The 49ers tight end position is among the most stable year to year. Eric Johnson, Aaron Walker and long snapper Brian Jennings are all returning. The 49ers have added Doug Ziegler and rookie Billy Bajema to the mix as well.

Veteran Eric Johnson has really emerged as a top player for the 49ers. Johnson lead the team with over 80 receptions last season, and has improved his pass blocking over the years too. Johnson is healthy heading into camp, and if he remains that way he will continue on as the teams leading tight end.

Aaron Walker showed that he could handle some of the load last season and appears to be a solid option for the team. Walker will compete with Johnson but is not likely to win the position. He should have little trouble holding onto the number two spot also, and will see plenty of action in two tight end sets.

Doug Ziegler and Billy Bajema are two projects the tight end position. Bajema in my opinion has a greater chance of making the roster, given that he was drafted by the team. Bajema has the size to be a real asset in pass blocking, but will have to really step up his game in the NFL to compete at the higher level.

The 49ers are in good shape with their tight end position. The team will rely on the group to relieve some of the pressure from whoever their young quarterback will be. Eric Johnson of course will look to continue his excellence with another great season.
