General Manager, Terry Donahue and company were hard at work the past few days. The 49ers executives worked feverishly trying to get all of the 49ers draft picks ready to go for training camp. They were very close, leaving only Mike Rumph’s and Josh Shaw’s contracts in question.

Shaw is currently rehabilitating a knee injury. His signing is thus somewhat less important, because he could not practice immediately with the team. Mike Rumph’s contract however, is something both sides would like to have hammered out, sooner rather than later.

It was believed that Saleem Rasheed would miss some training camp time too, but the 49ers were indeed able to hammer out a contract with him in order to bring him into camp. The third round pick signed a deal with a $538 000 bonus, with base salaries of $225 000, $300 000, $380 000. The $1.443 million contract has a cap value of $404 333.

Contract numbers for the other draft picks broke down as follows (courtesy of ESPN):
4a. PK Jeff Chandler (Florida/No. 102) -- Signing bonus: $330,000. Base salaries: $225,000 (2002); $300,000 (2003); and $380,000 (2004). Total: three years, $1,235,000. Cap value: $335,000.

4b. S Kevin Curtis (Texas Tech/No. 127) -- Signing bonus: $268,000. Base salaries: $225,000 (2002); $300,000 (2003); and $380,000 (2004). Total: three years, $1,173,000. Cap value: $314,333.

5a. QB Brandon Doman (BYU/No. 163) -- Signing bonus: $105,500. Base salaries: $225,000 (2002); $300,000 (2003); and $380,000 (2004). Total: three years, $1,010,500. Cap value: $260,167.

5b. DT Josh Shaw (Michigan State/No. 172): Unsigned.

6. TE Mark Anelli (Wisconsin/No. 201) -- Signing bonus: $56,000. Base salaries: $225,000 (2002); $300,000 (2003); and $380,000 (2004). Total: three years, $961,000. Cap value: $243,667.

7a. OG Eric Heitmann (Stanford/No. 239) -- Signing bonus: $28,500. Base salaries: $225,000 (2002); $300,000 (2003); and $380,000 (2004). Total: three years, $933,500. Cap value: $234,500.

7b. OT Kyle Kosier (Arizona State/No. 248) -- Signing bonus: $24,000. Base salaries: $225,000 (2002); $300,000 (2003); and $380,000 (2004). Total: three years, $929,000. Cap value: $233,000.

7c. CB Teddy Gaines (Tennessee/No. 256) -- Signing bonus: $20,000. Base salaries: $225,000 (2002); $300,000 (2003); and $380,000 (2004). Total: three years, $925,000. Cap value: $231,667.

The 49ers will continue to work closely with Rumph, who is losing valuable learning time, with every passing day. Unfortunately until some more of his first round draft ‘mates’ are signed, it will be tough for both sides to really come to terms on a fair deal.
