Get Coached - Succeed In Life
A DVD Series
Nov 18 2010

Mike Singletary is one of 5 coaches who participated in a motivational series of DVD’s title “Get Coached”. The 5 DVD box set is designed to allow you to bring the competitive advantages these coaches use on the field to your life. Not only are they motivational - they give you a unique perspective on what has allowed these men to succeed in their careers. Singletary, Mike Ditka, Sean Payton, Rex Ryan and Bobby Bowden deliver an impactful message with 110 overall themes that flow well together. A sample of Mike Singletary’s DVD can be watched at: Video Link

Overall, I really liked the flow of the DVD set. When watched in sequence the following main topics really hit home on how a successful franchise is built. Given what the 49ers are going through right now - maybe the team should be watching the entire set and not just learning from Singletary. Ditka’s main themes include: owning your actions, making the effort, and yours for the taking. Payton encourages you to: focus on today, react and respond, and learn from the best - something I believe strongly in myself. Ryan talks about: no excuses, planning your success, and not bowing down.

The ideas of each coach build to Singletary and Bowden’s DVD’s - both of which stress the importance of faith and God. Singeltary specifically focuses on: exceeding expectation, inner greatness, and reading the eyes. Bowden adds the idea of taking charge and adapting change to the mix. Of all the topics I believe adapting to change is one of the ultimate lessons on the football field or in any competitive situation. Really though, the way the general themes build on one another make this set unique when compared to other motivation and athletic books / tapes on the market.

Singletary has had a rough go of it this season with the 49ers - but his success as a linebacker coach and player is unquestioned. Another thing that is unquestioned is that when he speaks, people listen. At times this season I have questioned whether his words lose impact when there is no follow up action. Even having questioned that, I found myself glued to his every word. I know that I would not want to be on the wrong end of a Singletary tongue lashing.

Singletary intertwines his leadership message with anecdotes from his life. One thing that really struck home for me was that the inability to quit or give up is something that was instilled in him by his mom. As a single mother she gave everything she had to earn a living and raise a family. I personally have seen the value a generation of hard work can instill in its youth - unfortunately I have seen the other side of the equation too. When taken in stride with Singletary’s experience it’s no wonder he fought so hard to bring Patrick Willis to the team.

The DVD set was great, but left me wanting more. I would have loved a bit more football strategy - but I recognize that the target audience of these DVD’s is meant to go beyond the football field. Parts of the DVD’s may be a little too faith based for some, but the overall messages I believe are strong enough to look beyond this aspect if that is not your thing.

Of all the coaches I really liked Sean Payton’s take. I think he did a great job of articulating what Leadership is to him, and how success does not come by accident. All the coaches though are inspiring and impressive - and that includes Singletary - who also talks about being authentic, a message he has hit home on throughout the season. Whether you are interested in becoming more successful yourself, or learning about what made one or all of these NFL greats star worthy I encourage you to check out the DVD set (also available in individual DVD’s).
