The pick was seen as a surprise to some, as the 49ers already had star tight end George Kittle on the roster. However, the team was in need of a reliable backup at the position, and Latu was considered one of the best remaining tight ends available.

Latu played in 13 games for Alabama in 2022, catching 24 passes for 310 yards and 3 touchdowns. He is known for his size and athleticism, standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 250 pounds. His physical tools and potential make him an intriguing prospect, but he is still considered a work in progress.

The 49ers have struggled to find a consistent backup to Kittle in recent years, with players like Ross Dwelley and Charlie Woerner failing to establish themselves in the role. With Latu, the team hopes to finally have a reliable option behind Kittle, who has been one of the best tight ends in the league since he was drafted in 2017.
