his nose clean he can be a great value for the 49ers.
Brown was arrested in 2006 for marijuana charges and unlawful possession of a handgun. He has also battled a foot injury in 2006, and a broken arm the previous year. As a three year starter Brown is an experienced cornerback with good speed, strength, and really understands the game well. He continues to add muscle to his frame, and has good field awareness. Brown reacts well, and recovers quite well too. He has excellent body control and has good ball awareness. There is some concern about lower body strength and Browns ability in run support and up near the line of scrimmage, and needs to improve the angles he takes when in the open field.
The 49ers have solidified their cornerback position this offseason with the signing of Nate Clements. Pro Bowler Walt Harris mans the other corner. Brown will be able to compete with Shawntae Spencer for the third spot, and should see action even if he canŐt beat out Spencer this season. The key for Brown will be to buy into the Nolan system and really focus on maturing and recognizing the importance of character to being a football player.
